2 more arrested in St Kitts tourist robbery

BASSETERRE, St Kitts — Police on the eastern Caribbean island of St Kitts have charged two more people in the armed robbery of a tour bus filled with cruise ship passengers.

Police released a statement yesterday saying that two men, ages 27 and 28, were arrested in Sunday’s robbery that prompted two cruise ship companies to cancel port calls to St Kitts this week.

Three other suspects have already been charged.

Police say the masked gunmen robbed 16 tourists from the liner Celebrity Mercury as the bus headed to Brimstone Hill Fortress. Tourists officials said yesterday that tours to the popular park have resumed.

It is easy to say “What a shame!” However, when you may easily have been one of those robbed and realized how quickly it happened and how it affected those directly involved in the robbery, it goes a little deeper. I do feel badly that tourism is the islands’ chief souce of income and this will definitely have an effect on that income. The only thing I can say is if an area is found to be unsafe, I have no intention of visiting it and will advise my friends and family to do the same.
