CARICOM scolds US on Cuba

CARICOM heads of state at the just concluded summit

Below is a special statement by heads of state and government of CARICOM and Cuba during the just concluded Fourth CARICOM Summit in Trinidad and Tobago.

We the Heads of State and Government of CARICOM and Cuba gathered for the Fourth CARICOM-Cuba Summit in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago are affronted by the intrusion of the United States against the sovereignty of Trinidad and Tobago.

This is a unilateral and unwarranted extra-territorial application of the United States Helms Burton Law which is contrary to the United Nations Charter and to international law. It also flies in the face of the annual overwhelming rejection of this policy by the United Nations General Assembly.

We reject the intervention of the US authorities which prevented the hosting of the CARICOM-Cuba Summit at the Hilton Hotel. This was one more demonstration of the injustice of the United States embargo and its harmful impact on the daily life of the Cuban people.

On this occasion the extra-territorial action could have impacted on the success of the Summit, but thanks to the commitment and solidarity of the Member States of the Caribbean Community we can celebrate an outcome which reinforces the strong fraternal bonds between CARICOM and Cuba.

While they were busy scolding the US, they should also have taken the opportunity to scold Cuba on its human rights record.

These CARICOM “leaders” are no different from their African counterparts who stay silent while Mugabe abuses his people. It seems like once they belong to the club, they ignore the bad behaviour of their friends.

Caricom does not hold any whip or pull in the region so how can they scold anyone? Whom for them to scold they are not doing it. Caricom is a defanged Lion and has not moral authority to scold anyone when they cant even address corruption in their midst. What a joke!

Some people get their “kicks” – “more political orgasm” by seeking at every turn to”kick” PM Skerrit and when they do not get the opportunity, they cry foul. “Ah magway sa”. Skerrit will and must survive. Our prayers are with him everyday. That alone is killing his detractors. Why don’t they pray for themselves. They do not pray for themselves as all they do is pray for harm to come to Skerrit. They will always fail.

I do no like Spaggs politics. But I admire his answer to serve Dominica. I pray everyday that he will discover his real self and real motive to serve and tell the others enough is enough. I am not praying for doom on Spaggs. Never. like Skerrit he is a human being. Both are deserving of our respect and prayers
