St Lucia shootout fuels debate over extrajudicial killings

CASTRIES, St Lucia – By their own account, the police said they had been monitoring five men who attempted to rob a restaurant in the south of the island, and in the ensuing gun battle, four were shot and killed, while the fifth died a few days later in hospital.

Autopsies are to be performed on the five men Tuesday. But the May 5 killings have rekindled a simmering debate as to whether the police here are engaging in extrajudicial assassinations, following rumours that some alleged criminals killed since the start of the year were on a death list drawn up by St. Lucia law enforcement officials.

Add a crime multiplication factor of 4/ year. With the iradication of these four thugs it means that the crime rate would be down by 20 per year. Now that is something to think off.

And those deceitful bastards told us that Tiyanni was way to hard on the criminals. Ebeh weh papa.

There shouldn’t be extra judicial killing in any democratic country. If the police do it in self defense then fine but if you kill be criminal just to get rid of him, that also makes you one. If a family member of mine was killed by a police “death squad”, no police officer you be safe.

The debate will be all that it is a debate. It could have been my brother I would not feel sorry for him. He would have been very wrong to engage in such activities. I read an article that two women were raped in SLU on one of the most popular beaches in the south. Do you think Tourist will come?

Look like the Feds are fed up! St Lucia has soooo much crime. For such a small place, and I know the kind of weapons these boys have. To think they may use them against police, the police must shoot back to survive. Thing is, criminals don’t seem to care with a little jail time no more. They make so much money that thy become millionaires. So what is five ten years, when you coming home to a few million dollars?

We need a better deterrent than jail. Either death sentence for the guilty or ensure We get all third assets. The problem is, does the court system itself work? Is it flawed? Do judges and investigating officers accept bribes? Does evidence go missing? Do the offenders get an early heads up? And ofcourse, are their assets even trackable? The courts and government need an iron fist!

The rule of law! every time. Just ask BEN LADEN in hell and closer to home ask the Jamaicans; Now thats your answer.

when a man decides to become criminal I have no problems when the police put a few small holes in his body. we young people should learn to get an education or a skill and work hard or face the consequences.

Why is it so common accross the world that activist are always so ready to defend the criminals?
St. Lucia has a serious crime problem and the police are dealing with it.

Who speaks for the victims of violent crimes? These criminals are getting what they deserve. The criminal justice system should be reviewed in all these islands. The Justice system seems incapable of dealing with these criminals.

Maybe some of these activist lawyers are benefiting in some way from those criminals.

    May 17, 2011

I much rather hear the news of those fellas meeting their doom than hearing sex of them Rape two white British Tourist, or an innocent Island girl or Rob a bank and shoot innocent people in the process.

Call me what ever but you want to go and Rob Banks, engage in gun fight with police and then somebody should feel sorry they put all you lights out.

I can read such news everyday until little by little the criminals realize that a life of crime is not the answer.

Until then let their blood be shed rather than the innocent….

Hazzards of the trade I guess. I’m all for a firm hand of law. All those complaining about the police should go and speak to the families of those tourist that have gone their to enjoy and have themselve a break from hard work not to be robbed and killed. Also speak to those loved ones in St Lucia that have lost familiy members to lawlessness!!

  21. Cool!!
    May 17, 2011

You mean a few criminal bandits and socila mistfits were given their due treatment and a whole lot of people vex about that? i wonder if they would be making all that noise if it were five policemen who were killed by criminals.

Guess they would revert to the usual government bashing and lamenting that enough isn’t being done to deal with the Criminals? What hypocrac!! Let the police do it’s job, and if (like with Bin Laden) it means to kill these bastards first then ask the questions, then so be it.

A few less criminals in the Caribbean. A more peaceful society for you and me!!!
