Remaining four Caribbean islands urged to follow the one-China policy; however, St Kitts & Nevis in favour of Taiwan

Honduras Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina Garcia, left, and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang shake hands following the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries

Following China’s establishment of diplomatic ties with yet another country, a forceful plea has been issued to the remaining four Caribbean countries that recognise Taiwan’s government—Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines—to adopt the One China policy.

The call came from Director-General Cai Wei of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Department of South American and Caribbean Affairs, who spoke to Caribbean journalists after Honduras established diplomatic ties with China after breaking off relations with Taiwan.

According to Wei, there are a multiplicity of benefits that Caribbean nations can derive from having diplomatic relations with China such as infrastructure development, greater support to its human resource capacity, and overall steady progress of the region to name a few.

He cited Dominica, Antigua, Grenada, and Jamaica as countries that have profited from China’s ally status in recent years.

Notwithstanding the strong appeal, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis demonstrated its commitment and continued solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) by moving a resolution in support of Taiwan’s inclusion on the international stage just last week, at the Tuesday, April 4, 2023, sitting of the National Assembly.

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, moved the Resolution of the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis to Endorse the Bid of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Participate Internationally in Various Organizations, which was seconded by the Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Mark Brantley.

The resolution reads: “WHEREAS the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis, being a member of the interparliamentary platform, Formosa Club, in the Caribbean, treasures the diplomatic ties between the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis and Republic of China on Taiwan, and recognizes that the profound friendship between our two countries has grown stronger over the years based on shared values, the respect for the rule of law, democracy and human rights AND WHEREAS the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis values Republic of China on Taiwan as a major contributor in international public health while its healthcare system has earned a global reputation and has been our dedicated partner in public health, as well as in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic AND WHEREAS the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis recognizes Republic of China on Taiwan’s efforts and contributions to renewable energy and to the objective of net-zero emissions by 2050, as well as Taiwan’s willingness to share mitigation and adaptation projects to climate change, and to enhance early warning systems for disaster prevention AND WHEREAS the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis treasures Republic of China on Taiwan’s contributions to combating transnational crime and calls for Taiwan’s appropriate inclusion and meaningful participation in meetings, mechanisms, and activities related to the fight against transnational crime and terrorism so as to create a seamless security network and together uphold global justice AND WHEREAS the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis acknowledges Republic of China on Taiwan’s importance in the development and governance of international civil aviation, and the indispensability of its inclusion in cooperation mechanisms in order to safeguard global aviation safety and reconnect the world in the post-pandemic recovery BE IT RESOLVED THEREFORE THAT the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis endorses Republic of China on Taiwan’s bids to participate in a professional, pragmatic, and constructive manner in international and regional mechanisms and organizations, such as the United Nations (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Criminal Police International Organization (INTERPOL) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).”

Irrespective of the strong support of the neighbouring Caribbean island for the Taiwan government, Honduras’ recent development of diplomatic links with China means that Taiwan is now recognised by only 13 sovereign states.

China’s diplomatic gain with the Central American country comes as tensions between Beijing and the United States build, especially over China’s rising attitude towards self-ruled Taiwan, and reflects expanding Chinese influence in Latin America.

Since their civil war split in 1949, China and Taiwan have been fighting for diplomatic recognition, with Beijing spending billions to gain recognition for its “One China” policy.

According to China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang, the formation of ties demonstrated that the “One China” policy is gaining people’s hearts and is “the general trend.” “We inform sternly the Taiwan authorities that engaging in separatist activities for Taiwan independence is against the will and interests of the Chinese nation and against the trend of history, and is doomed to a dead end,” he said.

The Honduran Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Twitter that its government recognizes “only one China in the world” and that Beijing is the only legitimate government that represents all of China.”

It added that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and as of today, the Honduran government has informed Taiwan of the severance of diplomatic relations, pledging not to have any official relationship or contact with Taiwan.”

Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told a news conference that Taiwan had ended its relations with Honduras to “safeguard its sovereignty and dignity.” Wu said that Honduran President Xiomara Castro and her team always had a “fantasy” about China and had raised the issue of switching ties before the presidential election in Honduras in 2021. Relations between Taiwan and Honduras were once stable, he said, but China had not stopped luring Honduras.

Honduras is the ninth diplomatic ally that Taipei has lost to Beijing since the pro-independence Tsai first took office in May 2016.

Despite China’s campaign of isolation, Taiwan retains robust informal ties with more than 100 other countries, most importantly the United States which doesn’t have diplomatic relations with Taiwan but has maintained that Taipei is an important partner in the Indo-Pacific.

As a citizen of an independent nation which has its foundation in slavery, we should throw our support with the decision of the people of Taiwan, who apparently doesn’t want Chinese rule. In my opinion this is the most important aspect of this, the opinion of the people of Taiwan, China can want what china wants but only a purple can decide their faith and if these people wants independence why should we support them being a colony when our ancestors died for independence especially seeing how small we are. So would we agree for China to make us into a colony if its China will? What about our will?

We live in a complicated and twisted world. Chinese are illegally flocking to the US to live the elusive American dream.

Americans are lambasting the “brutal and repressive” Chinese government but are China’s biggest consumers. In the meantime China is purchasing swaths of American land and other real estate assets.

Countries that are partnering with China to shed the imperialistic and economically crippling cloak of the US and the West and its pariah agencies like the IMF and World banks will soon find out that the Chinese ain’t no saints themselves.

China will call in their debt in a Bejing second and will seize their “charitable” infrastructure across the globe in a New York minute, making it clear to all that there is no such thing as a free meal!!!

Makes sense, but seize charitable infrastructure? I do hope by now these little Westminister style politicians can negotiate their way thru any biased MOU for a grant. Are the Chinese so-called Indian givers?

Good comment for thought. Some people look at geo politics with a veil over their head, history is a good teacher. China is a boggeyman created by Western powers, through the media, I’m not implying China is a Saint. People are ignorant of their history regarding China, and forgot what that Country was 50 years ago. Let us leave
the judgement of China for history not in
the comments of people ignorant of geo policts and Chines history.

You are painting China as contemporary utopia. If this were even remotely true, why is no migrants are seeking a better life there?

This is a place where you are put before a firing squad for practising the religion of your choice. Even the most innocuous criticism about the government can land you in jail for life. As a Black man you are prohibited from opening a bank account. In certain parts of China, poverty is beyond compare to the rest of the world.

You are just embarrassed, so your are including your nonsensicalities to save face.Obviously they are of no moment, and make you look supremely stupid, because you are deviating from the topic. The USA which is a democracy has killed more people, bully more nations and overthrown more governments than any other country on planet earth. That’s their foreign policy.

These countries which chose Taiwan over China have chosen:
    *Good over Evil
    *Democracy over Totalitarianism
    * Morality over Sin
    *Humanity over Mercilessness

Those who advance the notion that China is the better option are selling their souls. Not everything is for sale. Despite the overwhelming decadence that has engulfed this planet, there is still a place for decency and rightness.

The destruction of a democracy? What about the two systems one people? This is the crap that cause wars and destruction. China does not allow outside influence so to know who china is and what they about go read thier history. Kudos to st Kitts at least there are black leaders who would not bend over to those people who only seek to intimidate and spread thier imperialism. One china policy is both egocentric and ethnocentric and highly imperialistic. Furthermore we should not be interfering in others politics. How about a one black policy exclude every dang chinese from africa and lets unit by force all black people in the world. The one african policy.

Go read the history of China you will find out how Taiwan developed, who are the Taiwanese and why mainland China specifically the Chinese communist party is hell bent on eradicating thier political independence. To the outside world it is a one china policy loosely used in the narrative. What we need to ask is what is the one china policy. Certainly no country should be setting ties on a slogan without the root understanding. Taiwan is a democracy that has been flourishing, sprung out form nationalist from the mainland who despised communism. Essentially china is using money to gain consensus to kill democracy and usher in thier hybrid governance system that is becoming more imperialist. There is a reason for the state control. It is thier ideology of stability which had alluded them through thier well documented history of internal strife. Rise and fall of empires and dynasties. That beast has now escaped its borders.

China is not killing Democracy…..Democracy is not the only governance style. So China does not want to be dictated too, and i agree with them. Who has made America the world’s God, and every other island/country its disciples? Who is America with roughly 4% off the world’s populaton to dictate to China with about 18% off the world’s population? Is America the world’s largest Democracy? NO! So it’s out of place to want to alter China’s governance style . I fully agree with China to pay no attention to the America and the other Westerners, and to RUN THEM AWAY! Trying to spread Democravy has destroyed many countries; Iraq, Lybia, Syria, etc, etc, etc,. Who ever thought that the people in Iraq would be asking for a return of the days of Saddam Hussain, because they are saying that things were better.

You are admitting here that China is to counter America and using Dominica. Why don’t you move to China and enjoy what you so admire buy a piece of land and enjoy the life. You are lucky you are able to be on this media to freely express yourself. Maybe you are one of those Chinese communist propagandists using the free press we enjoy to come and spread your admiration. America aint no saint and its dirty laundry is free for the world to see and its amazing that the president of China was on a pig farm in midwest US to come learn the capitalist ways. To understand where we are one has to look at historical context where we came from. Do you know China and US were allies during WW II while they were under occupation by mighty Japan.

( ultimate indication of human destructive capabilities). Are you aware that today japan and US are strong allies with japan being a democracy with top 5 largest economy in world along with South korea another Allied? While Hong Kong was flourishing economically under British china communist party had serious poverty because thier method of resource distribution AKA communism proved to be a failure and the only way to maintain status quo is government control. Worst than imperialism. Do you know the US sprung from the demons of imperialism and has fought to ensure man has freedom to do what you doing now.
