The head of the Organization of American States is calling for an emergency meeting of regional governments to evaluate Venezuela’s respect for democracy. It’s a move that could lead to the country’s suspension from the hemispheric body.

Luis Almagro on Tuesday said Venezuela had suffered an alteration of constitutional order called for a vote on the matter in the coming weeks.

Venezuela could be suspended from the organisation if two-thirds of the organisation’s 34 member states vote that the country’s leadership has gravely undermined democracy there.

It is sad that in 2016 some of the anti American apologist continue to blame the U.S or all the ills of the region. If we compare the Venezuelan economy with its neighbor Colombian the we ill see that the Colombian economy was growing by over 6% over the last decade while the Venezuelan was in decline. That was while oil was still over $100.00 a barrel and there was an insurgency in Columbia. Chavez and Maduro destroyed the economy by nationalizing and centralizing the whole economy in their own communist style. Colombia was embracing market policies and diversifying the economy. At the same time countries which have been communist for many decades are running towards a market system to provide job and opportunities for their citizens. Maduro has become increasingly become dictatorial and abuser of human rights. The O.A.S is right to act.

people stop belching bubbles and take a step back and assess…how much assistance was given to the OAS countries by the big bad wolf America, compared to what was given by the republic of Venezuela? it is about time we see the light and realize that if America cannot control you, they will destabilize you…case in point Iraq, Afghanistan now Syria .. educate yourselves and stop being brainwashed by the media. yes Venezuela is going through rough times because their main source of income is being impacted by the drop of oil prices so is also Africa and some parts of the middle east…but is on poor Venezuela back they are trying to jump…like the saying goes…every cow knows which fence to cross ” the lower one” the opportunity presents itself and the powers to be are trying to seize the opportunity. America had a big business running in Venezuela before Chavez kick out all Expat… I know because I was one that was denied entry…but that is no reason to plan retribution.

Big Pete, You are right that the OAS has NOT given as much as Venezuela has but that is because it was NOT created to do that. Nontheless, are asking me to accept the narrative that because someone helps you you must remain silent EVEN when they are doing wrong? Venezuela is in this predicament because of Maduro’s policies: children are dying and going hungry, eating out of garbage dumps. A result of his irresponsible fiscal policies and criminally DESPOTIC rule have finally come to light in form of pain and misery. When he takes over the businesses of private citizens , does that put food on their table and lower inflation? The rate of his downfall is proportionate to the income received and wasted. Come on, let’s call a spade a spade.

Not surprised. It take them time. America has systematically influenced the destabilization of Venezuela and has supported this for some time. Dont let the media fool you. It is all about regional power and those in opposition of the current Venezuelan government are backed by American operatives. Power in the region is what it is all about. Watch and mark my words than when/if Maduro is ousted from power and replaced by the politicians, that all of a sudden Venezuela will be “seen” as a better place and friendlier for investments from america and business. YEars ago in a regional energy conference in Florida, America tried to persuade sister islands that Venezuela’s fuel was not good. That Venezuela’s ALBA program was not helping other countries with cheaper fuel, until the Dominican delegation stood up and spoke on behalf of Venezuela as we were benefitting. Only then did the other reps of other countries speak up against the big bad USA. Proof was shown of how we all benefitted.

America is doing to Venezuela what they have done all over the world, ie destabilize governments who oppose their nonsense demands and made up regulations imposed on others. Chavez stood up to America because at the time Venezuela, like Cuba, rejected US influence. America is a CANCER on the world.

Are you for real……………Have you been to Venezuela and other Latin American countries to se the state of poverty there. In some of those countries, the prisoners are the ones running the prisons while the prop up Presidents continue to shout Viva….Viva… mi Burro….while the suffering and poor are without medicine, food, proper housing. with all this Alba, Venezuelans has poor unhealthy housing, overcrowded families and in spite of the oil, the leadership under Chavez created Alba to fight the super powers and the result is ripped their economies to fight USA and the west. What a waste , what a loss, what stupidity.
Your toilet does not flush in Venezuela you blame USA, heavy rains falls you blame USA and west, your murder rate is very high you blame the Mafia in USA. Its blame everyone else as the leadership in Venezuela is in poverty and people like Skerrit and all these “My Brother” talk nonsense goes on and on as the oil wells draws no more riches to abuse to Skerro.

Have you seen it for your own eyes as i have? Venezuela is bad enough yes. But not as bad as the news says it is thats for sure. the other latin american countries seem to have been doing much better than Dominica. I do not blame the USA for toilets and rain, you are obviously being an extremist with your talk. But you CANNOT deny the fact that the US has had a part to play over the years. yo cannot turn a blind eye to it.

It unfortunate situation, but guess what, the situation in Venezuela isn’t the worst in the world. The USA has caused so many countries to be in turmoil and suffering over the past 20 year( Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, etc.) How many times have the OAS and other organizations attempted to try them for these crimes?

The OAS will not try America because they are America. All American operatives working in the interest of the USA.

Poor Venezuela, they did not deserve this. Their downfall occurred as a result of their past times being spearheaded by individuals who have the same mentality as Skeritt. No wonder they used to flock together, they had the same feathers. If Venezuela’s situation hasn’t given Dominicans a clear picture of where their country is heading to then what will? Wish we had some sort of higher power that could be flown in and give Skeritt a good sitting down and ask him to explain the difference between Democracy and dictatorship

Our country’s leadership has gravely undermined democracy in Dominica, the OAS needs to move against Dominica next or together with Venezuela. What’s so different in Dominica? no difference. Our democracy is gravely compromised and the people are afraid to act

It’s Weird how Skerrit got that Honorary degree though..In a region so far away from where he lives and works.

I think he just wanted to have that title (Dr.) like the rest of the O.E.C.S PMs (Ralph, Kenny, etc.) but didn’t want to do the hard work..

We all know Skerrit don’t dare vote against Maduro.. at least let’s give him the benefit of the doubt..
