Rising Tides Dominic launches ‘Safe Waves Swim Camp’, free to the public

Rising Tides Dominica, in collaboration with the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC), Dominica Amateur Swimming Association (DASA), and Soufriere Outdoor Centre, and funded by The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), has announced the launch of Safe Waves Swim Camp 2024. This summer camp, led by certified and experienced Dominican lifeguards, safety trainers, and camp instructors, aims to provide water safety skills and memorable experiences for youth and teens at no cost.

Program Overview

Safe Waves Swim Camp is a fully-funded initiative designed for participants of all swimming abilities, from beginners to those with some experience. The camp’s structured sessions focus on water safety, first aid, and marine stewardship, offering a comprehensive approach to aquatic education and environmental awareness. The camp will run over seven weeks in July and August, featuring three two-week sessions and a week-long inclusivity session. It will be based in Soufriere.

Commitment to Safety and Excellence

The camp is led by certified professionals trained by the Canadian Lifesaving Society, ensuring high-quality instruction and safety. The primary objective is to equip local youth, especially those in coastal communities, with essential swimming, water safety, and emergency response skills while fostering an appreciation for the ocean and its ecosystems.

Camp Features and Highlights

– Certified Instructors and Lifeguards: The camp is led by local professionals with extensive training and certification.
– Comprehensive 2-Week Programs: The program includes swim lessons, first aid classes, and ocean adventures.
– Convenient Transportation: Daily private bus service from Roseau to the Soufriere Outdoor Centre ensures safe and easy access.
– Healthy Refreshments: Daily snacks and refreshments are provided to keep participants energized and hydrated.
– Essential Gear Provided: Participants receive lifejackets, goggles, towels, water bottles, and a first aid kit to take home.
– Engaging Activities: Activities include kayaking lessons, guest speakers on marine conservation, and coral reef restoration projects.

– Session #1: July 1 – July 12, 2024
– Session #2: July 15 – July 26, 2024
– Session #3: July 29 – August 9, 2024
– Session #4: August 12 – August 16, 2024 (for young children under 7 and individuals with disabilities)

Daily Times

– Morning Sessions (Ages 8-12): 8:30 am – 12:30 pm (Monday – Friday)
– Afternoon Sessions (Ages 13-16): 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm (Monday – Friday)

– Experience: Swimming Director at YMCA Camp PineCrest (Canada)
– Qualifications: Certified Water Safety Instructor, Certified Lifesaving Instructor, Certified Lifeguard, Certified Swim Coach, Certified Swim-for-Life Instructor

– Sky Fishleigh
– Experience: Outdoor Educator/Instructor at YMCA Camp PineCrest (Canada)
– Qualifications: Certified Lifesaving Instructor, Certified Lifeguard, Certified Swim-for-Life Instructor, Certified White Water Rescue Technician

Additional local lifeguards, trainers, support staff, and special guest speakers will contribute to a safe and enriching learning experience for all participants.

Inclusion Week for Special Needs

The final session, from August 12 to August 16, is dedicated to very young children and individuals with disabilities. This inclusive session offers tailored support and individualized attention from expert instructors, ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all participants.
