UPDATE: Burst of earthquakes affects Dominica

The Office of Disaster Management has confirmed a burst of felt earthquake events from about 10.00 pm last night.

An ODM release states that this is all part of small earthquake swarms in the South of Dominica occurring since December 2018.

Few felt events have been reported during that period but there has been an intensification overnight.

According to a report from the UWI Seismic Research Centre, these earthquakes were smaller than magnitude 3.8 which is below the threshold for posting to the SRC’s social media platforms.

“They were all at magnitudes 3.1 to 3.4 at five (5) kilometers deep which is considered shallow. The shallower the earthquake is the more they are felt. This activity is part of an ongoing series of earthquakes in that area which may be described as volcanic unrest,” the release stated.

The ODM further went on to emphasize in their release, “The unrest does NOT necessarily mean that an eruption will occur but as seen in 1998, larger magnitude earthquakes can occur and so the public should remain vigilant,”

From 2000-2004 there was similar volcanic unrest activity (bursts of earthquakes) that did not culminate in an eruption.

The Seismic Research Centre is continuing to monitor the activity and provide the authorities with regular updates.

Good morning, Thankfully there is this early warning system to notify those currently resident on the island. However, would it not be a good idea to remove the copyright note at the end of the post in cases such as this, where as many people as possible need to have this important information?

ADMIN: Point noted. Interestingly this has not stopped people before.

Hello and good evening my people. Well I see there’s another Tony posting but when ever I post I always say Hello,Good morning or evening to my people. I spoke to my two aunts and one uncle who reside in Roseau and in the south and they said they felt the tremors . Please my people make Sure you have an evacuation plan and know where the shelters are just in case. If it’s a big one then I can only pray for you all so stay alert and safe. I heard there were tremors in St Vincent,St Lucia and Tobago.

Interesting. I made a comment asking why the Government had not asked the radio stations to notify the public regarding situation.

My comment was not printed. Why not? Yet a statement of sort appeared.

ADMIN: As far as we can tell your comment was posted. Please check again.

Please be vigilant everyone, remember we are surrounded by volcanoes, and often times, frequent and shallow earthquakes are indications of magma on the move. Also tsunamis are a possibility.

Why are the Government not informing radio stations to notifying the public – in some cases very frightened public – of this?

Well we can make fun of everything while slanting negative remarks.
But the reality is this….WE ARE IN DANGER….that is the warning.
Our real choice is to pray for protection and move closer to the loving power of Jesus. He alone can calm storms even before they start. We are having warnings of earthquake, volcanoes and hurricanes if we wish to continue being had hearted and stuborn so be it. We will feel the wrath of Nature if we do not pray for protection.
Remember the destruction of Port Royal in Jamaica of Mt. Pale in Martinique or Maria (about 3 years ago). So every day ,LET US PRAY and PRAY !
