PM Skerrit says OAS chief should be fired -news report

OAS chief Luis Amalgro

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has been quoted by news organization teleSUR as saying that head of the Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary-General Luis Almagro should be fired.

According to teleSUR, Skerrit was reacting “to the constant attacks” by Almagro against Venezuela.

“The OAS has lost its way,” Skerrit was quoted as saying in an interview with teleSUR

According to the news organization, Skerrit said the OAS should not interfere in Venezuela’s domestic affairs and Almagro “should be fired.”

“The secretary-general should be impartial about all topics, as he is not the head of any country. The OAS should not allow any secretary-general to bypass his/her functions and assume a disrespectful position against a sovereign country,” he said, according to teleSUR.

In the past, Almagro had branded President Nicholas Maduro, a “dictator” for stifling the Venezuelan opposition.

Meanwhile, Venezuela has announced that it will begin the process of withdrawing from the OAS.

Foreign Minister, Delcy Rodriguez stated in a televised address on Wednesday that the government has been forced to counter what it sees as an attempt by the OAS and conservative regional governments to topple the Maduro administration.

“Tomorrow, as President Nicolas Maduro has instructed, we will present a letter of complaint to the OAS and we will begin a process that will take 24 months,” she said.

Presently Venezuela is in the middle of a crippling economic crisis that has led to high food prices and a lack of basic goods.

Also the country is being rocked by political unrest with at least 28 people killed so far this month.

Several of them were shot in anti-government protests that turned into clashes with riot police.

Boy these guys have guts. People are dying everyday from crime and delinquency, starvation lack of medicine etc because that regime has completely ruined the country but it’s the head of the OAS who needs to be fired for wanting to bring a resolution to those issues? The man is 100% right. Maduro is a dictator and a tyrant and needs to get out.

I wish some of these government ministers could spend couple weeks down in Caracas living like the average Venezuelan so they can see what these people have to through. The situation of the country right now is more than clear and anybody who stands with Maduro stands against the Venezuelan people. It’s as simple as that.

The purpose of the OAS is to strengthen the peace and security of the Western Hemisphere; promote and strengthen democratic governments; prevent and resolve conflict between member states while respecting principles of nonintervention; and prevent aggression against member states. To a lesser extent the OAS is also charged with finding solutions to the economic, political, and social problems of member states; promoting social, economic, political, and cultural development; and limiting the proliferation of arms so as to devote resources to economic and social development. The OAS thus advances peace, security, understanding, and development among it members. THATS THE MANDATE OF THE OAS. SEE IF SPEAKING OUT AGAINST WHAT IS GOING ON IN A MEMBER STATE IS INTERFERANCE

If Amalgro (Trump supporter) is so concerned about the welfare of OAS states in speaking against Venezuela, why isn’t he speaking against the wall that Trump wants to build between Mexico (a member state) and the US (also a member of OAS), that is certainly an OAS concern?

    Fact (Skeritt is right);
The head of a regional organization, should be impartial as his position is not a political one.
He cannot speak against St Lucia and then speak positively about Trinidad nor speak against or support a country of his liking, if you do it for one you must do it for all. specifically the US an OAS member building walls between other member states (Mexico)!

Skerritt when the governance of a country meets the standards where the citizens are protesting every day, where they are hungry and have to resort to killing cats and dogs for survival, then that is not normal and a failed state.Intervention by responsible countries and institutions is the responsible thing to do.Are you saying that those countries which intervened in Syria, Lybia for humanitarian reasons were wrong to do so.I don’t get you man.You want to hide behind law whilst the discrimination against people continues.Even the Catholic Church joined in the fight to grant slaves the freedom even if the church owned slaves at some point. You are a disgraceful leader, Skerritt.

Some people do not utilize their common sense. There are times the citizens must take a back step, sit down, contemplate, keep peace in the nation and obey. Much could be achieved with this attitude.
Nothing good is achieved by protests/riots. The people make themselves poorer, much strife, injuries and deaths occur. They lose more. Those who are to be blamed are the rioters.
Maduro should force all those idle people to work as is done in the communist countries; everybody and able body at that work.
Those in other countries who enjoy a democratic country, who uphold them, empathize with them and encourage them to riot, they should go and join them. You do not deserve to live in such a country and lack appreciation.

Here is what you need to know about normal, it is not what others tell you what is normal. Your ignorance is pervasive through all you comments, you make your partisan political beliefs the central focus of your augment. The political unrest in Venezuela is far more complex than your silly beliefs regarding such matter. The problem in Venezuela involves hidden forces.

To suggest that intervention by responsible countries and institutions is the responsible thing to do, really, again, this
      shows ignorance on your part.

      • Jonathan St jean
        April 28, 2017

@Gary,let’s be real about Venezuela and outside forces. Is it outside forces who misspent the country’s resources and mismanaged the economy to the extent that the shop shelves are empty and the people are hungry? It is the failed, backward policies of Chavez and his successor Maduro which is responsible for that. They wanted to be the mother and father of the Venezuelan people. These failed policies have been tried before and anyone with half a brain, much less one who wants to be called “doctor”,with a paid for honourable doctorate, should know that.Yes,a government has to assist the less fortunate, but when it feels it has to help all of it’s supporters with need, rather than creating the environment, both physical and economic and legislativly to help citizens pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.Look at all the country’s around Venezuela, none of them employ it’s backward policies and they are doing fine.Losers always want to blame other rather than look in the mirror.

      • Dante Jones
        April 29, 2017

By hidden forces you mean all the corruption that was going on from since Chavez time that just went on unchecked resulting in the siphoning away of billions from all the oil money. Or are you talking about the socialist marxist policies which crushed the private sector and created a culture of parasites completely dependent on government handouts.

Luis Almagro (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈlwis alˈmaɣɾo]; born June 1, 1963) is a Uruguayan lawyer, diplomat, and politician, currently serving as the 10th Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS). Almagro is a member of the Broad Front party (Frente Amplio), and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2010 and 2015, during the Presidency of José “Pepe” Mujica.
Almagro was elected to the OAS on “More Rights for More People”, viewing his tenure as an opportunity to reduce inequality throughout the Western Hemisphere. “As OAS Secretary General, I am both government and opposition. I must be the voice of those without a voice; the more discriminated against. I must be the voice of those who suffer inequality; who suffer from the lack of protection of their rights; and I must be the staunchest defender of those rights.” 8)

I think they should tell the opposition and rioters in Venezuela (not all of them are), to cool it. They continue to harm themselves. As they do, they cause the situation to grow worst.

      • Dante Jones
        April 29, 2017

Nonsense. The whole reason they’re in that situation now is because they sat idly by while the country descended into economic decadence. They should have been rising up long time. The people have peaceful protests and the government aided vigilante militias shoot and people and even end up killing some causing chaos. They also have armed national guards spraying people with high powered hoses and bombing them with tear gas for simply MARCHING. The vandalism is not being done by people who are protesting. It’s most likely government supporters who are the type of degenerate scum that will take advantage of any opportunity to get something.

I hope Kenneth Rijock finds this statement of Roosevelt Skerrit quoted by news organization teleSUR , and put it up on his blog so Americans and the rest of the democratic world can see what kind of dictatorship that is growing up in the tiny island of Dominica. I will for sure search for the voice audio of this statement and post it on YouTube. Another reason why Skerrit MUST GO

    • Let The Truth Be Known

Many people, wherever they reside, are not as gullible as you are. Maduro did not tell them to riot. When the people decide to stop rioting and the opposition cease to encourage them, only then there will be peace in Venezuela and the situation will return to normal.
They want Maduro out and he is not going anywhere. Good for him!

The OAS should not nag a member on domestic policy, but Maduro’s acts are much more than that. He has violated his constitution, subdued the other branches of government, seized private property, turned schoolteachers into propagandists, and reduced citizens to starvation. No one who could feed the country will plant seeds knowing that the plants might not be his, or that he might not be a free man to harvest them. DNO goes out of its way to portray the Venezuelan crisis as something that just happened to Maduro. Why do Mr. Skerrit and his ambassador carry water for this man?

    • Let The Truth Be Known

I can tell you, if they did not openly turn against him which annoyed him, all this would not have happened. People must know who they are and know their place. They must exercise patience and obey authority. They should know that nothing lasts forever.
Learn a lesson from the people of Europe during the reign of Hitler. Where is Hitler today? God and that soul know. We will find out on Judgment Day, for everyone. God has His plan.
Furthermore, you do not fight fire with fire. People need to learn these virtues. They should know, no matter what occurs, what befalls them, God is in control. They could learn this from the prophets and disciples as St. Paul.
Some people say they are Christians but they do not practice Christianity. If a government is not harassing you, why are you harassing him? Live and let live and let God take care of everything as you fervently pray to Him. Some of you have yet to learn that.
Trump would not take your nonsense.

        April 28, 2017

@Let The Truth Be Known, your policy that people must obey authority is nothing but laughable.Jesus went into the temple and overturned the tables of the merchants and moner changers, was that obeying the authorities? You are also saying that slaves were wrong to rise up against their owners and Masters. You are a sick individual with poor logic and reasoning.

      • Fun&Frolic
        April 29, 2017

In other words, you’re saying the Venezuelan people should just take their blows, keep their collective mouths shut, do nothing and suffer in silence? They should just wait until cosmic forces eventually align to relieve their suffering? Well, I have news for you: Heaven helps those who help themselves. The Venezuelans are not so stupid as to cast their eyes up to the heavens and wait for the pie in the sky to be delivered to them. They are prepared to take their destiny into their own hands and free themselves from the economic tyranny of the Maduro regime. I wish the Venezuelan people all the best, and I hope their relief from Maduro comes sooner rather than later.

      • Jon Jones
        April 30, 2017

What utter nonsense!!! Stop quoting this Christianity that you have been brainwashed into for centuries to coerce Dominicans of today to hold onto this relic of slavery. Grow some balls and stop hanging onto this white diety in whose name millions of your ancestors were dumped overboard and never even made it to these shores!
What we have is a powerful rich elite who control the wealth and resources like a family enterprise. They use it to influence and control the population by any means to further increase their wealth and power. They stife any opposition. Sounds a bit close to home actually
