Resurfacing of Roseau streets not part of Roseau Enhancement Project – PM Skerrit

A resurfaced Kennedy Avenue

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has made it clear that the resurfacing of selected roads which was done in the city of Roseau, is not part of the ‘Roseau Enhancement Project’.

He said this is “routine road maintenance” that is done from time to time.

The streets included Kennedy Avenue, Independence Street and King George V Street

“Instead of patching the road, this week you patch, next week you have to patch again, I gave the direction to just resurface the streets so it gives you a few months reprieve from having to do any surfacing,” he said in a radio address this week.

The prime minister revealed that the ‘Roseau Enhancement Project’ will continue this year.

“We will start with the Great George Street and very soon we will have an engagement of the business owners and the residents of Great George Street so we can apprise them of the scheduling of this project,” he stated.

Skerrit said that once Great George Street is completed, Independence Street and King George V Street will be improved.

Meantime, according to Chief of Police, Daniel Carbon, the police plan to take measures to alleviate the traffic congestion in the city of Roseau.

He said at a press conference recently that they will be moving very quickly to ensure that parking will be permitted on one side of the street in certain areas.

“Hillsborough Street is a very narrow street and cannot accommodate parking on both sides of the street and so we will be demarcating one side of that street only for parking and the other side will be for no parking,” Carbon said.

He said ‘keep clear’ signs will be added on the entire southern entire side of Hillsborough Street and measures will also be taken on Hanover Street and King George V Street to ensure that traffic congestion is reduced.

Seems dominican leadership is cursed with poor planning and execution. Why resurface the roads and in a few months to have to dig them up again for ROseau Enhancement? My fear is that 5 years from now, this resurfacing IS gonna be the enhancement, since DLP has not been able to deliver on their empty promise when they drew up these fancy pictures more than 5 years ago. Dominica needs some serious project planners, city/town planners and urban designers so the government can coordinate their mess. Things are just done so haphazardly!

lf Madame Skerrit didnt have a band on the road the streets would only get the usual patch work.

jamie why can’t u say something nice? You seem very disgruntled that u keep cursing the country left, right & centre, You need to look within to see what is making you so mean. Do this quickly my dear. I have never seen you comment nicely just negative. This is not good for you. Are you here or repeating what u hear others say? Maybe not. You need a trip down here to see for yourself. Dominica is moving forward nicely & I do not say it political but just love of my country. No matter you & the other naysayers, Dominica is moving on at an alarming speed. Imagine we are the St. Maarten, Antigua, Curacoa, Aruba, St Martin, Guadeloupe, United Kingdom, USA, St Thomas (Tomians with Digger boots), St Croix of the sixties and 70’s when our people went over to work & sent back to Dominica Pounds, US$’s, for those at home families, friends. We must never forget but maybe u too young so ask the older folks. Stop this now jamie. Love & appreciate what God has done 4 us.

Well I wish he would focus on Valley Road. Have you seen the sidewalks and drains on this very important road? Not only is it a priority for our citizens but also the visitors.
The tourist come up from the ship to visit the gardens and this is what they have to deal with. No place to walk to visit the botanic gardens. Valley Road is also the road leading to the wonders and the many attraction sites (the falls, lakes, spas, titou gorge etc) that we boast about every day.
    I just continue to smh.

He said this is “routine road maintenance” that is done from time to time. I honestly cant remember the last time roseau got a resurfaced road. Before election they did high street and victoria road. But that was about i. year in year out public works picks and chooses which pot hole they want to fill and which they dont. Sometimes they are side by side. I pay road maintenance taxes. I am not sitisfied by how they are being “maintaned”. While the new surface is welcomed, this is poor poor work. all the manholes are covered with asphalt. That alone is a recipe for disaster when we actually to ned to go into them. There is a rise and drop in the old and new asphalt, The clearance fron road and sidewalk along kennedy ave is less now, which may cause easier flooding to some places, espeically around prevost cinemall. in dominica we does just do things. and we the people just have to accept it. make noise/ dont make noise, “so it is”.

I think the drains and side walk should have been given priority. The road in the town is not that bad compared to the drains and side walk..

Wouldn’t it be foolish for a man to know the foundation of his house is bad and has taken a decision to demolish the house and rebuild, but somehow because friends will be visiting he decides to put a new roof and paint the house just to impress his friends? Well that’s exactly what Skerrit did. He knows how to make things look good on surface when in fact things are very bad inside

So Skerrit is now Pubic works minister and parlrep of Roseau Central eh? Anyways in as much as the face lift looks good, yet it is nothing more than dumping money because you could tell there is not a plan or blueprint they following. If you talking about Roseau enhancement then resurfacing of a road should be the last thing to be done because enhancement would have to include trenching for new water /sewage, proper drainage, modern sidewalk etc and then we could concentrate on resurfacing. What we saw is yet another step of a cluelessness and a government that just covering faults to impress visitors that would be here for the carnival. It just reminds me of the millions dumped on night landing with no clear vision. Just more deception more lies

” I gave the direction to just resurface the streets”. Why have ministers in the cabinet if they are not allowed to carry out their duties that the people employ them to do? Step aside PM let the ministers do their jobs. Imagine if you were to get sick them ministers’ hand would be tied because the would not know what to do. Thanks for resurfacing the road, it was nice and smooth for the jump up. I am looking forward to what is in store for the “new Roseau”.

Skerrit just gave de directions to resurface the streets….. like he doh have a minister of works!!!
I knew that young man he put as minister of works would pass like a stooge!
Skerrit is micromanaging….I guess he holds de title of director of road maintenance now.
    Skerrit stop fooling your base!
If you say you going to start de road enhancement program soon then why are you wasting our scarce resources!

Conveniently de carnival route appeared to be the roads with the worst surface….in your mind.
De eyes of de foreigners would be on de carnival events along de carnival route…..so you put a plaster on de road even covering manholes to…. boy you smart eh!

    Somebody give Skerrit a lollipop!

Do you know if you cover the drain on Bath road from in front the police station to river street . That’s a lot of parking and I am surprise that no one fall in that drain. what I don’t understand, why when they were building the stadium they paint the big drain instead of covering it.

  15. March 1, 2020

Good job while you at it just cover the drains is that to hard to do?

    March 1, 2020

Just a coincidence that only the carnival routes were done and the week before val as well . And you don’t have a reprise cause you buried all the manhole covers soon you will be digging up the exact same roads to find those covers. If that is what you call routine maintenance why not resurface the pond casse to emerald pool road because that’s where the majority of your tourists go
