DNO POLL RESULT: Politicians should debate issues

debate pollAn online poll by DNO has revealed that a majority of readers who participated believe politicians should debate matters of national importance.

Recently leader of the United Workers Party, Lennox Linton, challenged prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, to a series of debates to discuss economic matters, foreign policy, good governance and the rule of law.

“We are issuing the challenge,” the UWP leader stated. “It is necessary for us to debate. We cannot be the last country in the world where no debate takes place, no debates take place among politicians from either side of the parliament. It is totally disgraceful. It is unacceptable.”

The government has remained largely silent on the latest challenge.

In light of this, DNO sought to get the views of readers with a poll.

The poll asked, “Should politicians participate in debates concerning matters of national importance?”

A total of 1,639 readers cast their votes in the poll.

1,404 readers, that is 86 percent, voted ‘yes.’

138 readers or eight percent voted, ‘It won’t make a difference.’

97 readers or 6 percent voted ‘no.’

DNO’s poll is NOT a scientific poll.

Should politicians debate maters of national intrest? the answer has to be yes. But DNO is letting Linton trick them into promoting his own agenda just like he is doing at Q95. We already have a constitutional venue for such debates by and among people elected to represent us. There are legal process for example in the house of commons, the house of representative, the parliament and in our case the house of assembly.
We already have an elected leader of the opposition and two elected members and nominated
members from the UWP party who knows that. Linton tatics and tricks remind me of Hitler who gave us world war 2. He may be called Trickster.

UWP group are expert in talking noise like all tabloid journalist. They have a lot of show but no go. They should be in show business. They are touring like troubadors. They ask for transparency, but they fail to mention who is sponsoring these overseas tours. One can onlt speculate that their money may is coming from drug dealers and arm sellers

Should we ban or boycott the Legislative bodies made up of elective members of the house of assembly. In every country I know matters of government are debated at legislative bodies which is the constitutional process.

Hope they are prepared to answer questions about DAAS.

Good governance and transparency will be uwp downfall.

This is the platform they are running on.

Suprisingly, there are a lot of skeletons in their closet.

Mr. Linton, Fontaine should no longer be considered as the prospective Minister of Finance, in light of the current disclosures about his activities in DAAS.

For those UWP spoke persons Good governace mean if Linton say so is so. Transparency means look at other people but its not for them. They have never contested an election much less get elected but they already have a minister of finance. They have made the elected members of the UWP party moo moo.Is this a technical coup

We don’t need any debate because Lennox Linton is a journalist not a politician. There is no real politician in that party, so who is the PM going to debate with?

    • Emile Zapatos
      February 14, 2014

Linton calculates that the PM will not agree to a debate with him since debating him would put him an the same level of political importance as the PM. He figure out that challenging the PM would cause embarrassment to the PM and put the PM in the sight of uwp supporters with more verbal ammunition. But labour party should not worry. WE have many carving knives to cut the tail of the 3 blind mice and their pipe pipers.

In Denmark, we got debates 24/7 by all parties
Whats the big deal?, why Skerrit wont debate?
He should debate and defend his policies, if he truely believe they are the best for Dominica and Dominicans

I would not endorse it. If you have been following Dominica’s politics and what has been transpiring and stated, this is a different type of debate. Dominica is a small country and Denmark is much bigger. Therefore, you cannot compare one to another. This is a different type of politics and debate.

    • Emile Zapatos
      February 14, 2014

In Denmark those debates are between or among elected officials of an elected body not by journalist types trying to get publicity and attention

The hatred expressed against the PM here and on other media outlets by UWP suporters and leaders is exactly why the Labour Party will win again. I as an independent can’t even read some of these comments. The disrespect clearly throws me of. You call for change but change to what? My uncle has already said that he isn’t voting (UWP suporter), My brother now 18 and sister are now leaning towards Labour and by granny said that she finish with that. These people never voted labour have been UWP suporters. All because of the hatred and disrespect. Now you want debate when you cannot even control yourself? When you cannot respect another’s opinion? I’m looking for good change and not a change of people as I am seeing now. This is politics so please stop that hatred, not needed at all. By the way my wife has now registered to vote for the first time and she is still looking but has been tilt towards Labour. UWP still have time to recover. You cannot win with your hard core suporters, you need people like us.

It depends how you ask. If respectfully, you should receive a respectful response. If otherwise, be prepared for that too. This would apply to anyone. Some people lack diplomacy. When they talk and ask questions in an indifferent manner, they could turn others off. It is for this reason why there should not be any debate between the current government and the leader of the opposition. The latter has depicted that he harbors no love for the PM and this is hatred. Even at a distance we are no fools and are not deceived. It is too obvious.

DNO,with all due respect to you;but sorry to say your UWP poll is a damn joke and laughable. The result of your poll does not represent the majority of Dominicans.Stop portraying the UWP supporters who voted on your poll as the Dominican majority.

  12. Simply the Truth
    February 12, 2014

I am being honest; not taking sides except what I have been reading on DNO specifically in the past months including noticing those biased thumbs down even though what is stated is the truth. It all depends whose side they are on.
More often than not it is visible that the majority are on the side of UWP, giving the impression that they are in the majority. This does not mean that the majority of comments, especially those who are on the side of DLP, made it on this Website. Those readers who are affected are not deceived. Some make no comment to DNO.
I would vote for a leaders’ debate. However, in view of what has been taking place in D/ca and the attitude of the UWP’s Leader, this debate would produce no fruitful results. It would be a war of words and vicious name-calling on his side and not worth it.
I visualize the scene would not be a nice one to hear and read about. It would be one which will generate discord and hatred. It would be a waste of God-given precious allotted time. In this case, it is better not to have one.
I do not think the PM should stoop low to pacify Lennox Linton’s demanding challenge including his party members, knowing what they are up to in addition to their supporters.
Please spare D/cans this melee and disagreeable debate. Let there be peace on earth, in Dominica and campaign in dignity.

  13. February 12, 2014

@Aye February 12, 2014–“86% of Dominicans are smart”

No! That is 86% of 1639 (1404) of those who voted–not 86% of Dominicans–isn’t that figure around 70,000, in population? Correct me if I am wrong.

And age did not matter here–any child who has an understanding mind could participate in that vote of DNO. So it is clear that many young people who are “under age” to vote in election took part in that pole.

You people should start thinking for yourselves and stop copying or repeating the thoughts production of someone else, or other people, without any conviction of the perfect truth–that is bad for Dominica.

The poor, weak, and slow “intellectual” process and production of you people has more to do with the reason for Dominica’s slowness in development, than any rule of “government”–they are just a few men and women.

But you all continue to be like a “loud clanging cymbal” not taking heed of what is really happening. O my Dominica, may God continue to look upon you!

By the way God is not the name of the Most High–it is a placement to protect His Holy name–seem like you do not know Him well enough to even know that eh? So don’t worry about me, look about yourself.

    • Ben Dover
      February 12, 2014

You must be a complete idiot. Do you know how polls work?

Let me enlighten your small brains how polls work. Whenever polls are done, a ‘sample’ is normally used and not the entire population.

For example when Gallup does polls in the US, they normally use a sample of 1,000 people spread across the US, with a margin of error of ±4 percentage points.

From that sample, Gallup can pretty much get an idea of how people across the US think since they chosen from different demography. It would pretty much impossible to poll the hundreds of millions of Americans to know how people across the US think.

I think you should stick to your bible blabbering and stop trying to grow a brain on other matters. I doubt you understand what I am trying to day.

      • February 12, 2014

        @Ben Dover February 12, 2014

I thought you said you always used your real name when you are posting here? I have caught you before today, you know! And you know who you are as much I know it–along with DNO–unless you did not use your computer to write this comment.

And with that sad keep your explanation to yourself–I do not need it. You have your right to your opinion and so do I.

And I am saying it again “1404” in favor is not the opinion of the people of Dominica—Good evening!

      • Ben Dover
        February 12, 2014

IDIOT….let me make it simple for you, since it seems is pou pou you have for your brains.

You don’t need to drink a whole bowl of soup to know what the soup taste like. You can use a small spoon and pretty much know how the whole bowl tastes.

Its a sample. Polls work the same way. You don’t need to poll an entire population to know what that specific thinks.

        Understand? Probably not.

        February 12, 2014

        @BEND OVER
sweety there is a methodological way this randomly 1000 persons are selected BY Gallup hence this does not apply here.Even though polls are done in a particular way that still does not mean that that 1000 persons selected from their random interview will give an accurate picture.Read up some more on the internet where you will find many poll results which were wayyyyyy off. So you actually believe in your mind that because certain polls have been almost accurate after having selected a 1000 persons, then ALLLLLLLLLL other polls conducted with 1000 persons MUST BE ACCURATE? lolzzzzzzzzzzzzz u make me laugh

      • Simply the Truth
        February 12, 2014

We are aware about polls and how they are conducted. No exception in Canada and Europe. However, it does not reflect the entire population and not even half; only a small percentage of those who participated. Just as it is stated, it is not scientific, polls are never accurate.
There are some who wait to hear the results of the poll to vote since they cannot make up their mind which Party they will vote for. These are people who are neither here nor there.
Frankly, I do not go by Polls to determine which Party I will vote for or should they participate in a debate. Nevertheless, if they are accurate, it is interesting to know the opinion of some people.
There is no need for any Party Leader and members to panic and have anxiety over the results. Election Day will hopefully project the truth.

        Bend Over,

Do you know i voted twice on that poll? Once when i was at work and the other time when i was home!!! My vote counted both times, I think there are many persons like me!!!!

The 1,000 people Gallup interviews are hand picked and they only give their opinions once, and like you said they interview persons all over the US (key word here – the US), this poll is open for persons all over the globe where Dominicans or friends of Dominica who uses DNO as their source of information to vote.

So please get off your high horse of insults, stop the name calling, calm down and allow for good discussion.. The poll represents what READERS of DNO thinks of a Debate this might just be 800 people spread across the globe and may only have 200 or less actually residing in Dca voting in all categories!!!

DNO cannot say all those who voted ‘No” are those who actually live on island whilst everyone who voted ‘Yes’ lives out of the island.

You get my drift Mr. Pollster!!!!

    • Not Me Alone
      February 12, 2014

@Lizavier4Jesus, Is it that you were too busy to run your mouth that you had no time to read so you could understand what you reading? Take a good look at the first paragraph: ” Online poll by DNO has revealed that a majority of readers who participated…” Did you see he was referring to MAJORITY OF READERS, and not majority of Dominicans? So what’s your point? In other words, it was only for readers of DNO and like in any election readers had a choice to vote or not to vote and they also had a choice in favor or against. Do you understand? Also if there is a village council election that is opened to all villagers and only 10% of villagers choose to cast their ballot, are you going to ignore the result because of the percentage that voted? That’s exactly what happened there. Copwan de voux?

      • February 12, 2014

        @Not Me Alone February 12, 2014

You stupid individual! I do not care about what DNO wrote–I understand their message clearly. Read back where they told you “DNO’s poll is NOT a scientific poll”. Huuuuuuuuuuuh!

You do not know that you simply confirmed what I am showing to all you fools, when you tell me that DNO is talking about the “majority of readers”, not the “majority of Dominicans”–who are the majority of “readers” compared to the majority of “Dominicans”?

A few empty headed young bloggers, on DNO, cannot call to the Prime Minister for decision making in Dominica, whatsoever that decision may be–they are not the opinion of “the people” as you fools are claiming it to be. The men and women of Government are not a small boys and girls, playing in your backyards! Decision making for our country is not a joke.

And so I am talking to you empty heads in Dominica, or wherever you all are, who have no intellects of your own–as I read through those stupid comments here–“like 86% of Dominicans are smart” from another idiot below”; did the message of DNO say that? You have already answered that question; and so that is what I cannot tolerate.

Do we have only 1639 people in Dominica? How is that “opinion” to keep a debate by the leaders of Dominica–the opinion of the “majority of Dominicans”–as you all are claiming that the “people” wants a debate? Who are the “people” in 1404 votes? That figure is less than 2% of the population of Dominica, you fools–that figure is “not” the “people”.

You and that so-called “Ben Dover” dummy above–you do not know who you are contending against. And so it would do you two much better if you would simply SHUT UP!!!!!!!!! You two, and the rest of you, with your empty heads like a “dried shell” and your talks which is like the sound of “Loud Clanging Cymbals” Now take that!

I did so too, i still love my hand but for accountability sake and Dominica I contemplating a different vote this time especially if there is no debate.

You see a debate would be wonderful knowledge!!!!!

They can come with as many debates as they want. Mr. Skeritt will beat them every day of the week, plus twice on a Sunday, once it has to do with the economy and not corruption.

Is Skerrit is a hiding under a rock? That is not what leaders do-they show up and face the music. Bullies run away and hide and come out with their possie like they bad and strong. They cannot stand on their own.

Mr. Cecil, have you heard Skerritt speak latey? Skerro can only beat Linton or Thompson in Wmapwee!

It will be interesting to see whether Skeritt has the guts to debate the novice. Last year when the poll results showed the Labor Party was favored to win the next General Election by 67%, Skeritt was in his glory. Again, when the poll showed that Dominicans were against the Independence boycott, as far as Skeritt was concerned, the people’s wishes should be accepted. What goes around comes around, the people have once again talked. Is he going to hide in Vielle Case or Long Island or is he going to accept the people’s wishes. You can run as far as you want, but you cannot hide.

Doc love change you name to Doc Hate PM Skerrit wasn’t hiding anywhere that’s why he visited his DOMINICANS in the tri-states. Do you know the meaning of hiding the PM is present every day for his people.

@J B CHARLES. JB your hypocrite Skerrit is hiding like a little coward. A weakling, and alittle boy with a toy.Whenever he visits some countries he does so in a secretive way. Can you tell us why he likes hiding so? Have you ever gone with him on one of those hiding missions? Are you hiding as well JB? Finally HYPOCRITE JB, what are you all hiding so?

  27. The Authorities
    February 12, 2014

We the Authorities have advised PM Skerrit that his participation in any debate with the opposition party would be an exercise in futility and would be detrimental to is political career.

Although his non-participation will reduce his Job Approval Rating, our calculations have shown that it would be much worse if he were to engage in a debate with the UWP.

    • February 12, 2014

@The Authorities, why do you say if the PM were to engage in a debate with the UWP his “Job Approval Rating” would “reduce or much worse”?

      Can you be more explicit?

      • The Authorities
        February 13, 2014

In light of the sensitive nature of our calculations, it has been determined that the details are to remain classified.

  28. Rereree
    February 12, 2014

Through the DNO poll, voters have spoken.

Let’s wait and see whether the prime minister will demonstrate his respect for popular opinion and do the honorable thing.
But I am not holding my breath, although I would be pleasantly surprised if he does.
If I am fearful about the future of democracy in this country it is because I have come to the conclusion, rather reluctantly, that this prime minister does not have democracy in his DNA. He seems to me to be more in the mold of an African despot, like Mugabe of Zimbabwe. That would be okay if the general public is content with being led in this fashion. The poll results suggest otherwise.
So it obvious that the people are not getting what they legitimately deserve in terms of governance.
That’s why this upcoming elections will be critical to determine the kind of representation this country will have.
The writing is on the wall!

    • February 12, 2014

@Rereree, (Referee) the Prime Minister do NOT have to demonstrate anything; however, I think he should participate in the debate.

Hold your breath because you will need it. I hope you and others realize that the “POLL RESULT” is in FAVOR of a “DEBATE” and “NOT” of the “UWP”, because not ONLY UWP SUPPORTERS would like to hear the boys DEBATE.

I agree that “this upcoming elections will be critical to determine the kind of representation this country will have.”

I have not seen any “writing on the wall”. MAY THE BEST “MAN” WIN.

    February 12, 2014

Well i have no doubt that Skerrit will not debate, any of the issues. This time around however, he will not debate neither will he WIN the election. THE LOOK ON HIS FACE TELL THE GRIM STORY OF HIS FAILING AND AILING corrupt Labour party.
Linton is intellectually smarter than Skerrit, so PM versus PM Linton will knock him down. Linton will ask certain questions of him which he will answer “Go To Hell” “It’s Not Your Dam Business”. Skerrit is very limited in communiocation skills, and in a debate he won’t be able to make up with his rhetorical gutter politics gabs.
On ECONOMIC MATTERS honestly it is only TIM TIM that can take on the learned DOCTOR FONTAINE, an Fontaine will put Tim Tim to the canvas. Other than Tim Tim this corrupt party is a VERY DUNCE AND EMPTY PARTY.
On Foreign policy matters, Linton will squeeze Skerrit to submission. Our foreign policy is in a mess, and this will be shoved down Skerrits throat by Linton in a debate.
On the matter of good governance any kindergarten child can challenge Skerrit on the topic. Our governance is the worst that it has ever been in our history.
On the rule of law,any “Team Dominica” candidate can take on any of the members of the corrupt Labour party, and will win comfortably.
So i am confident that Skerrit will RUN AWAY FROM A DEBATE, BUT HE CANNOT RUN AWAY FRON AN ELECTION DEFEAT.
The writing is on the wall. LABOUR PARTY WILL SOON BE DUMPED INTO A PIT LATRINE. Dominicans will this year come out of the brutal clutches and shackles of Skerrit and his cabal. Dominicans will be put into jobs, the rule of law will once again flourish in Dominica, and “””Team Dominica””” will make us feel like proud citizens of our beloved country.
    HOW LONG?
    NOT LONG!
