A lecture on Faith and the Legal System will be hosted by the Catholic Church in Dominica at the Fort Young Hotel on Tuesday evening.

Monsignor William John-Lewis told DNO that the lecture forms part of the 2012-2013 Year of Faith celebrations by the church and will be delivered by Sir Brian Alleyne.

“It is part of our observance of the year of faith,” he explained. “The year of faith is part of the Universal Church since 11th October, 2012 to coincide with the anniversary of the Vatican Council II and also the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.”

He said that the Year of Faith runs from October 11th 2012 to November 24th 2013. “This year means it’s the year when the church is being invited to review our faith, what we believe and how we live our faith, how we celebrate our faith and how we pray,” he rearked.

Monsignor Jno Lewis added that the lecture is the first of a series of public lectures which the church will host throughout the year.

“This lecture is meant to assist us to reflect on how our faith impacts on our observance of the law and our interpretation of the law,” he stated. “People will be invited to discuss the topic after the lecture which is expected to help us reflect on our personal understanding of where we stand in terms of observance of our law.”

He pointed out that in a few parts of the Bible the law of the land stands in conflict with the law of God and stated that the lecture will highlight the ways in which Christians view the law of the land and how they must adhere to it.

Other lectures slated for the Year of Faith include those on Faith and Culture and Faith and the Medical System.

Monsignor John-Lewis said that these lectures are important at this time because they help Christians understand how their faith impacts various aspects of society.

The lecture is expected to begin at 7:00 pm at the Fort Young Hotel Conference room.

Monsignor Jno Lewis, could you highlight to us where in de bible we have the law of the land standing in conflict with the law of God. Some of us are not too affluent with bible studies but the point is well noted.

I think the church should stick to what it does best. Preach the word of the lord, help the poor, and restore christianity faith in our society.

Well I went to the lecture…and it was very good…Sir Brian made it very relevant to the times we live in and the issues we are currently dealing with in Dominica. The questions after were also of a very high standard and also very relevant. The only unfortunate thing about last night is that most Dominicans will not hear it….This type of discourse is how Dominica will progress…Sir Brian was definitely the best person to do the lecture in my opinion and congratulations to the catholic church for hosting it and exposing themselves to very open and honest questions..

This Lecture should be interesting. Sorry, I am too far away to participate as much as I would love to attend. :)
For the past few years the Pope has instituted The Year Of… The First One was the Jubilee Year – 2000. Another was the Year of the Holy Spirit. In 2009 – 2010 was the Year of the Priest. There was also the Year of St. Paul.
In 2012 the former Pope, Benedict XVI instituted the Year Of Faith which ends this year.
I wonder how many practicing Catholics of all knew about it, pay attention to this and prayed the relevant prayers for each of those years including this year?
The Prayer For The Year Of Faith as established by the Archdiocese of Toronto (this may be for all Catholic Churches throughout the world) is:
The Nicene Creed – The Apostles Creed – I Believe In God. This is the Profession of Faith of the Catholic Church.
We have a shorter version which is prayed on Ordinary Sundays. On certain Feast Days of the Catholic Church we pray The Nicene Creed which is called The Apostles Creed.
The Prayer For The Year Of Faith is “The Nicene Creed” as follows:

I Believe in One God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth of all things visible and invisible.
I Believe in One Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand ofthe Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I Believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I Believe in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen!

Brian, I hope you pray this prayer or are praying it. :) Other Catholics, if all of us pray it and The Our Father, we could never lose our faith. We will remain fervent in it.
May the lectures be a holy success. God be with you. God bless all!

I have known Brian since the good old days in Dominica. He and his brother Hugo were students in England and would visit Dominica for their summer holidays.
Brian is a nice guy, always smiling and pleasant. He has been the same person whenever we happen to meet. Note his smile. He never stops similing except when he is annoyed or angry I suppose. God knows in his law career he must have been angry many times to prove his point, etc. He is a devout Catholic and yes, he is the right legal, chosen man. God bless him!
