Walter “flabbergasted” at UWP China position

Walter said the UWP must come clean on China
Walter said the UWP must come clean on China

Minister of Agriculture and MP for Paix Bouche, Matthew Walter, says he is flabbergasted that the United Workers Party (UWP) intends to maintain diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.

“Lennox Linton must not forget the number of times the UWP made disparaging comments in an attempt to relegate and denigrate the People’s Republic of China and their assistance given to the people of Dominica,” he said.

Earlier this week Linton told a press conference that the UWP has no intention of reverting diplomatic relations to Taiwan and will continue ties with China.

“Contrary to what has been suggested to end diplomatic relations with China, we will continue those relations,” he said. “And it is our pledge, it is our committment that under the UWP Team Dominica government, the people of Dominica will see greater benefits from the relationship between the People’s Republic of China and the Commonwealth of Dominica.”

But Walter described Linton’s words as “lip service.”

“Dominicans don’t forget when the UWP was on a campaign vehememtly asking the Chinese here to go home,” he remarked. “This is enough of lip service which has no profound and genuine elements of mutual and friendly diplomatic relationship.”

He stated the entire matter is a way of tricking Dominicans into voting the UWP.

“The UWP cannot like the Chinese biscuit and use it as a bait to camoflage themselves to trick Dominicans to vote for them while in earnest they hate the Chinese civilazation,” Walter said. “They must come clean, a leopard cannot change its spot.”

He said the Dominica Labour Party cherishes Dominica’s relationship with China.

“We believe in the principles that forge this relationship between Dominica and China,” Walter said.

Dominica established relationship with China in 2004, severing a 21-year diplomatic stint with Taiwan.

A man not until recently did not even know Monkey Hill or Sams Gutter in Marigot. In his mind he must be saying and thinking of ways to fool the people. ( IF THEY SEE ME DOING THESE THINGS THEY WILL VOTE FOR ME ) They will think i am one of them. ( BACK OFF YOUR SHIRT NEXT TIME LENOX )

Being the (Senior Citizen) in this Labour Party government I expected Matthew Walter to take the lead an keep the younger unruly folks in check but I’m so disappointed that he has accepted every bit of humiliation meted out to him by his political master; he should be ashamed to make a dumb statement like that. Let me educate you mr. minister the USA has diplomatic relations with both China and Taiwan; put that in your pike an smoke it.

I have read this over and over again. I have concluded, that probably, Matthew was not the person who wrote this. While walking in Roseau, I heard a man from a distant say that this statement may very well be propaganda from the government communications consultant at GIS.

What you are saying is very possible. Some of China’s gestures towards Dominica have been questionable. How is anybody to believe China would do anything positive and good for any other nation without an ulterior motive with their record of human rights violations  and the way they have treated their own people?

My own thoughts are: Be polite to Chinese people and treat them kindly. Many of them are lovely folks. But don’t trust the government of China. I hope the governments of Dominica and Canada (my own nation) never do.

This is just common sense  in light of what we know of their history and their attitude towards the free world.

China needs what every nation needs and that is the gospel of Christ. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, International Evangelist.

what did Mr Walter eat of late? Suddenly he is on a role, because he is on his way out! Nothing can be said about such failed Politicians who did absolutely nothing for their constituents. Mr walter has been asleep for years now, suddenly the Young woman from Paix bouche who is a well qualified atorney at law got him up late using big words for folks who doesnot understand him… The Best thing for Mr Walter is to just enjoy all the goodies and nice life under the labour party regime. For doing nothing for the poor folks of his constituency he should be flabbergasted that they voted him for so so so many years…….
Mr walter time to go back into your shell, whenever you all talk is some kind of nonsense and commess. Mr walter real gutsy to be backing labour party when they never took him seriously – just look at his ministry… agriculture…. worst ministry in Dominica , no wonder he cried when his Boss took community Dev from himm………..

Your question is a valid one. The reality is that relations between Taiwan and main land China are cordial and there is open trade between the two so there is no hindrance in us dealing with them in the same manner. To recognise Taiwan to the exclusion of the People’s Republic of China is an idea that has been overtaken by time. We should face realism and act accordingly.

I’m a laborite but the only respect I have for Matthew Walter is just because he is a human being.. He messed up the Agricultural Department. He lacks leadership and foresight. When he leaves office there is nothing he can point his finger on in his constituency that he engineered. He is not able to see further than his toes. Skerrit should have fired him a long time ago. He is a total embarassment. This is the mistake Skerrit made.

This faux debate about relations between Taiwan and China is a moot point. Since president Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan took up office in 2008, relations across the strait has been improving.

When he became Ma announced that he would accept the idea of “one China with different interpretations”. This led to better relations and a series of agreements between the two countries, including the suspension of competition for diplomatic allies. Both sides agreed that they would neither pursue or accept requests for diplomatic relations with countries that already had relations with the other.

This is why St. Lucia, under the current Labour Party cannot return to China. It was the St. Lucia Labour Party that ended ties with Taiwan and went to China when it first was in office. After it lost, the United Workers Party of John Compton/Stephenson King, left China and returned to Taiwan. By the time the SLP won again, China and Taiwan had already agreed not to poach each other’s diplomatic allies.

This, therefore, puts to rest any so-called debate about the UWP in Dominica going to Taiwan. Let’s find something meaningful to debate

Matthew Walter will be flabbergasted at almost anything, after all this man is not noted for intellect. It suggests to me that most of these new labour people suffer from a malaise of irrelevance, stuck in the middle ages of small time village politics.
They appear to lack the basic ability to comprehend a 21st century geo-political environment, in which enlightened and informed diplomacy is the order of the day, hence Matthew Walter been flabbergasted at UWP’s policy on China.
But this should not surprise anyone given these “FELLAS” belief that this is the only government in the history of Dominica that has ever had relations with any country except its immediate neibours. That diplomacy to this government is the indiscriminate selling of diplomatic missions to unsavory characters, without considering the risks to which they expose each and every Dominican to, and thus makes Dominica a clear and present danger to the security of the global community.

“Lennox Linton must not forget the number of times the UWP made disparaging comments in an attempt to relegate and denigrate the People’s Republic of China and their assistance given to the people of Dominica,” he said.”(Walter).

Walter you are flapping your gum talking about sweet sounding nothing! Why should you or any member of the Labor Party be overwhelmed with shock, or have become dumbfound that the UWP intends to continue a relationship with China?

That is what newly elected government does; if there is an agreement between governments, or any signed contracts, or programs already in place as part of what the loosing party done; the newly elected government is obligated to honor the contract or any such diplomatic agreement.

Look at it this way, you should be more dumbfounded when you people came to power by way of forming a coalition government; the first stupid mistake you people made was to immediately shut down the International Airport which the UWP had secured financing for.

Remember the contractors from Trinidad, were already in Dominica, working on the project, the International Airport was in its first stages of development, that is the time you should have been bewildered at the stupid argument you all made to justify the closer; the shutting down of construction of the International Airport.

Everything the UWP accomplished within the short four years they served, as soon as you people siege power, you set out to destroy what was already accomplished, including the Secondary School in Wesley, in which we discovered not long ago that children attended classes stilting and standing in pools of water, in a building with all the windows broken.

The Labor Party government was reluctant to repair the school for no other reason, than it was the UWP government who built it. Taiwan has been a friend of Dominica, since independence, however on the advised of China, the same, one and only Labor Party in power severed diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, only to declare total loyalty to the dictators of China.

You should appreciate, and give some respect, and credit to Linton for the principles and intentions of the UWP if they win, at least they will not make the rest of us look stupid, and dumb, since they are not prepared to go and demolish the State Building, and the Stadium which we have to pay for; built by the Chines.

If the operatives of the Labor Party were not so stupid and vindictive, Dominica would long ago have an International Airport, that is what you should be flabbergasted about! Where have you been all of these years, all of a sudden you are out spoken, babbling as a puppet on a string singing for you supper as if your life depends on it!

    April 3, 2014

what workers say that flabbergasting you? How comes all those years you were getting a salary and not doing no work never flabbergast you? Mr Man, go back and sleep eh.

P.S – Diplomacy has no business in Dominicans and their immature politics, if Workers get in power now; is not china’s concern if labour stay is still not china’s concern – China’s (and that of every other Diplomatic nation/relationship)is to facilitate the best benefits to their country/sovereign – not what politicians say about them. So no matter how much the DLP try to make it seem that Workers criticising the Chinese will cause them to close doors on Dominica (should UWP win) that will never be the case.

Diplomacy is not the emotional nature that Dominica governments has been presenting – its logic above emotions!

After 25 years of non-performance in several Ministries, Mr. Walter is finally making his voice hear. Sir, if you knew anything about diplomacy you would know that the UWP Government will continue the Chinese/Dominican relationship. The Chinese are the world economic power. There are more millionaires in China than anywhere else in the world. Even the Mighty USA is expanding their links with China.
What Linton has always expressed concern about is the shady and covert operations of this government with some Chinese funded projects. For instance, anyone who is knowledgeable about construction knows that the State house project was over costed. But it is left for me and you to guess where the extra money went to. Under a UWP government we expect more open, transparent and mutually beneficial relationships with the Chinese.

Dominica News Online – Saturday, December 7th, 2013 at 8:47 AM

“The Chinese Embassy in the Commonwealth of Dominica would like to clarify that the widely-reported US$300 million MOU, including the construction of a hotel, a hospital and an airport by using concessionary loans from the Chinese Government, was not signed by the Chinese Government,” the embassy told DNO via email.

The man was a total political failure and disaster for 25 long years, and now Skerrit has made it clear that he does not want him or his son in his temple, so Matthew trying. hahaha, the both parties can say what they want. China is part of the BRICS. They BOTH know that China is better to work with than anyone else who is not part of the BRICS. Who ever will be making deals with China just have to do it in a way that benefits us for a long term, not just short term (ensure goods and materials are of quality when building and teach the trade to locals who can pass it on) and make deals that the future generations don’t have to suffer for .

Then again, we can preach all day all night, the big boys will still try to get their cut from it no matter what deal they get. I think the priority is to get a good deal then get a cut, not get a cut then make a crappy deal. Who will do that? that’s all I wanna know.

To the parties in this competition, you two can bluff and pretend and cloak your intentions but life is like poker… eventually… you must…. show… your hand! The people will know, hopefully it is not too late.

To workers… stand by your word.

To labour… i would not even comment on this because you guys are shedding more light on worker’s intentions. 55. That Same Matthew?
    April 3, 2014

Matthew stop that nonsense because we all know it’s nothing but politics. The Chinese are world class diplomats and they know what to expect during a close election campaign. Furthermore, Dominicans will remember when the Freedom party established relations with Taiwan in 1983, UWP creticised them only to find out that when UWP became the government in 1995-2000, our relationship with China was even closer than in the days of DFP. I don’t care a thing about what the UWP says because you as a minister have made it clear to friends that you are not in support of the secrecy used by Skerrit in the China/Dominica MOU and that was another reason why you and Skerrit could not see each other. So stop your nonsense.

Its not all about politics and if it was the UWP has lost again and again.

Honestly Mathew, the Chinese laughing their heads off ! P.M. did not tell you that Lennox Linton had meeting with the Chinese ambassador in Dominica because they want to know who they ware dealing with in the new govt. and P.M. very upset about that. P.M. does not tell you anything , does he Mathew and now you wake up to find your bacon already in the fire. P.M. really fed up with you and if only he had a suitable candidate to replace you….??? I hope you made arrangements for your pension. Believe me brother. team Dominica have no problem with China and China not with them.

Dream on. We will not see Team Dominica having any Diplomatic Ties with China. Simple reason; they will not form the government. But it is really good to see them gasping on any line they can find to survive. The writing is definitely on the wall and in indelible blue ink.

5 more years at least, in Opposition. They will remain exactly where they are except with less seats that they now have for at least the next five years.

      Dominicans will see to that.

It’s really disgusting hearing these politicians disparaging each other as if they have the answers to all that ails Dominica. Dominica is a sovereign state and as such the leaders who are there are entrusted to make decisions in the best interests of Dominican and its people. Is there something wrong with changing course? No matter whether its Labour, UWP, Freedom or whatever party, if relationships with one government is yielding beneficial results for our nation why should we not want to capitalize on it regardless of which party initiated the relationship. Stop being divisive and be gracious. Why should you want us to pay the price at reinventing the wheel when much progress has been made. If a new government comes into power it should not be reap everything off and start over. Our mindset should be to build on what’s working. I truly believe we should have term limits for government because like the sage saying goes “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
