Leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, is confident that his party will win by a landslide in the upcoming general election.
He told supporters at a public meeting held in Guadeloupe on the weekend that the only party that has a plan and vision for Dominica is the DLP.
“Labour is winning the elections in Dominica, and we are not only winning, we are winning [by] a landslide in Dominica,” he said. “They cannot test me, they cannot take me out…”
According to Skerrit, the upcoming general election is not about the DLP, it is about the future of Dominica.
He contends that “the only thing the opposition [United WorkersParty] is giving to Dominica is [an] attack on Roosevelt Skerrit” and insists that attacking him will not bring development to Dominica.
“What brings development to a country is vision and hope, and that’s what the Dominica Labour Party is providing to the people of Dominica,” he stated. “So, they can curse Skerrit morning, noon and night but they cannot move Roosevelt Skerrit as the Prime Minister of Dominica.”
Skerrit added that Dominicans know that he has the back of the people of Dominica.
“They know that when there is a disaster they can rely on Roosevelt Skerrit to be there with them and for them,”
The prime minister believes that whenever the opposition attacks him it only makes him stronger.
“They believe that by attacking Roosevelt Skerrit that they will weaken me, but every time they attack me I am getting stronger in Dominica…solid as a rock,” he remarked.
He nonetheless encouraged registered voters living in Guadelupe to come home to vote.
Meantime, the Dominican leader, who has been at the helm of this country for the past 15 years, reiterated his party’s intention to build an international airport for Dominica, “and I will have more to say about this in the next few days.”
He also touted the progress made by the DLP in the area of healthcare.

Skerrit looked like a promising your politician who had brought welcome relief to Dominica following the disastrous rule by the UWP that had left Dominica on its knees, crippled by debt and the onset of austerity. My main concern was that PM Skerrit would have to tackle the lack of law and order in Dominica if he were to become a successful leader. Now after 15 years of leadership it is clear to see how Dominica has fared under PM Skerrit’s leadership, and the judgement is damming: Murders have become an almost everyday occurrence; There is effectively no law and order on the streets; The police are ineffective and useless at solving crime; The good people of Dominica are under threat of attack every day by the wicked who prey upon the those who are hard-working.

The Government may contribute to an investment from a private sector, who wants to do business in Dominica, but they cannot be the employer of all workers thers–or else, where would the revenue for the treasury come from?
The Government is responsible for all civil workers (civil servants); they are responsible for the salary and other payments of all those workers–how is a teacher bringing revenue to the country, for example? I was one of those when I was at home.
I will say that those who are constantly, calling the Government to create jobs, are they who has no vision in Life; so they think that they were born to depend on other people for their survival –especially the Government.

Dominica is the only independent OECS country without an international airport, modern cruise ship facilities, modern sporting facilities and an adequate network of roads and bridges among other necessities. National healthcare, minimum wage, public servant salaries, pensions, all these are national scandals. Corruption, mismanagement, ineptitude, fierce political tribalism has crippled the economic progress of the country.
