Non-nationals can no longer access gov’t medical treatment in Barbados

Outspoken Bajan attorney David Comissiong has called the new measures 'disgraceful.' Photo credit: nationnews.com

It’s official. Non-nationals can no longer access Government medical treatment facilities in Barbados unless in cases of emergency or a public health threat.

This is the new policy of the Ministry of Heath following a recent review, and which has been communicated to doctors through their union, the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP), via a letter from Permanent Secretary Ronald Fitt.

However, outspoken attorney David Comissiong yesterday branded the reviewed policy a disgrace and said Government should be rebuked for it.

barbados is not a regional welfare service it has to manage its budget and provide for its people, dont get vex with the bajans because they manage a tight ship and have developed their country instead of buying arms and wasting money

This is the reason why CARICOM can go nowhere. Repeatedly, we hear of regional integration, single economy, single market, customs union, monetary union, single economic space, economic integration, freedom to travel, free trade area, etc., etc.. All of this is Bull! The Bajans have repeatedly demonstrated that they are not interested in the welfare of the regional people. Their immigration officers have no respect for Caribbean people; they treat Guyanese cane workers worse than the Botha’s did the blacks under apartheid South Africa; they are always ready to threaten Dominican travellers with jail and now we hear that they are fingering Jamaican women. Who the hell Bajans think they are? Eh! Their darker complexion is at odds with their racist behaviour. It’s about time the regional machinery turns against the behaviour of Bajans and regional togetherness pursue without them.
Sadly, the Bajan system is being revered by our Prime Minister.

So based on yours and Amazing’s comments, I take it that before this labour party took power we did not experience this same situation of flying our ill to Barbados, Guadeloupe etc. Skerrit is the one who put this on us then. We have had excellent health services under the previous administrations!! Yes?? You people blabber and just make no damn sense!!

Bajans are fed up of non nationals leaving Medical bills for their government. We in dominica would
not like that. That is why there is something called medical insurance.

If you’re fingered, raped, almost drowned, got a stroke on vacation or shot at in Barbados you’d have to wait and pay your long money to see a private doc. to get help.

My dear friends, please don’t get fingered in Barbados.; especially at night. Wear a galvanize pantie.

This is pure rubbish. We are the United Islands of the Caribbean, just like the United States of America, so we should be able to access medical treatment in any island in the Caribbean without hesitation or fear. What is Caricom becoming today? A serious joke or what? These Bajans all they do is fingering women and then come up with some stupid Government policies that make no caribbean unity sense.

    April 6, 2011

well well well…Bajans really coming out of the shadow now….i have said it before and i will say it again – let these people be…this CARICOM ting don’t work for us. If anything, let us small-islanders stick together and check our vibes….look how long they talking about CARICOM unity, and integration…for decades….now look at the OECS – just born and we closer in that short period of time than all of CARICOM is, since 1974?

  19. NOT NICE
    April 6, 2011

Its about time that we come to recognize that Bajans think they are so much higher than other Caribbean nationals what a pathetic bunch of losers

    • Bajan to the bone!!
      April 7, 2011

Bajans have worked hard to ensure that they are at the level where they are. By wasn’t anyone commenting when we were paying exuberant taxes to rebuild country’s economy? Barbados has measures in place to advance the country and its tax payers. I wish Dominica would be investing equally in its nationals (who happen to be the ones paying the 15% to get some economic stability). And ppl, please note that emergency…like getting shot, fingered, and whatever else you all have been highlighting will be given medical attention. Do you think it right that the taxpayer with an emergency has to be brushed off because some honky come with a migraine?

      Way to go Barbados!!!

@bajan to da bone: is slackness dat makin dem hate on barbados…their gud times n freeniece goin away now they want to complain…if they were independent n had their own thing they wudnt be mad at why barbados is being so strict bout their stuff…

Come on baj and anony dont mislead the people……the fact is the non-national have been granted immigrant status in barbados which they pay nuff money for. they live, work, pay the same taxes that the local pay, buy/build their houses and come on, should God forbit they’ve got an illness they cant get medical care. but a bajan who lives and works in the US can come back for medical care for free……something is wrong with that picture….i say all the other islands must adopt the same policy as barbados.

So, say I went to Barbados for Cropover Festival or to get a visa and I happen to get in an accident over there or fall ill,I will be left to die?

My oh my!! these people have surely lost it. To think that Fingering and serial raping women andf beating up of fellow Caricom nationals wasn’t enough. Now this?

    • Amazing
      April 6, 2011

I think there is something in the article which speaks to “emergency and public health threat” this is the exception.

      So read carefully my friend.

This will help all you Dominicans to think more seriously about the mandate that you all gave Roosevelt Skerrit on December 19, 2009. All you too wicked, Bajans are suppose to be responsible for providing health care for all you. Wait a minute….the last time I checked Dominica was a soveriegn country.

All you putting hopeless people that do not care one r*ss about all you to run country and then Bajans have to be responsible for providing health care for Dominicans.

Well something is seriously wrong with Dominicans…when are we going to stop thi dependency….are we shouting CARICOM..OECS to piggy back off our neighbors?

Why not put pressure on all you 18-3 majority government to give the health sector in Dominica some serious attention and divert the 27 million dollars earmarked for the malice to our health systm instead of bashing Barbados.

If Barbados has 5 cents to save its people it must leave Bajans lives on the line and save Dominicans first….

Sit back and play foolishness with all you country….but the carpet is slowly being pulled away….
