Revelers encouraged to use portable latrines during festive season

Robert Tonge

Revelers are being encouraged to use the portable latrines provided in and around the City of Roseau during the festive season and are told to avoid urinating in the “city corners”.

Tourism Minister, Senator Robert Tonge, made the call while delivering an address at the official launching ceremony of Carnival 2019, which was held at the Windsor Park Forecourt last weekend.

“We have added portable toilets. We added many garbage bins. So let us make sure we keep our city clean. Let us make sure our city is not smelling the day after,” he said. “I want to ask many of you especially the men…let us not wet the city corners too much because the following day, it really doesn’t smell too well.”

Tonge also encouraged people to keep the city clean.

Minister for Environment, Climate Resilience, Disaster Management and Urban Renewal, Joseph Isaac, in support of his fellow-minister, stressed the importance of keeping the environment clean.

“We have recently passed an ordinance and a Cabinet decision in which we have banned certain non-biodegradable plastic,” he explained.

Isaac called on the public to remain conscious of that, “and while we are celebrating and enjoying ourselves, we try our best to keep the environment clean and after any activity, we should ensure that we clean up and keep the place clean.”

Irene John

Mayor of the City of Roseau, Irene John, adding her voice to the appeal, encouraged the public to keep Roseau “as clean as possible” during the festive season.

She appealed to all to revel and enjoy all the Carnival celebrations, the ‘Real Mas’ in a spirit of togetherness and concern for each other.

“Let that same energy, enthusiasm and excitement portrayed during the Carnival celebrations,” John stated. “Let it transcend in our efforts to rebuild the Nature Island Dominica into the first climate resilient country in the world.”

She advised people to conduct themselves in a manner which is acceptable to Dominica and to the world.

“Let us not make this Carnival a time for taking revenge, a time for violence, a time for giving back or hitting back,” John urged. “Let us understand that Carnival is our festival. Let us play it clean, let us keep it clean, let us take care of each other, let us be each other’s keeper.”

She encouraged Dominicans to “go out in large numbers and enjoy yourselves and to participate in whatever the Carnival has to offer for us.”

I think revelers should wear one of those free pampers that Skerrit promised to give out to mothers recently, because we know that the portable toilets will not be cleaned, nor maintained. After the meeting with Hartley Henry came out where Mrs. Skerrit will be contesting the Roseau Central Constituency, both Robbie and Isaac were awaken from their slumber. “De moo-moo talking again.”

I am in agreement, long overdue idea. Yet these people spoke like politicians, they missed an opportunity to inform the public on how often these things will be emptied. Prudent frequent monitoring is the only way, and will keep them from becoming a mess. Seriously.

“Let us not wet the city corners too much because the following day, it really doesn’t smell too well.”

Too much? TOO MUCH?! Nobody should be urinating in the ‘city’ corners or any public outside space, fullstop! What kinda nonsense is that

The queen of England has a high born Lady of the Bedchamber . We can now honour the mayor of Roseau with the title of Madam Potcham and Robbie can be the Hon. Guardian of the Piswa. Mind you for carnival only.

Portable toilets are long overdue during carnival season. I hope they have attendants to them too to maintain cleanliness and keep things orderly. Nice start to really making Roseau streets remain clean and sanitary.

The idea is a good one. However, they should make sure that these are well maintained and cleaned. While it may be Ok for the men, it might pose a sanitary risk for females

Great idea also there should be separate ones for ladies so there is no problem with users

The idea is good, but I hope they are very well cleaned and maintained throughout the Carnival season. While it might be Ok for the men, I am thinking about sanitary standards for females.

Carnival itself is vulgar. I want to know which set of slaves after the abolition of slavery in 1833 were celebrating in the streets with just pieces of string and cloth over their private parts.

Carnival should be thrown in some permanent pit latrine where it truly belongs. Phew!!!

Joseph Issac said Robbie is the backup man for Roseau central so we depending on Robbie to have toilets for backup. All you good for is backup.

Urinating in a public place is a disgusting thing to do. Only animals do this. If caught in the act they should be prosecuted and made to pay a heavy fine.

Urinating in a public place should be an offence. If caught in the act a heavy fine should be imposed. It’s a disgusting thing to do.

“She advised persons to conduct themselves in a manner which is acceptable to Dominica and to the world.”

Are you people not tired of making nuisances of yourselves!  You advise people to utilize  the portable toilets as if they are children!

People must defecate, they must urinate, in that case when nature calls outside of one’s home they must look for a place to relieve themselves. In the develop world wherever large crowds assembles toilet facilities are provided to accommodate people!

People are not dumb; the world would not have thought anything about it unless you mentioned it, all of you babbling are like a frightened hen defecating white feces saw it believing it is an egg!

Secondly; latrine is a receptacle such as a pit-hole in the earth used as a toilet. Are you saying that you all dug many pit-holes in the streets to accommodate urine and feces?

Only another example of how far behind the time we are!

    Our backwardness exposed!

Francisco, get a life. We had that same problem in New York in America in the developed world with portable toilets at carnival time. They were a complete mess. So, they are right to advise people to keep the portable toilets clean and to keep the city clean as well. Francisco, find some work to do to keep you occupied, your ……

Let me tell you I don’t need a life, because I have a perfect life, I want of nothing!

At age 47, I retired, since then I have not beg now borrowed form you nor have I ran to any government for help!

Worry about you and how you are going to eat tomorrow, and pay your damn rent: I don’t rent.

What the hell you talking about; we see portable toilets on construction sites all over America, I drive pass them on the sites wherever roads are constructed and  repaired from Los Angeles, to Canada.

Shut up, you do not have any argument; the people in Dominica are just frightened, I said it again, eat your heart out!

If I live for hundred plus years, I  do not have to work ever for the rest of my life, can you say that?

        Shut up, just shut up!
