The Rotary Club of Dominica says it has secured the endorsement of the Ministry of Education to hold the 2013 National Quiz Competition for first and second form secondary school students.
The event is to be held during the Rotary International Literacy Month, observed in March.
The elimination process started in January 2013 with the ‘home’ competitions at school level and will be progressing to two zonal competitions which will be held on February 28 and March 01.
The national competition is to be held on March 21, 2013.
The Club said the idea for quiz competition arose out of the need to stimulate active concerns in Dominica among the youth in the areas of Civics and Social Responsibility.
“As such, the competition centres on Social Studies (Geography, History, Government and Civics), but includes Integrated Science, Literacy, ICT and Mathematics. Topics will closely align with the school curriculum and will attempt to inspire and encourage students to read widely, and to develop understanding and critical thinking as they explore the knowledge and concepts in that select group of subjects,” the club said in a release.
Nine secondary schools are participating as follows:
Northern Zone
Castle Bruce Secondary School, North East Comprehensive School, Isaiah Thomas Secondary School and Portsmouth Secondary School.
Southern Zone
Goodwill Secondary School, Pierre Charles Secondary School, Dominica Community High School, St. Martin’s Secondary School and Convent High School.
LIME Dominica is the major sponsor for the event. The Rotary Club said it has also secured support from the private sector.
Last year the Dominica Grammar School was the winning finalist and is the holder of the trophy.
