DNO Poll Result: Do away with the Office of the President

The majority of readers who participated in a Dominica News Online poll think that Dominica should do away with the Office of the President.

The poll asked “Should Dominica do away with the Office of the President?”

Of the total of 1,184 readers who participated, 686 readers, that is 58 percent, voted in favour of doing away with the office while 436 or 37 percent, voted no.

62 readers or five percent of the total votes cast said they are not sure.

DNO’s poll is not a scientific one.

The matter of the Office of the President has once again become the subject of much debate in Dominica when it was announced recently that the island’s current president, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, would be leaving office early because of ill health.

The government and the opposition have held consultations on a new president and a special sitting of parliament was convened to inform members of the vacancy.

The opposition subsequently demanded that the government make available a letter of intent  from the president showing that he is actually vacating office.

The deadline for the submission of nominations for president from both the opposition and the government is September 7.

If we going to continue to ignore the constitution like Mr Skeritt and his team have been doing, then we deffinitely need to DO AWAY with the office of the president. However, if we going to restore our constitution and follow it as other leaders like: PJ, OJ, Mamo, Eddo,Rosie, and Piero did, then we need the office of the president to stay in tack. Mr. Liverpool however, has so badly failed us as a nation that now we even need to wonder if the president’s office is important. What a shame Skerro and the POOL!

What is the purpose of having a prime minister and a president? What was the intent or purpose in the Constitution?

Dominica needs a President inorder to shepard parliamentarians like Skerrit. What must happen is that politicans like Skerrit must learn to respect whichever person holding the presidency.

We need to do away with office of the Prime minister in stead but not the office of president. Like in many other countries, the president is head of state and holds the executive position.

Then again, you need a constitutional amendment….you can’t just do away with things and do things on the fly…. Think people think.

That is what the poll should be asking…do we need a constitutional amendment

If you were to do away with the office of the President, what are you going to replace it with? Did not that part.

DNO,you need not to become the lowest common denominator as the QFM and UWP.

If you are putting up a poll to do away with the Presidency, what are our alternatives?

To do such, we would have to amend the constitution. SO why put up something like this and not advice your readers.

As journalist, please use the 5 “W”..why, how, when etc to guide your less informative readers.

Please educated them, because I see quite a few mis-informed people here , just posting stuff because they can.

The position of the President can be replaced, but we need a constitutional amendment.

    1. Do we then make the Prime Minister Head of State or

2.do we move from a Republic and back to the Queen being head of State?

    3. or Do we get rid of the office of Prime Minister and we vote for a President and then have different branches of government like the US?

These are valid points to be discussed..so these poll carrys no weight…it does nothing for us…just fudder and talking points.

    INCOMPLETE POLL

This has to be the most ridiculous I’ve ever read on this site.

A poll is a survey of public opinion from a particular sample. That’s all. A poll doesn’t go into the nitty gritty of a particular subject.

Look at the presidential polls going on the US right now. Are they giving alternatives?

        Dear Dorival John,
It is PRECISELY because we think that the USA is a GOOD model that we continue to do all these absurdities here; the constitution of the USA is roman based while that of Da is Anglo-saxon based. Moreover, the comments posed by El Presidente are in order. Probably if readers were aware of some of the alternatives, they might have casted their votes differently. And by the way, the USA is NOT my model of a good country.

If the office of the president serves a particular function then what is it? If the office is done away with because it has no use then why should there be any alternatives? It’s not always necessary to replace things that have been taken way because of lack of function.

Boss you doh tired talk none sense? You always have a long speech going on and on about absolutely nothing, both on the internet and in person (wink wink).

Your first line alone about “common denominator Q95 and UWP” killed any attempt my you to later make an objective or logical point. ZEH ZEH

Right then and there you indirectly stated where your allegiance is, how then would you like a poll result which goes against what your boys and them want?

And like Dorival is telling you, it’s just a basic opinion poll. You going on and on about advising readers.

One thing I was happy to see you identify is the fact that many “mis-informed people here , just posting stuff because they can.” Good observation there my boy. Those comrades of yours really need to be informed!

Dominica needs a President! The current debate has to do with our intolerance with an office that does very little and the aggravation of this situation by the sitting President who does not epitomise the industry and views of the majority of citizens. The constitution places some leadership and astute responsibilities on the office but the holder must be willing to rise to the occasion and steer the State in the direction of law, public policy and democratic wishes. So while I will support the continuation of the office of President, I too clamour for change in hid role; change befitting a young developing nation in the 21st century.

    • September 5, 2012

I agree and the reason why the result of the Poll is so high it’s because we have a President who refuses to do his job for whatever reason but he enjoys the perks that comes with the job well that is not enough right now it looks as if three persons are causing the riff on the Island when it ocmes to this topic and as far as I see they are Skerrit, Speaker of the house, and Liverpool , passing on hear say message to the House speaker and she passes it on to the house knowing fully well that’s not the proper procedure for goodness sake we have a CONSTITUTION and it’s to be repected by everyone no one is above the LAW of the Land and that include these three individuals.
And if the gentleman that Skerrit want takes up the job knowing that the procedures were not followed he is just as dangerous and the man who gave him the job.

Correction: there is no vacancy in the office of President. The PM indicated in the parliament that the President ‘indicated’ to him about ill health but he doesn’t have a letter confirming that the president has vacated the office. The office is not vacant. U are misleading the citizens of Dominica.

Next time get your facts straight. If there was a vacancy then the Speaker of the house would have in her possession a letter from Mr Liverpool for the resignation that will cause a vacancy in that office.
