The largest municipality in Guadeloupe, Abymes, is organizing its 4th edition of highlighting the different islands of the Caribbean. This year, in collaboration with the Dominica Guadeloupe Association, Dominica is in the spotlight.
The week runs from April 13 to the 18.
Below is a statement by the Deputy Mayor, Eric Jalton on the event:
“It is in the logic of sharing, exchange and fellowship that we are hosting the 4th edition of highlighting a Caribbean Week. This year, our neighboring island Dominica and the city of Roseau will be in the spotlight through which we will seek to strengthen trade through this cooperation. Thus we must work together and think of joint projects for the sustainable development of our region.
First of all, we must discover reciprocally our particularities building a valuable, artistic sports and cultural relationship, beyond the language barrier, to bring more natural solidarity through the links that binds us. We need to devise policies that make sense and which will permit us to radiate in a Caribbean that will be beneficial to all.
Welcome to Abymian soil, a place of fraternity, solidarity and love!
May we have a wonderful celebration with interest around the enchantment of the school children we will be hosting and with whom we want to build lasting relationships and fruitful exchanges. This Week Dominique is a highlight for the City of Abymes, which does not tire of discovering the richness and the diversity of its Caribbean neighbors. Thank you for this “togetherness” which also is the base our Creoleity.
Long live Dominica! Long live Abymes! Long live Guadeloupe! Long live the Caribbean!”
Eric Jalton
Deputy Mayor of Abymes
President of Cape Excellence
The delegation coming from Dominica includes Tourism Minister Robert Tonge, Trade Minister Ian Douglas, and Mayor of Roseau, Irene John.
A delegation of 25 children from the Penville Government School, Discover Dominica, and the Karifuna Cultural group, and the Midnight Groovers will also be in Guadeloupe to participate in school exchanges, trade exposition, and cultural and culinary exposition.
One of the highlights of the week of activities is a conference and debate on the economy, tourism and health.
The week will end on Saturday April 18 with a concert with a Guadeloupe-based Dominican reggae group, Harder We Come, followed by the Midnight Groovers.
Its a shame that a Kalinago representative group was put together to attend this event and the office of the Kalinago Chief is yet to be informed far less to be invited to attend this event on the behalf of his people. How serious can we be in the Kalinago Territory? No wonder the development of the community is forever in hibernation!
