Doomsday preacher, Harold Camping, dies at 92

Camping predicted the end of the world many times
Camping predicted the end of the world many times

A US preacher, who used his radio network and thousands of billboards to broadcast the end of the world, is dead.

Harold Camping was 92 at the time of his death.

Family Radio Network, a Christian media company Camping co-founded, released a statement about his death Monday.

“On Saturday, November 30th, Mr. Camping sustained a fall in his home, and he was not able to recover from his injuries. He passed away peacefully in his home, with his family at his side,” the statement read.

Camping gained worldwide attention when he predicted the end of the world would occur on May 2011.

But the event never unfolded.

The prediction led his followers to sell their possessions in anticipation of the world’s impending end.

Following the failed prediction, Camping said he was flabbergasted and blamed a mathematical error.

He then gave a new date, October 2011, but the world never ended as predicted.

After the second failure, Camping announced “an end to all doomsday predictions.”

It is reported that donations to Camping dropped by 70 percent after his failed predictions. It is unclear how Family Radio Network will be run following the evangelist’s death.

Judgement belongs to God and God alone. Are you all commentators better by any means than this man? How we stand before God, only God knows. Someone could turn to Jesus in the very last stage of his/her life if time and health permits. Know one knows the man’s standing with his maker. God is no joke, and we should not mock or make light of a person’s death. Eternity is a serious matter. May the Lord have mercy on his soul.

The end of the World we come and gone, no such thing end of the World, I have been fooled by that many times growing up as a child they made us believed that 2000 would’ve been end of the World, now I have my own prediction, we come and gone.

Various men (and some women) like Camping have come and gone. Some have started organizations that have survived them. In spite of their failed prophecies there are still those who believe in them and carry on their work.

In recent years a new type of cult has appeared on the religious scene. The new cult is not built around a false belief system so much as around a “charismatic” personality. Often he/she appears sound in the beginning but gradually introduces new and unscriptural teachings.

I invite you to visit my ministry website http://www.livinghopeministies.ca

Good Riddance to you sir. Hopefully you have a good answer for the almighty for the reasons why you played god during your time on earth always foretelling of the thine and hours that only he knows. My regards to St. Peter and the rest “If” you are fortunate enough to see them in the land of milk and honey. However, should you be dammed eternally say hello to no one on my behalf in the bottomless pit. But Change Must Come here on earth and that will be soon..

I just hope he had time to ask God forgiveness before he died. Because if he led millions in deception and did not ask God for forgiveness, he sure will face the wrath of God on judgement day.

We have to die, so the best thing we, who are on this earth have to do is to live, love, laugh and obey the Lord God Almighty. If we were all that, how comes when we die, we don’t take anything with us. That should teach us a good lesson. We do not own ourselves, and without God, we are nothing.

In the world and especially in Dominica, we have a lot of deceptive preachers, priest, who use the pulpit, not for the love of God, but for their own selfish gains. But all I know, they will be just like Harold, die like a fool. I think Harold meant well, but he become like Satan, making fame go through their head, and start acting like God.

We must read the scriptures for ourselves, with Gods guidance, and we will not be like a Ship without a roader, on the wild and stormy seas. Love!

Your world comes to an end when you die. All of us living on earth will face that someday, but only God knows when he will call you and me away from this world.

So we can tell the gentleman R.I.P. He had a long life, many of us will not reach his age. He is gone today, one of us living in any part of the world will be gone tomorrow, that we know for sure because everyday someone dies and their world comes to an end.

Can we ever forget Jim Jones of the Guyana mascara when he got hundreds of people to follow him blindly and then gave them all poison? Be weary of false prophets with false promises and not be too ready to follow them.

Mr. Camping was a bit too old to be going through any kind of a pause.

Now he has come to a complere stop.

When a religious leader is trying to draw together a following to start a cult he has to either (1) create a message or teaching that is different, something no other group has. This sets them apart. Anybody who wants the new revelation must come to them for it, OR (b) he gets his congregation to take a stand against some evil (actual or perceived) in the world that no other organization is taking. Some cults have done both. This tends to attract people who have a chip on their shouilders against the mainline churches, or have left an established church with bad feelings. The unique mindset keeps people in the group by leaving them no place else to go. It also stops them from attending the activities of any other religious group, or dividing their financial support with their another church or ministry.

Mr. Camping chose to use Bible prophecy as his drawng card by giving it a precular twist: he included a date for the Lord`s return. Usually these men have plan B – a back up plan – in case the date fails. It seems Mr. Camping was not new at date setting. It just took his followers a while to catch on.

Most cults now that are into Bible prophecy wait until they are older and better established before they set a date for the end. They have learned from others who suffered setbacks by seting a date too soon.

People have told me they have received help from reading my article IS IT A CULT. It has been published in ten newspapers or magaines in Canada. You can find it on our website

      Go to ARTICLES.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

  17. December 17, 2013

It seems Mr. Camping actually believed his predictions. One reason I say this is because he knew he had so much to lose if they failed.

The dates he set were based upon his own application of mathmatics to certain numerical statements in the Bible. Obviously it is possible to be ever so sincere and yet be wrong. This is why cult leaders are so convincing. Satan helps them believe his lies and come across as sincere. They quote scriptures out of context and appeal to people who have only a surface knowledge of the Word of God.

Many people have been deceived by false prophets and cult leaders because they seemed to be sincere. This happens when people do not know the Word of God. The sad thing is so many victims of such deception continue in the way of error following a cult instead of running from it even after it makes predictions that fail. This is because they follow a personality instead of the
the clear teachings of the Holy Scriptures and are deceived by sensationalism.

We can trust our Bible and only our Bible. It says Christ will return after this present age
to take those who believe in Him – those who have received Him as their Savior and been “born again” – to be with Himself. (St. John 14:1-3) (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18) This is NOT the end of the world (planet earth). It is the end of the AGE: this present order or system of things.

The Bible does not tell us when this age will end and Christ will some. No year, month, day, nor hour are given to us in the Word of God. There is a reason for this. God wants us to prepare now for His coming. He wants us to live every day as if it could happen to-day.

Because Mr. Camping identified himself as an evangelical his unscriptural errors brought reproach upon evangelicals everywhere. It should be known that true evangelical Christians did not associate themselves in any way with his doomsday movement. Organizations like his may use part of our name. They may use some of our terminology. But they are not connected in any way with us.

I am sorry but he did not go out in a blaze of glory. If there is anything people can learn from his life and work it may only be this. Base your faith ONLY upon the Word of God! If you do not find something in the Bible do not accept it! Stay away from churches and ministries that add to the Bible or subtract from it! Read Revelation
    22:18,19.

I will not touch this topic with a 6′ pole. Judgement belongs to God. Who am I to Judge another? who knows what will befall them before they depart this life? We should adhere to all the mistakes and weaknesses of others to better our own selves. I have listen to the many songs on the radio station of which he was president – and i tell you the truth; I’d rather listen to these songs a Billion times over, rather than listen to songs/music from WCK and the like. God has the last word. “He rules in the affairs of man.”

I would like to ask The Rev. Donald Hill Why would he believe he is different from Harold Camping. How absurd and ludicrous it is for you to say that you have The real deal while promoting yourself asking people to visit your website.Do you know how egotistic you sound.Your mind set is no different from Harold Camping.

Do you know all Pastors and Evangelical leaders like you believe they have The real deal based on their own interpretation on The Bible The word of God which they all read.It is very frightening when a Pastor says he has the real deal simply by interpreting the Bible based on his understanding. What about other peoples understanding, didn’t the creator give a mind to people so that they can think.Where did you get that authority believing you have the real deal, that authority did not come from God, it is simply because people refuse to be king of their mental kingdom relinquishing it to people like you, there lies your authority that is why you are no different than Harold Camping.

I agree with you Gary. Even in Jesus’ days the people went to the Synagogue to study discuss, discuss not to just listen and do everything the priest or leaders said or told them to do. This is mostly how churches are today. I have stopped going to church, falling asleep in the balcony and then running out to go home. I did that for years. Now, I decided to read bible from cover to cover then I will return to my church to attend Sunday school bible study and discussion groups. I am not saying that Sunday morning service/worship is a waste of time. It is to fellowship and worship together and of course you can learn a few things and have fun singing etc. I think there is more to it than relinquishing all yourself to listening to people’s point of views (before having an understanding of the bible) instead of getting a solid foundation for one’s own self so that people can learn from your own understanding as well; it is a shared thing. I believe that yes we should study and read the Bible or any other book we believe in for ourselves. We will get the understanding and comprehension from God and our brothers and sisters that don’t “Preach us” In Some churches you are not even allowed to question anything. If you do they say you have a bad spirit and the make a big deal and even embarrass you; say they are praying for you. If you can’t read God doesn’t skip over you he deals with everyone of us according to our own capabilities. He made all of us so he knows us better that anyone else.

        Hi Gary!

Thank you for reading my comments and taking time to reply.

It is a joy to hear from you again.

I will try to answer your questions and perhaps add a few comments.

I am different to Harold Camping because:

        (1) I have never set a date for the return of Christ and the end of the world.

        (2) I have not added to the Bible nor subtracted from it.

        (3) My beliefs are NOT my own interpretations. I teach only the beliefs of my church: the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Most of these beliefs are held by evangelical churches around the world. They are mainstream Christianity! If I taught anything different I would would lose my ministerial license.

        (4) I answer to my denominational superiors. It seems Mr. Camping was accountable to no one.

        (5) I am not trying to draw attention to myself. I am doing what God called me to do; preach and teach the Word of God. There are thousand of us world wide. My priority to to bring lost men and women to Christ. Teaching Bible prophecy is a small but important part of the total ministry.

        (6) We are preaching and teaching the Word of God because Christ Himself commanded us to. This is the commission He gave His church. Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:18-20, 2 Timothy 4:1-5. As a trained and duly ordained minister of the church I share that responsibility with thousands of other preachers world wide. Many of them are doing a better job than I am. But we do our best and pray for each other.

        (7) Unlike Mr. Camping my Bible prophecy teaching is accepted by churches and Bible Colleges in many countries. I have presented the Bible Prophecy Conference in churches in Canada and the USA. It has been featured in Bible Colleges on both sides of the border. It is not unusual to have people with their doctorates, Th.D.s and Ph.D.s sitting in the congregation. These knowledgeable people are there to support me, not challenge me.

        A few more thoughts:

        (a) Yes, I invite people to visit my website. I encourage them to read my books, listen to my CDs, and watch my DVDs. Other evangelists do the same. It is the way we communicate. Websites, books, CDs, and DVDs are what we call “tools” for evangelism. It is how we give people the gospel (the good news of salvation) and provide Bible teaching for people around the world. There is one thing that makes our website different from most. We are not selling anything except one book (THE EAGLE COURSE) and although it can be ordered from our office for $19.99 CA, it can also be studied from the screen or copied absolutely free.

        (b) And yes, what we have is indeed “the real deal” because it is based solidly upon the Word of God! Come on Gary, be fair with me. Did I say I am the only one with “the real deal”? Of course not! It would be a sad thing if my little ministry was the only organization that is taking Christ and His gospel to the world. I thank God for all the others.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

How do we know you information is true and real and you are not correct i f you got that information from the bible why write you own book to explain it…Just teach it straight from the bible give the scripture verses etc! anything other than that may be like Mr Camping …nothing but his own ideas

The term “world” in the Bible refers to “mankind” and the system of existence which was implemented by man himself.

And so the “world” to Jesus are those who did not accept the Life which He brought to them John 3: 16, but they chose to remain conformed to the practice of evil, wickedness, and shamefulness–all of those practices only brings eternal death–the final death of the soul of man, who chose not to accept the Life of Love in Jesus Christ.

The prediction led his followers to sell their possessions in anticipation of the world’s impending end–news article Well how much more “foolish” can people be what did they expect to do with the money which they would receive for the sale of their possession–according to their beliefs of the end of the world?

But it is factual that the end of evil, wickedness, shamefulness, abomination, and all sorts of unrighteousness will come to an end–for the world and its system of existence is passing away. Man must enter the process of mind renewal, of which the effect is transformation to become lost from the control of the “carnal mind” and to be found in control of the “Mind of Love” in Spirit and in Truth

Jesus did not tell us when the happening of the end of time would come into intense effect, but He gave us the signs to look for through His disciples, as He told them at Luke 17: for example:

“26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

In other words people of the days of Noah were living an existence of which God was left out of their attitude and conducts–they had no reverence towards Him–they were conformed to their existence of the flesh, but Jesus has warned us that the flesh and its demands profits nothing!

So are they today, who is conformed to the worldly system-not taking heed that the God of heaven desires that they come to know Him, through faith in His Person, who is Jesus Christ, and doing what is good, acceptable, and perfect, to give Him delight–woe unto those who remain part of the world upon His return, through Jesus Christ.

People of Dominica, the time of Salvation is now; while you still exist in the body–there is no privilege of Life on the other side of the grave.

Wow, so you are an expert in linguistics. Why do give your interpretation of something based on your religious belief to thinking you are right, only fanatics do that.

You mention salvation in closing your comment.I will tell you this the only salvation mankind need right now on this Earth is knowledge. It is a cardinal sin for humans not to seek knowledge, it is the only thing that is going to free us from all the nonsense that is going on in this world.People need to know about Religion and it roots.People need to know about the divine principle called God. People need to know their true self.People need to know about Governments, People need to know about that sorcery thing called The Law,People need to know about Money,People should know the importance of health.People should take control of their mental kingdom.People need to know what leadership is and not be lead like sheep. These are just some of the things that affect us on a daily basis.

Quoting words from a Bible is not going to save us.We live in a world where deception and lies are prevalent on a daily basis aided by the Media,Religious Authorities,Political Leaders and Institutions of learning this is the machinery that keeps us in perpetual ignorance. We live in a world without understanding how it is Governed by trusting Institutions. It is time to understand we are a manifestation and expression of the divine and it’s essence is in us.Why are we suppressing that essence of the divine that is in us.

      • Francisco Telemaque

“knowledge. It is a cardinal sin for humans not to seek knowledge, “(Gary).

Gray, I could have given one of my huge laughter and leave it at that; or simply quote King Solomon by stating ” vanities of vanity,” you however would still not understand the meaning of that. If said, knowledge is power and wisdom is strength, you may still not understand what I mean.

So, let me take you into the book of 2 Timothy 2:15, where the word of God said ” Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

        Clarification:

Let me say there are lots of people, preachers who like to create the impression that they are an authority on God words, and knows the word of God better than the rest. However if we study the word of God, and understand it in the Spiritual sense, when they read or hear people talking rubbish, and out of context with the word of God we will simply ignore the crap these people speak.

Because we have studied and knows the truth, if what they say is true there shall be no confusion, because God also said in his words ” God is not the author of confusion. I am not saying this to put you down, however reading the contents of what you wrote, has very little or absolutely nothing to do with the word of God, you seems tied up within yourself.

Never buy a book anybody write about God, and his word; if you do you do you will only buy a whole pile of confusion. Anything God wants someone to know about him is in the Bible, anything God wants for your, and my life it is already stated in the Bible; therefore though we are instructed to assemble ourselves in fellowship and worship, we still have to be careful with what some of these people preach from their pulpit, for indeed some of these preachers are messengers of the devil and not of God.

Now in your case you are not into the word of God, you are into deductive reasoning, yours is the philosophy of man, and the system of the world, you will never become knowledgeable of the word as long as you maintain your present logic, and rhetoric, you are depending on your natural sense to figure everything out, as such you are in a loosing battle.

No one alive or dead were ever able to completely understand the Bible based on there own intellectualism, it does not happen that way! and so I introduce you to this part of scripture where Solomon states ” Fear God keep his commandments, for that is the duty of man.” this may not be a direct quote, but look it up to find the truth.

Finally, let me tell you only the word of God matters, none other, for in Psalm 111:10 we read ” The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

  19. Francisco Telemaque

Let us say the world will be a better place without such false preachers!

Jesus said only the Father “Jehovah” knows the time of his coming; so anyone who believed that man, and sold their belonging believing the world as we know was going to end is a fool.

I know of one ignorant Dominican residing in Canada, who believed that man, and claimed he was right, she then said ( god ) gave him a message but he messed it up! Anybody who believe that is not in their right frame of mind, they are crazy.

Note: where I wrote “god” in lower case letters; that is deliberate, since I do not believe that man was actually preaching the word of God, but in fact serving a lessor “god” if he was able to calculate the time of the return Jesus who is God; then the dead man might be a god himself.

So the man could predict the end of the world and he couldn’t predict that he was going to fall and die on that day?

  21. Dunstan St. Luce
    December 17, 2013

In light of the plain teachings of Scripture, some men have made false assertions about the coming of the LORD Jesus Christ. Though the imminence of Christ return is taught; meaning that He may appear at anytime, no one knows the precise date of His coming. This is not left for us to know. We are exhorted to live holy lives and to be conscious that he may come in our life time. When we blunder in light of the plain teaching of Scripture we give the enemy a field day.

    • December 19, 2013

      Dunstan St. Luce:

Thank you for your clear well written comments.

Many people were deceived by Mr. Camping’s predictions. However the “many” are still only a small minority. Personally I don’t know anybody who followed him.

The comments on DNO show that he had few if any disciples in the Caribbean. Many of the commentators bad mouthed Camping not because they knew their Bibles too well to be deceived, but because they resented anybody reminding them that a judgment day is coming.

You referred to the Word of God as your authority and were able to articulate your argument. I expect this is because you study the Word and let the Holy Spirit teach you.

Many more people would have been swept away by Camping if it were not for qualified teachers of Bible Prophecy who are sharing the truth about end time events. They are not teaching their own interpretations. How do I know? (1) Because there are many such teachers. Except for the details they are all saying basically the same things. (2) Their fundamental teachings are believed by
the majority of evangelical Christians throughout the world who take the Bible seriously and are watching for their Savior’s return. (3) These doctrines have been held by the Christian church for 2,000 years.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.
