Roseau Cathedral renovation project marches on; more funds needed

Lot 3 on the Roseau Cathedral renovation project, which costs about $1.3-million is said to be  nearing completion and the Bishop of the Diocese of Roseau,, Gabriel Malzaire is soliciting assistance from the public in financing Lot 4 which slated to cost some $2-million.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday morning, Bishop Malzaire said just over half of the funds needed for the entire project have been raised so far.

“To date the diocese has raised a total of $4.3-million towards this project, a project which is approximately $8 million,” he said. “So we have just passed the half way mark in terms of fund raising.”

The bishop mentioned that to date the diocese has spent $2.3-million and it has committed itself to $1.3 million for Lot 3 and has a balance of about $669,000 to move on to Lot 4.

He said Lot 4 will involve the ordering of the steel materials to build the roof and the roofing materials which we will need about $2 -million to complete.

“So as you can see that we have some ways to go in terms of fund raising,” Bishop Malzaire noted. “So part of the reason for this presentation also is to help us understand that our fundraising process is not complete. So I am encouraging those who will be hearing the news, or those who will be hearing this presentation, to be aware, we still have some ways to go in terms of our fundraising efforts.”

When asked whether the Government has contributed to the project he responded that it has not but the diocese is hoping that this will come sometime soon.

He also mentioned that Rome has contributed to the ongoing project as well.

Meanwhile Managing Director of Jars Sales and Services, the company contracted to complete the present phase of the construction, Steve Astaphan said they are about 75 percent of foundation works of the projects has been completed..

“Generally what have been done so far is that we have demolished the chamber room frame that was remaining …there are arches that have to be taken down, that have to be demolished,” he said. “And then you have to recommence doing the foundation work, in order to get these arches and the structural frame, the concrete structural frame done to construct the new roof.”

hope that the church has engaged the skills of a historic preservation specialist or is in constant dialogue with lennox Honeychurch to make sure that we do not loose any of the structures historic significance.

Call the Vatican to get the funds you need. Ask for the Vatican official that was trying to smuggle 20 million euros into Italy from Switzerland. The number is 1-800-VATICAN.

No one asked you for advice. If you cannot say something nice, keep quiet. Hold your tongue, mind and fingers. The Lord said, “By your words you will be acquitted and by your words you will be condemned.” One day some of you will pay for your unkind words. Your day is coming.

Bishop the money you took from the Diocese to send ‘Jane Doe’ to Trinidad for the so-called therapy you should have put it towards the funds for the Cathedral. Please be reminded that a month has since passed and you owe the people of South City and other Dominicans an answer, may it be a lie as usual or other wise. Have a little more respect for people as a leader and do the honourable thing and send Msgr. La Fleur back to South City. Only then you will be able to get more funds for the Cathedral.

For one who is a Catholic, saying ‘concerned’, how concerned are you? There is a loving manner to make such a statement. If you are a concerned Catholic, you would not make such a statement and not on a Website.

What have you done for the Catholic Church? Most of all what have you done for God? What have you done for your country?
Some of you are too quick to roll your tongue and put your fingers to the keyboard and nothing constructive and enlightenment comes out of your statements. Some Catholic you are. God has taken a note of what you stated. You sound like a traitor to your Church.

The Church has taken so much away from the poor, why can’t it give back something for once. Ask pope Francis.

Do you really know what you are talking about? How much do the poor give to the Church? If you go to Church, when collection time comes around, keep watch of how much they put in the collection basket.

the catholic church was built from slave labour, now they are asking the decendants of those ill treated slaves to payup to continue their legacy.

i dont think god will judge us wrongly for a church who was involved in countless atrocities throughout its history.. black people or most of them are still slaves, they dont read and erducate themselves as to our history..

i guess you to must free up you mind.

Is that all you want people to do? Yet you all don’t help members of the church under no circumstances? Man stop ask poor people and turn to the Vatican. They can cover the cost with little effort because their collection is pretty much higher than what we give.
so damn long allu collecting money for that roof renovation, it can’t be completed yet??

Ask yourself, can you raise a few million dollars? Where in Dominica the Church can get it from? How much does the congregation give on a weekly basis? The congregation gets much more from the Church spiritually than the Church gets from them. Therefore, watch your ungodly language.

Why are Dominicans so ignorant. All they say is go beg the Vatican, but they don’t realise that the church is an organization and every organization must be able to stand on its own feet(meaning support themselves)so they cannot just beg the Vatican everytime. As the bishop said the Vatican has helped. Its like any organization such as the local rotary club which have fund raisers to help there cause because they cannot go and beg for money everytime from there head office, they must be able to sustain themselves or it doesn’t make sense.

I reside in Canada. Annually, on a specific Sunday the almsgiving collected is sent to the Pope. I am not using the name Vatican as some do. This money from other Churches is sent to several countries. The Catholic Church helps more people worldwide than any of their warped, limited minds could ever fathom. One day God will punish them for the evil they state; always bashing the Catholic Church. They will find out on that day and pay the price.

So John, the church in Roseau is not part of the Vatican? When it comes to blind obedience they are but when money is needed they must fend for themselves? That church is the least democratic organisation I know. Let the bishop sell his gold first because he surely can not eat it or take it with him to heaven.

so why is the vatican seating on all those billions, to build an army of popes or to pay for their salvation?…
god dont know money, so they should spend it on disaster victims and renovate their churches..

how much money have you ever heard was giving to victims of disasters by the vatican..

But I find my children now a days rude eh! If all you doe give the money,…see if I’ll bury all you in my cemetery! I’m not happy that you guys are hiding behind your computer at home and having all sort of negative things to say about our church. Why when you are in church you say nothing and when you’re out there you have so much to say? I know who you’re, and you’ll not receive communion next time you come to church.
