Christians should marry Christians, not unbelievers

Greetings in the name of my Master, Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

There are too many Christians who are getting married for the wrong reason. Some call it love, but it is for  sex. Why do you want to get married to a unbeliever when the Bible said it is wrong? Most Christians just want a reason to have sex, so marriage is just the right one. Believers should marry believers. Wait on God for a husband/wife!

2 Corinthians 6:14 said, “Be you not unequally  yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? (If a Doctor is following a thief, he is more likely to become a thief than the thief become a Doctor.)

Sooner or later such marriage is not going to work, because you have nothing in common with him /her. For example whenever you want to watch any christian program  on the  T.V, talk about Jesus Christ or read your Bible, it will irritate him/her. Going to service with you will become a  problem, so why do you want to go through that when you can marry a believer like you who love the things of God?

2 Corinthians 6:15: “And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?”

There are some that  will talk about your friends that are not believers, there are some none Christians who are better friends than believers and friends like that you need to keep. But we are talking about marriage here not friendship.

Love and best wishes always.

Most of you commentators are like the mad hatter in ALICE IN WONDERLAND who jumped on his horse and rode off in every direction.

The pastor said on the basis of 2 Corinthians 6:14 a Christian should not marry an unbeliever (meaning a non-Christian). This is the Word of God! If you do not like it lump it, but do not shoot the messenger. :-x

The pastor is an evangelical Christian. This column was for evangelical Christians. Born again men and women. He was not referring to people who are only religious, or just church members, or people who belong to this or that cult, or a heathen religion. He was referring to people who have received Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, and want to please Him. But suddenly a number of various species and unknown varieties came out of the wood work and began talking about their marriages or telling about the experiences of others. What they said did not even fit the context.

Christians are not to marry non-Christians. Some disobey God and pay dearly for it . But God is also sovereign. Some times He saves the unbeliever. This is because He has a plan for each life and He does very thing according to His purpose.

However, if you are a real Christian and marry a child of the devil you will have trouble with your father-in-law!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

    Dear Pastor

I am a christian sister myself and a single one at that. I holds fast to that very conviction, christian should marry persons of like faith because it is clearly stipulated in God’s word and because we see the result around us every day.

Christians should not be unequally yoked! My father often says, “we wait and depend on God for every thing else except a spouse”. Is it that we don’t think God has what i takes to find us a good and the right spouse?

But, oh dear pastor, your statement is very judgemental. How did you decide that christians are only getting married to have seix? This statement is very judgemental and insensitive and isn’t becoming of a pastor or christlike.

we are all entitled to our own opinions, yet our opinions CANNOT,and WILL NEVER, change the word of God or the truth of God. God is eternal and so are his words. why crucify a pastor for simply saying what God’s words say? we are not fighting the pastor but God himself.
i also believe we would stone Jesus when he said” you are of your father the Devil and his works you shall do” that tells me not every one is a child of God.

Pastor Rawle is right. Dominica is a religious country and not a godly one. From those responses, one can see we do not study our Bible and not many Christians on island. The Bible is clear and makes no mistakes. We are not all children of God and Christians. Christians are a peculiar people, sanctified. When one receives Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, repent of their sins, that person is saved and is changed. The word of God becomes clear to them. Stop ridiculing the man of God and talking rubbish when you do not understand the things of God. There will be surprises in heaven. repent nation

I Believe in the Bible, but do you also believe in History? When the Bible was written (better yet the manuscripts and letters), there were NO denominations NONE! The bible does not contradict itself but we are the ones looking for problems where it does not exist. They were still Christians in Corinthians when Paul wrote his letters asking them to be mindful and not stray away from the Church. We are one body in Christ, (I am not saying that we are all Christians, some of us do not follow His commandments and “believe that because as a baby some water was sprinkled on our heads we have the keys to the kingdom”) but we who practice and follow, and genuinely believe, are all part of His kingdom. (My opinion is subject to change — this is just my opinion at the time of writing and should not be considered as truth)

      • Humanist
        June 3, 2011

Actually, the bible is full of contradictions, and history itself is the biggest contradiction. The “history” set forth in there is vastly different from what science has uncovered, suggesting that the bible’s history is either wrong or was never meant to be taken literally. If the latter, it still doesn’t make it right.

As for “True Christian,” a civilized nation is one in which people are free to believe in what they choose to and to act respectfully towards others, not a nation in which everyone is expected to be of one religion.

I agree, I am Christian and I had a very difficult marriage to a Christian man, he was quick to anger and judgemental and very difficult in many ways, I was unhappy and it was harmful to my health. I eventually divorced him which was a great decision. I met a loving man who understands my health needs and he supports me in the ways I need. He is not Christian but he does feel that he loves and believes in God. I am happily married to him, I do pray one day he will meet Jesus but it is in Gods hands not mine. I am sooooo much happier, healthier and better off with my non Christian man! I even will go so far as to say God brought us together. He is an answer to prayer an drew incidentally from what I’ve seen after thirty years in the church most Christian men scare me at this point, I’ve seen them to be controlling, angry and very quick to judge, also insensitive and not very smart, just saying they really need to grow up. I think it’s because they only focus on their spiritual health

I don’t know who muslim is talking to.T say islam teaches tolerance and compassion toward people of other faith is a farce.

Muslims who live in the west are free to practice their faith and are free to ask people of other belief to join their cult. But in islamic countries,a muslim cannot leave and become a catholic or any other faith.IT IS AGAINST THE LAW.And you know this religion is brutal. In the U.S.A. it has happened on several occasions young girls whose parents are muslims they made this mortal mistake, falling in love with nonmuslims they are murdered by their father.
Let me repeat if it was possible for Dominica to become an islamic state. You see these guys who are promoting islam?the will tell us you cannot criticise allah, their socall holy book, and their prophet. As I mentioned you will be killed.
So when muslim say his god as him to marry nonmuslim is a farce.

Now on the subject…..I know a lady raised in the faith, became a believer, baptise she went to the U.S. marry an unbeliever, he is also a divorcee and now she is kicking hells, there is no part of her body her husband is not cursing and that in front of the children, his money is to buy drugs. She has threaten to just walk out on him. He does not want to hear anything about God.

The word of God is final. 2 Corinthians 6:14

      June 3, 2011

Unfortunately Mr John Charles, you have like many others have been deceived by the western media and system whose sole aim is to destroy “religion” from its roots.

In the west, we are not as free as you would like to think Mr John Charles. Let me share with you a few examples, everyone knows the ban passed in France preventing muslim women from wearing the niqab (face veil) which is part of Islamic law and culture. Secondly, a campaign is launched so that homosexuals are able to marry and live together, however, polygyny (the permissibility of a man having plural wives) is frowned upon and it is “illegal.” It is called “bigamy” thus one can be imprisoned. Where is the freedom Mr John Charles?

Mr John Charles the main reason why muslims seek asylum in the west is due to the massive chaos the west created in many of these countries. They invaded muslim lands, robbed them of their resources, the same which occurred in Africa. The CIA and other western intelligence assassinated personalities that they considered and impediment to their goals; they helped dictatorial regimes to be “leaders” of the muslims to further their cause.

Mr John, symbols of Islam are sacred to us, this is stated in the Holy Quran, thus it is grave disrespect to desecrate our books, our masjids (place of worship), the prophet Muhammad and other sacred objects. We hold these very dearly. It saddens me that christians do not hold their items sacred anymore but of mere play and amusement, for e.g, when the church of nativity (the place where christians believe Jesus was born) was gunned by zionist jews, the christian world said or did nothing regarding their sacred symbol, christianity has nothing to stand on Mr John Charles. If Christians did not stand up for their church of nativity, how will they stand for me as their brother if I am oppressed?

What brutality are you speaking about? Chapter 5 of the constitution of Dominica consist of the treason laws, one faces the death penalty if found guilty like Frederick Newton in 1985. We must be balanced Mr John Charles and have an open mind. The prophet Muhammad has taught us to ensure we take account of ourselves before taking account of others. I am sure Jesus reiterated that one must remove the beam off their eyes first.

Mr John Charles, I will show you compassion today because it seems you are one of those who sincerely do not know better. May Allah open your heart to at least learn about Islam from an objective point of view, that is, from the horses mouth.

a cousin of mine who was 18 at the time, was told by her pastor that she
should break up with her boyfriend and marry a 47 year old man, who was a member of the church.
why would anyone with good intentions encourage an 18 year old girl to marry a man who is old
enough to be her father? she didnt love him and she wasnt attracted to him in the least bit.
this is a misuse of power and authority.

Now this is where I think that churches need to be careful. Not all members might “Believe” in everything that you say, some things will not sit too well with them. I grew up Catholic but never willingly said the hail mary (Till this day I do not believe in its power), and there were other things too that i could not accept about the catholic church, now if i was to grow in love with someone from another church (who considers catholics unbelievers), we would get this unequally yoked talk, and they might even refuse to marry us, where really and truly me and my partner share exactly the same opinions and faith on the things that matter for salvation. We are able to bring up our children as christians and maybe christians who are more tolerant of the world.

I really dont understand the argument. What is meant by non-believer, are you saying 7th Day Adventist should not marry a Catholic, Gehoviah Witness should not marry Anglican. All these are believers through their own religion. Or are you saying Christians should not be married to Atheists – who are non-believers, now that I can understand.

    • Lizavier4Jesus
      June 3, 2011

A non-believer is someone who does not believe in God Almighty by faith in His Person of Love, who is Jesus Christ. So an Atheist is considered as a non-believer. But anyone who says I do not believe in God claims to be a non-believer.

But the Pastor has expressed his opinion of human wisdom and philosophy. This opinion does not always demonstrate a negative effect. I know a pastor who said he was non-believer. His father died and Atheist. But he married a woman who was raised in a convent. He learned to believe in God, and he is now leading a church.

There are many other positive examples of non-believers getting married to believers.

The truth is that not all everyone who claim believe are saints. Faith demonstrates that we believe and Love in us bonds others to what we believe. I believe that it is the unfaithful believer, when married to a non-believer, who ends up with a colapse marriage.

Mots, I see where you are coming from. That is why this Pastor is writing those article that do not teach people anything.

It seem as if when the truth is spoken most people see it as foolishness that they cannot respond to, and for that reason the writing get a very low response. But that is what the apostle Paul tells us also: For the message of the Jesus Christ–the cross–is foolishness to those who are perishing. 1st. Corinthians 1: 18

So this Pastor takes pleasure in writing all sorts of confusion, because he gets the attention. Noneteless, attention and confussion are still vanity that will pass away in the wind, when we are least expecting. Just the people did not when Noah entered the Ark and the flood came and took them all away–less we forget!

    Rawles,
It’s not because someone is not a member of your church that this person should be called an unbeliever. I was born and raised a Roman Catholic and I can assure you that your are not a better person than I am. I believe in the same GOD that you believe in. We are all God’s children and I am fed up of all of you self-proclaimed righteous ones condeming people like me who do not belong to your church. I’ve been invited to several non-catholic churches and have accepted the invitations but it’s not the same for people like you narrow-minded ????? Let God be our judge; not you or your blind followers.

    • Lizavier4Jesus
      June 3, 2011

The Roman Catholic Church is the largest denomination of the Churches. The Roman Catholic Church, was the only group of Christians, until the split that created Orthodox Catholic Churches. That was followed by reforms that came through men, like Martin Luther, John Calvin, even Joseph Smith of the Mormons, Anglicans, Amish of the Mennonite culture, nondenominational churches and so on, etc. But we are all under the name called Christians.

The problem is that the majority of the churches are practicing religion–because we follow the rules of human wisdom and philosophy. Christianity is based on an intimate Love relationship with God Almighty by faith in His Person of Love–His name is Jesus Christ, but many, many people are yet to understand that teaching.

That lack of understanding is the reason we are not bonded as One Body in Spirit and Truth, as Jesus is the Head. So because of that sense of separation we do not even know that all of the denominations are the same people–who are called Christians. So we cannot be a non-believer, regardless of the denomination of our church, unless we choose not to believe in God by our own choice.

In other words, a non-believer is a person who chooses not to believe in God, period–that is all.

      • Dominican Lass
        June 3, 2011

Well Said. My point exactly. It’s time people stop talking religion and and interpreting the Bible to suit their particular denomination. I’d rather be married to an ‘unbeliever’ who loves me, treats me with respect and kindess than a ‘christian’ who treats me like a door mat and we try to pretend that everything’s ok when we are among people. I’ve seen some young ‘christian’ people get married because they say ‘it is better to marry than to burn’ and before the first anniversary they can’t stand the sight of each other. That’s because they mistake feelings of sexual desire (which are natural, by the way) for love. Most times they have given up chances for further education and a promising future just to get married and have sex. They get married with the inexperience of youth and without a stable financial footing, then it’s children one after the other and the cycle of living hand-to-mouth continues. This is a real world. Along with the word of God, it’s time pastors teach young people the benefits of a great education, how to be independent and creative. Give them something else to occupy their minds other than ‘it’s better to marry than to burn’.

    • hmm

I feel sorry for you Pastor, let me share with you the Islamic concept about marrying “unbelievers”

Allah commands the believing muslim men to marry chaste women from ahlul kitab = people of the book meaning jews and christians in chapter 5 of the Holy Quran.

Islam teaches tolerance and compassion towards people of other faiths. What the western zionist media has done is to vilify islam like they have done to people of African descent. Will you be fooled by the media again oh people of Dominica? Have you no sense?

In order for you to understand Islam, one needs to read and be around practicing muslims, then you will see the beauty of Islam. Islam is very attractive and practical that is why many are tired with the lies of the west and are embracing the truth.

WHY DO MUSLIMS STILL BELEIVEING IN THE OLD TESTAMENTS DO JESUS COME TO CHANGE EVERYTHING .

      • Muslim_always
        June 3, 2011

We do not believe in the “Old Testament.” We believe in the Holy Quran, the final revelation revealed by Allah to the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.

We believe in the previous scriptures which were revealed in their original language and the prophets who were sent with those scriptures. Thus we believe in prophet Noah (p), Abraham, Moses, David, Ezekiel, Joseph, Jesus etc. We believe in the original Torah, Psalms and Gospels which were originally revealed to these messengers of Allah. We do not believe in the scriptures the christians and jews hold today as valid as these scriptures have been corrupted with polytheism and other major flaws.

The Holy Quran is the final and a complete code of life which addresses absolute monotheism, ethics and manners, economics, political, military, social, inheritance etc.

It is unfortunate Mr Chicago that religion and state are divorced in the west thus the moral decay on the rise, however, Islam is a complete system independent on it’s own.

I advise you to look into the following sites, keep an open mind, may Allah guide you. Ameen. By Allah I have witnessed to the person behind the keyboard of Francis Francis Chicago at this time. My obligations are done towards you, that is to convey the message.

There is no need for discussion on this matter as far as i know……….. chrisitians are clearly instructed by the word of God concerning this. Those who have disobeyed will tell you how difficult their lives have been….. and they bear daily the brunt of their disobedience.

What is a child of God Almighty doing making convenant with a child of the devil? The word of God is crystal clear about this.

As for those persons who are offended by this truth, let them me. Let God be true and every man a liar. Thats all there is to it.

It’s always in small and developing/undeveloped countries that people take the religion of their colonizers so seriously and literally as to write and publish articles like this and to respond with almost no real skepticism. Why is that? And yet, when I write this, someone will write some nonsense about how bigger nations with better education are “evil” and “corrupt” and, most astonishing of all, “stupid” or “ignorant.” It is as if these smaller countries, like ours, believe they know everything and refuse to hear otherwise.

Come on. You would think this is the Dark Ages, with this kind of rhetoric. This should be an age of learning, since we have the Internet at our fingertips. This should be an age of questioning and critiquing. By no means should this be an age where the majority of people will attack you for doing those things and where we make pronouncements like the above article, as if Europe’s medieval centuries have simply been transplanted into the Caribbean–which, for the most part, is the case.

I am not writing this to make some kind of religious argument but more to ask why there are so few people, as far as I can tell, who honestly want to seek further knowledge and ask questions about what they have been brought up with in Dominica and the wider Caribbean. It is as if there is an atmosphere that wants to stifle growth and development, which is similar to the atmosphere that unfortunately hovers around many of our industries (though these are different issues).

Rawles stop being a damn hypocrite. Let people marry who the hell they want. For Chrsit said I have come not for the healthy but the sick. If the believer marries who she/ he wants then they can convert based on the good deeds coming from the other. Religion have no place in matters of the heart (love). Race, color, creed, religion, nationality or ethnicity have nothing to do with our feelings and desire to be the other’s partner. Wheel and come again but I will remain in catholic because the church recognizes mixed marriages.

We do not believe in the “Old Testament.” We believe in the Holy Quran, the final revelation revealed by Allah to the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.

We believe in the previous scriptures which were revealed in their original language and the prophets who were sent with those scriptures. Thus we believe in prophet Noah (p), Abraham, Moses, David, Ezekiel, Joseph, Jesus etc…
YOU HAVE SAID THAT YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN THE OT? THEN WHY DO YOU BELIEVE IN ABRAHAM,MOSES,DAVID ETC???THEY WERE ALL WRITTEN IN THE OT!!!! AND YOUR QURAN IS NOT THE REAL BOOK INSPIRED BY GOD,IT IS THE BIBLE ONLY!!! 2 TIMOTHY 3:16..AND YOU WHAT IS YOUR BASIS THAT QURAN IS TRUE???JESUS IS THE TRUTH,JOHN 14:6, NOT YOUR PROPHET MUHHAMED..JESUS IS THE LAST SPOKESMAN OF GOD..HEBREWS 1:1,2..

Sir,you shouldn’t use this verse as your basis for refuting the pasto’s sermon..you are using the wrong context of verse/message in the bible.this verse has nothing to do with marriage that God requires His children to obey..
2 Corinthians 6:14 said, “Be you not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?
since this is a written word of God through apostle Paul,we should rather listen and obey God with regards to marrying a person God wants us to end up with..not our will or wants/desire,but God’s will to happen in our lives…bless you!!

No matter what justifiable reason you come up with for marring an unsaved man or woman, the bible clearly states that, you should not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. whether you believe it or not, accept it or not, doesn’t change that fact that it is what it is. And there are people who marry for sex, its not being judgmental it is the truth. The fact is as Christians we should wait on God. At the end of the day if you choose to do as you please and go against the word of God you will suffer the consequences of your choice, because you may have a short moment of bliss but in the long run you will regret it.

    Pastor Rawles,

As christians I believe we need to stop reading one part of the bible, because the bible does not contradict. The same bible that you read say in 1 Corinthians 7:14 says,

“For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.”

There are many spouses who are not born again christians, who have a desire to be, and because of their born again partners, are striving to become christians themselves. Do you expect an unbelieving husband/wife to not be irritated when his/her “christian” wife/husband is listening to a christian program or go to church, when she/he does not live an exemplary christian life?

Pastor, I believe you need to evaluate your own beliefs.

    • Read again
      June 2, 2011

      @ Proud Dominican,

1 Corinthians 7:14, comes into effect when you have 2 unbelievers married couple and 1 accepts Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
The bible does not contradict itself. We should not use 1 Corinthians 7:14 as an excuse to get married to an unbeliever because we already knows the truth! The question is are we getting married out of love or lust. The preacher is right a lot of us is using marriage to satisfy our lustful acts just to call “Marriage” legal. When you cannot satisfy the lust anymore you will leave the person and look for another one, which scripture are you going to use as cover up or justification !? We must stop using the Holy scripture to cover up our sins….

      • rad
        June 3, 2011

my issue is with the use of the words Christians and unbelievers, especially unbelievers, even the devil believes. We have corrupted the christian faith so much that if the only difference between one christian church and another is that one allows its women to wear pants whereas the other doesn’t, each church still refers to the other church’s members as unbelievers regardless even if they both preach Christ, baptism, repentance etc. the core of Christianity. I do not believe that Jesus Christ came to have His church so segregated. Read the bible as a novel and you will see that it is really a love story, stop doing extractions here and there to create more separations amoung ourselves. Maybe if we take the time out to find out why we are different we would be able to live with each other in a peaceful and God fearing society.

  41. Neutral
    June 2, 2011

The Bible does say “don’t be yoked with unbelievers”, so the pastor is correct. My contention is, talk to anyone in Dominica and they can tell you of some church leader that have a woman or man here there and everywhere. Pastor, PLEASE address this situation. Let us please God so that as HE promised, he will heal our land.

    June 2, 2011

Now I believe this is a crazy pastor. This world has changed so much. The way in which people dressed to come to service 20 years ago and now is so different. The world has gone wild and mad. People have sex at all times and places. What makes you think that they marry to have sex. That could have been the reason in 1970, but not now. People sin with no conscience and fear of God. Sorry if YOU got married for sex and there was/is no love in your marriage but other marry for love, trust, affection and to build a life with the ones they care about.
Sorry if your teachings are not strong enough and the numbers in your church are getting smaller. If that is the case I understand why you should worry and ask for Christian to marry Christians. My church is growing even without marriage. When couples do get married the bond just gets stronger. I feel sorry for you knowing that you have to stoop so low and that you live a loveless life; Pastor.

Many of us young people who worship in the christian faith are being mislead by most of our pastors. Marriage is a vow that should not come from any pastor. You can advice us, but not because we worship in your church means we are ready to be husband and wife. I have seen many of my friends marriages go down the drains including mine who today is suffering the consequences of eing pressured by my pastor to get married. My husband left me with our 2 months baby while he is elsewhere living with another woman.

Pastor Rawls marriage should be a decision between two people who believes they are ready to commit their lives together in holy matrimony…..not because my pastor thinks we are ready.

I believe for too long we are making those major mistakes

Are you kidding me? The man speaks the word of God and though it may have offended you, it is the truth. God does not want his children to marry the devil’s children. You do not like it then take it to the Lord in prayer. Pay attention to what the man is saying and stop blaming everyone for your broken heart.

      June 2, 2011

sometimes young people are really forced into marriage, but not all the time. A marriage is not a decision between two people, mayb that is Y it having so many issues, God should be present in your marriage, when it comes to making a decision to marry it is something that you should pray hard on and not make the decision on your own. that is y so many marriages fail.

Christians love to split themselves into small sects. I think we are the ones making this unequally yoke thing to create problems in the relationship. The bible rightfully says unbeliever and not non-christian. You guys take it to mean that i have to go to your church to marry one of you although i believe in Jesus Christ and hold true to what i need to do to be a christian, the extras that i choose not to accept will not take me any closer nor any further away from Christ, some are just human traditions. Why can’t the core of Christianity be enough to classify us all as believers? What are we supposed to believe in to make us believers? Now you claim that people get married for sex and not for the right reasons, now normally i stay away from these religious articles but today i find myself reading this on, I honestly think that when you tell yourself who is worthy of your love or choose someone in your church because they are conveniently present you are setting up the marriage for more trouble that your unequally yoked.
Just remember we are all guilty of sin and Jesus was sent to save sinners, so stop judging the person you wrote this article to.

    • Anonymous
      June 2, 2011

Its not a matter of choosing somebody from your church, marriage is already hard enough as it is, living with somebody who have tottaly different values from you, only makes things harder than they should be. and an unbeliever is a nonchristian. when you have children with parents who have two different valuse, what are you going to teach them, it make things confusing for them. instead of following the ways of the world, read your bible for yourself and ask God to give you some clarity on the matter.

Way to be judgemental there Pastor Rawles!! How can you just automatically assume that people are marrying for sex?

What if the man doesn’t subscribe to Christianity yet he is hard-working, honest, caring and ambitious and the woman fell in love with these admirable qualities?

And let’s be honest here what exactly is a ‘believer’ or a ‘Christian?’ Someone who will go to church every Sunday? I think we all know by now that many so-called ‘Christians’ are total hypocrites; they attend services all the time yet they are carrying on with affairs, carrying out fraud at work etc ..
