Dominica votes against suspending Venezuela from OAS

Dominica was among only four Organisation of American States (OAS) countries which voted against a resolution to suspend Venezuela from the 34-member group.

The resolution was spearheaded by the United States as it condemned President Nicolas Maduro’s re-election last month.

The resolution fell short of five votes 24 needed to suspend a country from the body.

19 member states including Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados, and Guyana voted for it.

Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines were among four countries which voted against the measure.

Belize, Grenada, Haiti, St Kitts-Nevis, St Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, were among the 11 member states that abstained from voting.

Venezuela quickly rejected the resolutioin saying it would enable the United States to continue its “economic war” against the socialist government.

“Those that have supported this are supporting the possibility of a military intervention in Venezuela. Let that be on your conscience,” Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said.

Last year Maduro said it had started the two-year process to pull out of the OAS and Arreaza said the organization “has never done anything for our people of the Americas.”

But US representative to the OAS, Carlos Trujillo, said he was pleased with the vote, adding “I’m glad we are recognizing that democracy matters. We will not recognize illegitimate governments”.

In terms of the recent election in Venezuela, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has already said Dominica has no choice but to recognize Maduro as the President of Venezuela because he was voted in by the majority of those who voted in that South American country.

    No big surprise there.
Dominica is indebted to Venezuela because of “hand-outs” so the government feels compelled to vote for them no matter how untenable the situation.
The same way many people here feel obligated to vote the government because of “hand-outs” .
The only way out of this vicious cycle is to ensure that there are free and fair elections in any and every democracy.

    Shame on DA
Maduro was elected by less than half of the population ; the opposition boycotted the election because it was totally unfair ( opposition leaders jailed )
So what legitimity does this dictator have as president ?
Is this a democratic election ?
Poor Venezuelans ; they have to choose between starving again or flee their own country, like thousands of them have done already.
I imagine that it is difficult for DA to vote against Maduro while getting some advantages from this dicator ( cheap oil, …)
It is a moral issue ! and it has nothing to do with the US.

That is Skerrits understanding of fair elections. He will practise that soon in Dominica. You all mark my words.

“the organization “has never done anything for our people of the Americas.”
When was the last time the US built a modern hospital or a highway or a an airport or a university or housing or provided fuel at a discount or substantial grants for development, or was first on the scene during a natural disaster, or interest free loans or debt forgiveness in the Caribbean?

Trump made a prophetic move in supporting ownership of the temple mount in Israel. (Russia is clamping down on Christianity by law, while the world is becoming more and more immoral!)

All Dominica had to do was be smart and abstain. Hope that decision taken will not have severe repercussions in the near future.

I don’t understand why Mr.Skerrit would not “abstain” from voting.

The state of DA is barely livable and we need ALL the help we can get to build back a vibrant country which was hurting before Ericka & Maria and is now hemorrhaging with a BROKEN people.

It is clear Skerrit does not care about the PEOPLE and focus squarely on his Ego.

I am assured if this was the conditions of St. Vincent, Mr. Gonzales would have an “abstained” vote.
