St. Lucia health authorities have reported that the mosquito-borne disease, Chikungunya, has now spiraled out of control, affecting persons in all 17 constituencies on the 238-square-mile island.
Surveillance Officer within the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Michelle Francois, has confirmed that almost all communities in St Lucia have been affected.
Though not stating the specific number of individuals confirmed to have the virus in St. Lucia, Francois said there are more cases on the ground than those that have reached hospitals and community health centres.
Deet – Use insect repellent containing Deet
Dress – Dress in loose long sleeve and long pants
Drain – Drain all standing water
Dusk and Dawn – Remember mosquitoes are active in Dusk and dawn so remember the first two when going out in Dusk and Dawn.
This Chikungunya is a plague. When so many people are affected, this is what it is and since it cannot be contained until numerous people are affected.
Dat ting is a plague that is not no mosquito biznis end of story
It’s a lot more widespread in D’a than the numbers we been given so far. For instance, I know two families of four members each that got it and only one person went to hospital, because of a rash and big loop/boil they got as a result. So Gov’t does not have these numbers in its case list. They need boots on the ground to get real sampling, and that’s how little me found out how more widespread it is here.
I am very puzzled with this illness! Everyone says it is from a mosquito????? Dengue Fever has been in the Caribbean always and Dengue Fever has never ever spread like Chikungunya. I now personally believe that it is not spread by a mosquito and feel it is airborne and could be man made! Some people are getting it and others are not! I am very sorry but there literally cannot be that many mosquitoes going around infecting people by biting them?? The world seems in a bit of a state at the moment. In Africa the Ebola disease they say is getting out of control and there is no cure for Ebola. With travel today we are all at risk!
You are a complete IDIOT.
Crawl back into your hole. Fool!!
It is the ignorance of people like you that will ensure that illness continues. Who are you to make statements like, “I believe”
Could it be a race specific Bio-weapon ?
Man made for sure…
no it not under control in Dca. we are little lucky so far.
I hear u
It takes a collective effort on every one’s part to minimize the havoc that the virus can cause. That means all out war on the Aedes Aegypti mosquito and its breeding grounds. Destroy eggs, water collection for breeding, make use of mosquito nets when possible and spray-on repellent for infested areas.
so, its under control in Dca then?
Spot d sarcasm. Besides, there are 100s or 1000s of cases that are not reported. Persons are still reporting to work with all the symptoms, and not visiting their Drs or health clinics. We need to develop the culture of proactive(ness) in Dominica, for soo many things. We’re soo laid back, for everything.
The only light at the end of this tunnel is: given the speed with which this disease is spreading, soon most residents will get the disease and develop immunity thereby acting as a natural vaccine to stop the spread later on.
In a perverse way, it is almost like a natural vaccination program. Eventually the virus will hit a wall and there will be few people to host it and allowing it to spread.
