Getting ready for OECS Regional Assembly

Dominican parliamentarians will be among those in the sub-region given an opportunity to debate matters affecting the islands when the OECS regional assembly is held in Antigua on June 15 (2012).

OECS officials say plans to host the assembly’s inaugural session “are moving into high gear”.

It is expected that parliamentarians from both sides of the House in individual islands in the sub-region will be invited to participate in the assembly.

However United Workers Party leader Edison James told Dominica News Online on Tuesday that UWP parliamentarians had not been communicated with to date on the proposed assembly.

James said however that he supports the idea of such a discussion forum, and would be willing to participate in the assembly.

Reports from Antigua suggest that OECS Heads of government are expected to convene the assembly’s inaugural session in mid June, on a date close to the anniversary of the signing of the Revised Treaty of Basseterre, which established the OECS Economic Union.

The regional assembly is described as one of the new organs established under the Revised Treaty, and will provide a forum to debate issues affecting the sub-region.

According to the St Lucia-based OECS Secretariat, the OECS Assembly will comprise both government and opposition representatives from each member state, in numbers that reflect their proportionate representation in their respective Parliaments.
