Prison inmate Tyrone Esprit on Monday pleaded guilty in court to wounding and battery in connection with the beating of his fellow inmate, Glenroy George, on May 31, 2013.

Court information revealed that on that day, the police were called in and some prisoners were arrested after a number of inmates at the Stock Farm prison became involved in a fight which turned bloody.

According to court reports, Tyrone Esprit, Julian Maxwell, Jervier Gordon and Kenrick Tyson are alleged to have beaten inmate Glenroy George to the point where he had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Maxwell, Gordon and Tyson all pleaded not guilty.

A trial date of September 2, 2013 has been set.

According to the facts as read in court by prosecutor Inspector Claude Weekes, the police were  called by a prison officer after the fight broke out and were told that George had not been able to find his pants after showering and when he was not able to find it, he was told that ‘Kenrick had thrown it in the garbage bin.”

George then removed Tyson’s boxer shorts and threw it in the garbage bin.  Esprit then reacted by striking him several times on the head with a stick.

According to the reports, the other inmates joined in even after the lone prison officer on duty showed up and George was punched and cuffed several times and had to be taken to hospital for medical attention.

“This does not spell well for the prison authorities there could have been a death. Proper security is needed. I am very concerned at that situation,” Chief Magistrate Baptiste said.

Esprit expressed remorse for his actions and told the court that he was placed in the “Cove” ( a special punishment cell). He said George told him that “that matter is not finished yet” and he has reported that to the prison authorities and requested that he not be placed in any cell holdings with George.

Esprit is serving a prison sentence for handling. He was given a 6 months sentence for wounding and  a 3 months sentence for battery. Both sentences have been suspended for 18 months.

Just like a friend son was incarcerated, and was kibeaten by a prison officer.
Kicked among other things and they all denied it.
Some people must remember that one day they will have children of their own.
And their consequences will be worst to what my friend son suffered.
Her tears will not go in vain., wicked people.

All this happened and no member of the victim’s family was contacted. Can you believe it happened on May 31, the man was hospitalized, no one knows for how long or if he is still at the hospital, and yet no one in his family knew that until today we saw it on DNO. According to magistrate Baptist, “There could have been a death” and I guess family members would only get to know that after the man was probably buried or his body dumped in the sea. I guess this is the new Dominica of 2013.

I agree. I have heard of an alleged stabbing that occurred at the prison recently also, which sent an inmate to the hospital. I said that this cannot be true because it would have been reported but after reading this, there might be some truth to that incident. It makes one wonder what else is kept secret. All we can do is pray for our country.

Can anyone explain to me the suspended sentence in relation to the victim? Is that a punishment

    • Sense
      June 14, 2013

delaying of a defendant’s serving of a sentence after they have been found guilty, in order to allow the defendant to perform a period of probation. If the defendant does not break the law during that period, and fulfills the particular conditions of the probation, the judge usually throws out the sentence.
