I would say Dominica has about 40,000 people. Because our population is so low that means our rat of murders is high. It is clear. The crime rate iis on the increase. Some peoplel. Some say that workinh in a nomal job. The salaries are too low and they have to work to hard to get the life style they want. I can make a conjecture our young men are under educated still want high paying jobs.

One way to dull the numbing effect of bad news or bad statistics is to compare with another that is seen as being worst. The fact here is not if Dominica is 1st or 50th, the fact is there are murders in the country which have to be solved, and the murder rate must be addressed, period. Comparing with another country and saying it is not as bad as another does not solve or address the matter at hand. Drugs and violence together, and where and how the first goes, so will the second.
Also it does not matter if one dies by gun, knife, cutlass, etc. A murder is a murder, a death is a death.

This side of the world is struggling with increasing murders. The Caribbean, South and Central America account for about 17 of the top 20 countries with the top murder rates in the world. The West Indies is well represented. The sooner we realize where this is going, the better chance we have to correct it. Making excuses like saying that Dominica’s murders are mostly from cutlasses and knives as opposed to guns is none sense. That sounds like an American excuse…Murder is murder.. We do not want to be on the list of countries with the highest murder rates.

Truth be told, Dominica is still a relatively peaceful country. However, recent trends in gun related murders are becoming concerning. Crime is everybody’s business but government must play a proactive role in severely curtailing it before it gets completely out of hand.
Most profound condolences to the relatives and friends of the departed. Hope the perpetrator(s) is apprehended soonest.

That is so sad and upsetting, especially for his family and friends. How many persons have been unlawfully killed in our country so far this year.

Our police announced on 15 August of this year, as reported by DNO, that there had been 5 murders in Dominica up-to-date that date, of which 3 by shooting. There have been at least 4 more since, all by shooting:
      18 August – Fitzroy Roberts
      25 August – Brian Alexander
      29 August – Curtson Charles
Plus today’s victim Tyrone Jolly. This makes the total of reported homicides in Dominica, so far this year 9.

The problem with Dominica today is the influx of drugs and guns into our communities. The two are linked and investigation into this murder will reveal that.

Inhabited by just about 70,000 permanent residents, Dominica is one the smallest countries in the world but when it comes to the homicide rate, this popular Caribbean holiday destination can “compete” with much larger countries. Even tourists can get robbed or encounter aggressive behavior. Locals are often armed with machetes but these are used for cutting their crops, not killing people, fortunately.

This should not be taken out of context; it is an extrapolation based on a population of 100,000 that does not exist. It is a reasoning that if we have 7 murders in a population of 70,000, then we should expect 10 if our population were 100,000. Human behavior does not operate this way and this statistic has no value for small populations below 100,000.

Warrington, Dominica do not have a population of seventy (70,000.00) thousand people! That imaginary figure might be true sometime in the late 1960’s.

Since then thousands of people has died; the ratio of death in Dominica exceeds the birth rate. It is simply elementary. In addition to the death rate, people are leaving, Dominica every day; week after week, month after month, year after year, so how can there by yet seventy thousand people in the country?

If you wish prove me wrong forget about the last census taken in Dominica, nevertheless if you only count the number of people who voted in the last election, you will find that less than thirty (30,000.00) thousand people voted.

So, if I am correct 70,000.00 – 30,000.00 must equal 40,000.00 people! There is no way forty thousand people could have born in five years, and if that occurred they are less than five years old.

There might be more than a hundred thousand of us alive, but we doh in Dominica eh…

Well Winston my friend you explain that to the mothers and family of those murdered and tell them that because we are only a small country’s those killings don’t have the same value than in big countries. A turd is a turd no matter what country you are in.

Actually, that’s common knowledge. DA is ranked about 52nd in the world with about 8.4 murders per 100K..The US is ranked about 81st with 4.88.

        @Riv

These numbers don’t mean anything. Most murders in the USA are by gun, in Dominica its mostly knife/ cutlass related. Its actually only this year Dominica has had all these gun related murders (about 4/5 this year).

Its a bad trend for the future, as its not expected to get better, but don’t act like its the wild west here, were every dog and cat has a gun.

        Joe,
Sometimes the truth hurts, but that information is a few taps on keyboard away. Don’t blame the messenger.

Here are the World Bank stats for intentional homicides/100,000:

        Dominica 2000 (2.87) 2011 (8.37) a three-fold increase in 11 years. (no data for Dominica for 2016)

        USA 2016: 5.35
        Canada 2016: 1.78

      • Looking
        November 12, 2018

Riv, all statistics must be looked at critically. Especially when we have a country like Syria number 128. If this does not say much well I do not know what will.
