Organizers of Showdown Mas Camp are promising patrons an exciting show with a new twist this Carnival season.
The first show is scheduled for tonight (Friday 13th January) M&G’s Jerk Hut and Bar in Castle Comfort from 8:00pm.
“This year we are doing it in solidarity with our brothers and sisters facing health and other challenges and so on Friday at the opening we have the colour pink,” President of Showdown Mas Camp, Frederica Riley said while addressing a press conference this week to launch its calypso tents for the 2023 Carnival Season.
She continued, “Pink for [Breast] Cancer Awareness and we all know that we are losing our loved ones through this big ‘C’ word, so we just want to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters going through those challenges.”
Furthermore, Riley said that on the 20th of January the next colour used will be blue for prostate cancer.
“We have a lot of men going through that they keep silent and we tend to always keep our sickness silent, yes we have our personal reasons, but we need to understand so that you get support,” she stated. “If you have that love and support from people with prayers you tend to go through that challenge a little better.”
She added, “On the 27th [January] we have orange for domestic violence. We need to speak out and reach out.”
Riley went on to state that on the 3rd of February the colour purple will be used for violence against women and the 10th of February is red and white, “ and on the 16th [February] we will be doing a collider scope of colours and the theme for that night is unity.”
“We want to bring unity to the tent, we want to bring love to the people, because Mas Camp is about love, it’s about unity and the art form,” Riley stated. “And so we have chosen that theme to bring that to the people, but we kind of colourize it so that it can be a little more fun.”
Meantime, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Showdown Mas Camp Johnson Boston said things are in place for a great start tonight.
“Things are in place for the start on Friday and the continuity of the tent until the 16th February, 2023,” he stated.
He mentioned also that every year the organizers do their best to bring out very positive calypsos with the enjoyment of the Dominican public and of course listeners overseas.
“This year we are hoping to present something good,” Boston remarked.
He also called for a “clean” and “peaceful” 2023 Carnival celebrations.
“This year a number of people are looking forward to being on the streets and what we want is to ensure we have a successful, clean and very peaceful Carnival,” Boston encouraged.
A contribution of $20 is required to enter the show.
Can it be seen live for free?
According to Johnson Boston, there is massive unemployment and poverty in Dominica.Mas Camp must be free, seeing that so many people are poor and unemployed.
