Radiothon brings in over $30 thousand to UWP legal fund

In just two hours, in excess EC$30 000.00 was raised to help fund an appeal against the High Court’s ruling in the 2019 election petitions brought by the United Workers Party.

The High Court in Roseau recently struck out ten election petitions filed by the United Workers Party (UWP) challenging the results of the 2019 general elections in Dominica.

The UWP has decided to appeal the matter at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC).

On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, Q95’s Hot seat show host Mathias Peltier Jr, alongside leader of the Opposition, Lennox Linton, hosted the radiothon dubbed ‘A Pledge for Democracy.’

In defending the Party’s decision to have the matter appealed, Linton stated, “we went  into the court system seeking justice for the wrongs that were done  in the elections of 2019. We started at the first court and the process allows us, if we don’t have what we feel we deserve from the  court in terms of justice, there is an appeal available to us to a higher court, and we believe that the judgement of  Judge Glasglow was wrong in law and there is a lot that was very off about it. Now, we have  the responsibility to challenge that decision in the appeal court.”

He said several of the Judge’s statements throughout the court proceedings, were taken straight from the oral argument of Senior Counsel, Anthony Astaphan.

Linton went on to point out that the very same judge who, throughout the proceeding, was reminding the litigants that they are not dealing with evidence but with the pleadings, however, turned around in his judgement and attacked the evidentiary foundation of the case, which he says was one of the main reasons they will appeal the decision.

He pointed to the fact that following the 2014 General Election results, the Opposition took the matter to court and although the then Judge dismissed it, the matter was appealed at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) where the presiding justices reinstated it, stating that there was a case to answer.

Linton revealed that there are a number of other matters on the agenda in terms of the fight freedom and democracy in Dominica, particularly defamation law suits. He said that all monies raised will go towards the legal fees for all such cases which pose an existential threat to democracy  and freedom in Dominican.

The Opposition Leader highlighted the importance, in a democracy, of choosing a government, pointing out that over the years, Dominica has been losing its ability and the responsibility that it has in the Constitution, to choose its  government. He said such actions as the legal measures that are being undertaken by the United Workers Party, are being done for the people of Dominica and are beneficial to the country’s future.

His message to those who are daunted, is to be patient and “to keep going; we need to keep putting our best foot forward and doing what is  right and just in the circumstances that we find ourselves, and certainly it is right and just for us to place ourselves before the court system and insist that the court delivers justice. We are not coming to the court asking for favours, we are asking the court to look at our rule of law and adjudicate matters brought based on interpretation of the law and that’s all we ask.”

Linton thanked everyone who contributed despite the difficult times and noted that such initiative would continue in the future “because as you are aware, there is a significant burden on those who exercise their right to freedom of  speech , freedom of expression, and who want to do what’s right.”

The United Workers Party has until the 28th of October, 2020 to appeal the election petition matter.

It’s amazing that people are so consumed with politics that they can’t see left from right. You mean to tell me in these hard covid times, you all pledging to give money to Lennox and his UWP candidates to appeal the decision of the Judge? And instead of condemning his attacks on Judge Glasglow you all are giving money to appeal the case? You all forgot Lennox Linton said prior to the elections that if there were no electoral reform UWP would not partake in the elections. But when the date for election was called he came back and told his supporters that they are going to contest the elections. Let’s be real here. Stop letting Lennox Linton fool you people with his “i am fighting for democracy for the people of Dominica”. All Lennox is doing is using you people to try to become the Prime Minister of this country but guess what, it will not happen!!

ADMIN: We have updated that article, we have included a partial 30 minute audio of his judgement until we can get the full written judgement.

You all are nothing but a..holes, fooling Lennox and make him feel great for nothing. And you all say Dominicans living in abject poverty? $100,000.00 in two hours. Who you all fooling?

  9. October 22, 2020

So Dominicans are not living in poverty as they always say. These people have money to throw away all in the name of Lennox Linton. And he is sure to lose that appeal. Lennox, the people have spoken. They voted the Labour party in big numbers. What is it you do not understand? What part of the English that is hard to comprehend? You have no proof of what you and acolytes are talking about. You will fail again. I hope this time dem people’s money is refundable if you lose. Go find a job and relax, man.

@ds, I endorse your comments, your words are the thoughts of my mind. That is why I do my best to ignore those comments from the UWPites, their thoughts are substanceless and always seem like a broken record against the Government–especially PM Skerrit, who is working so hard on behalf of his Nation and her people–including they, themselves.

Those people are unfairly telling the World that Dominicans are living in poverty and at the same time to go media service announcing how much money they receive by radiophone from the same people whom they claiming to be poor–just to go and throw it out in senseless court appeals.

Lennox and his gang will never have authority over the people of Dominica, God forbid this!

The fact that people without money will use their last cent to help rectify democracy in their country , shows that people are tired of Skerrit and his blatant lies.. you sound like you fraid you doh get cool out in 2024

    October 22, 2020

Lennox, Matt, And All dem UWP supporters that always on Q95 crying out how things bad in DA and how Dominicans are impoverished under Skerrit, yet they can boast of raising over $30,000.00 in two hours. This just exposes them as liars who will do and say anything to try and get in Power. I hope the people pledging all that money supporting Lennox’s lost cause are not the same ones crying poverty.

So u think that is Dominicans living in DA that contribute all that money.Go do ur homework.Zort

        October 24, 2020

ok iknewit, You trying to tell me that Dominicans living outside DA that Lennox and his UWP nitwits trying so hard to take off the electoral register are the same ones funding his bogus election court case? Come again bro, I’m sure you are much more clever than that.

When you consider that Q95 is not heard in a lot of places in Dominica, this haul shows that the people who can hear the frequency are committed to the cause.

    • Pipo
      October 22, 2020

Don’t forget, there are more Dominicans outside Dominica than on the island itself. Many of those listen to Q95 over the internet. You would be surprised how many of them support this cause, even DLP supporters, true DLP supporters that believe in democracy.

    • October 22, 2020

Jonathan Y St Jean, what is your point?

Where in the World have you heard that people standing together are not committed to their cause? Who are the “people” that you speak about, pertaining to Q95, if it is not Lennox and his few loonies, wherever they are? So they have money to throw away; why are they coming here and blasting PM Skerrit about keeping the country in poverty, isn’t that a blasted and loud exaggeration?

Those who join with the devil are committed to his cause as well; do you find them to be the great ones or what? How foolish!

    U Serious?

    What?

    Time to stop this madness.

    Use money wisely!

      My thoughts EXACTLY!!!!
sooooo many people require funds for cancer and other treatment! They set up go fund me pages and minimal amounts are contributed. Yet in 2 hours 30000 was raised to support Lennox and his team who we know are doomed to lose AGAIN!! Sssssmmmhhhhh at Dominican people!!! And all you want to put God in all you story? God doesn’t tell you all to help the cancer patients????? Shame on you all!!!

    October 21, 2020

Strong show of support for the case to move forward to appeal. It will be interesting to see and hear the evidence that the UWP has prepared for its case. Hope this matter moves quickly to appeal and not take another nine months.

    • October 22, 2020

@Know your rights: You better look forward to another 9 years, not 9 months, God controls things in this World and if He was in control against the Government of Dominica, the UWP would not be in radiophone to get money to pay for an appeal.

As a matter of fact, they should be ashamed to do this, because they are telling the World that they have no financial power, which a political party needs to upgrade its standards–not the money resources from the people, which belongs to the Treasury.

The DLP supporters like to boast by asserting that the Dominican electors voted overwhelmingly for Skerrit 18 – 3. They opine that the Opposition should just take their blows and keep silent.

Let me inform them that Papa and Baby Doc won many consecutive elections in Haiti for many election cycles. Just as what presently obtains in Dominica today CORRUPTION did that.

This $30 000 is for a noble cause, that is, to restore democracy to full health. Democracy has been replaced in Dominica with dictatorship, autocracy, totalitarianism, MONOCRACY, and despotism.

Trust me, ad great as that is, trust me, those that didn’t pledge but will give in secret will definitely be more than those who have $30k. I can tell you there are many uwpites and laborites like myself, that are scared of calling Q95 and make it worse, to pledge money to UWP to fight Skerrit. But I can assure when it’s all said and done UWP tally will be in excess of $100, 000.00 in 2hrs. I a laborite say so
