LIAT breaks silence over single engine landing

The Management of LIAT has finally broken its silence over an incident in which one of its aircraft landed in St. Maarten on a single engine.

The incident occurred on July 2 on a flight from St. Kitts.

In a just released statement LIAT acknowledged that an engine on flight LI 369 “experienced a malfunction” and pointed out, “The crew followed standard procedure and shut down the affected engine before safely landing at the airport.”

“The landing was uneventful and passengers were accommodated on another service later that evening,” the release said.

The release pointed out the aircraft was examined by maintenance staff and underwent various checks as stipulated by the manufacturer’s maintenance manual and has since been returned to service.

The incident caused panic among passengers on the flight and media reports from St. Maarten indicate that passengers had to be restrained during the flight by the stewardess because they thought that the aircraft was going down.

Several passengers kissed the ground in happiness after the landing. “I thought that we were all dead, when I saw the engine stop in mid air, and many of the passengers were crying,” one passenger told The St Maarten Today.

now if they had jets now no one would observe the engine failure (unless it were catastrophic)… Ended well so no worries

I am a frequent flyer and trust me the LIAT service sucks but the workers really are dedicated and faithful to their job and to no lesser extent the airline. I still believe the fares are too high and we really need to invest in at least one more airline for Dominica.

All Airlines services suck it’s not LIAT alone. These engines are difficult to maintain.

I love the pilots and mechanics of LIAT, they are a truly dedicated lot of individuals who take a pride in being one of the safest airlines in the world. The safety of their passengers is there total priority! LIAT flies into some really difficult islands for landing and taking off to name Dominica one of them. I think the thing that upsets me most about LIAT is that management seems to cream off the top making the LIAT flights expensive and is the reason LIAT struggles. I thank every member of LIAT who is dedicated and keeps us safe in the sky with their skill and dedication. THANK YOU!

next time you buy a LIAT ticket look and see the airfare cost and then look at the taxes and ask yourself if you are being fair to sy that LIAT airfares are expensive. its the damn govt taxes that drive up the cost of air travel not LIAT

Thank you very much…you are so right. The government are the ones killing us not LIAT. The government taxes are more than the cost of the ticket. We don’t look at the fine print and simply blame LIAT for everything.

      • July 13, 2012

LIAT tickets are very cheap, it is the government fees, and we have too much blasted different nations, CARICOM and OECS needs to address this.

liat is a very scary thing and is depreciating at a rapid rate.I just pray the pilots and mechanics stay focus cause we are depending on you, but if the engines are in the same condition as inside the plane(paint pealing panels falling etc.) then i feel we should be very scared.

Are you doing anything to help Dominica? if Dominica start an Airline, I wont fly on it. Cardinal Express went down, Nature Island express ent bankrupt, Siserou Airways went bankrupt. LIAT all the way baby. I will invest in safety.
