Skerrit tells Dominicans in Antigua their vote is needed to re-elect DLP

Screenshot from video of Skerrit addressing DLP rally in Antigua

Prime Minister and political leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Roosevelt Skerrit, has told Dominicans living in Antigua and Barbuda that their vote is essential to the re-election of his party and consequently, the continued development of the country.

He was addressing hundreds of Dominicans living in St John’s at a Town Hall Meeting in Perry Bay last night.

Following Hurricane Maria in September 2017, hundreds of Dominicans moved to the twin island state and took advantage of the OECS Single Market and Economy that allows them to live and work there.

But Skerrit told them that the time has come for them to even consider returning to their homeland permanently.

Accordng to him, the country has not only improved significantly since they left but their services and expertise are needed.

“We have a 133 room Marriot Hotel under construction, a Hilton Hotel under construction. We will be expanding Secret Bay by 42 villas and we also signed an agreement for 70 villas in the mountains of Laudat,” he said.

On top of that he said in the next week or so, his DLP government will sign a contract for a new hotel project adjacent to the current Kempinski Hotel.

“In the next 36 months, we will have the most modern tourism infrastructure in the Caribbean and while I do not want to upset my friend Gaston Browne, I am saying that you Dominicans here in Antigua will have to come home to help me run and manage these hotels…” he said.

The prime minister tried at best to convince those gathered at the Multi Purpose Center that the Dominica that they left after Maria is not the same island.

“The country has made a lot of improvements in infrastructure and just last week, a huge shipment of cement came in which will be used to fix sidewalks and fix potholes,” he claimed.

In fact, the prime minister said that the road woes faced by residents in Dominica will soon become a thing of the past in about two months.

Astaphan addressing DLP supporters in Antigua

Meantime, Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan addressed the gathering saying to them that they should not allow the Opposition United Workers Party to be successful at the polls, at least not if they can help it.

“If those fellas win by voodoo or because you decide to stay home, your children would suffer like they did between 2000 and 2010…”.

Astaphan lives between Antigua and Dominica and is the main lawyer for both the Antiguan and Dominican government.

Dominican calypsonians Chester “Daddy Chess” Letang and Derrick “Hunter” St. Rose performed at the DLP political meeting.

The event was chaired by the DLP general secretary and candidate for Grand Bay, Edward Registe.

Skerrit is desperate papa. He is telling Dominicans to come back home because his government is going to fix the sidewalks and potholes. Hahahahaha. He promises jobs in hotels. How many well-paying, permanent jobs will be created given the low visitor arrivals and hotel occupancy rates? The fifty persons they trained for jobs in the Morocco hotel are still waiting.

We appreciate the new hotels that are coming. God bless Sam for his vision. We would like to see Rosalind Bay make a come back because it was the biggest provider of employment in the south east. Can government pay attention to Rosalind Bay because I am certain that no one government official has ever visited that beautiful resort after Maria

You obviously didn’t either. The name is Rosalie. not Rosalind.

@Me…… we can see Sam is proactive and took action immediately after Maria. He went to the government to negotiate in spite of the discouragement of the UWP mob.
My question is “what has the owners of the Rosalie property done ? ”
We see an accusation from someone who cannot even spell the name of the place ( Rosalind, ha ha ?) If he was really concerned he may have visited the place and make an informed comment. We know being informed and DOING are not in the uwp play book or their mind set.

Most of the projects being undertaken are being done by foreign entities, so how does this help Dominicas economy? The road projects are been issued to people who has no qualifications in the field hence we are seeing roads whose surfaces are very uneven, no alignment, very dangerous roads and then people wonder why so many accidents at least this is a contributing factor.

Labourites, those of you who still supporting Roosevelt Skerrit, I understand now. What you have is a psychological condition called Stockholm syndrome.

    STOCKHOLM SYNDROME, definition:
Feelings of trust or affection felt in many cases of kidnapping or hostage-taking by a victim towards a captor.

The good news is, there is a cure. Google it. It’s time for change.

Skerrit if you were doing well for the Dominicans on island, then you would not be in Antigua begging Dominicans in Antigua to come home and vote so the DLP can win an election.
Worst of all you are asking the Dominicans who are living a better life in Antigua to come back home to live and the Dominicans on island are seeing MISERY under DLP governance.

PM respect the Dominicans in Antigua they are NO FOOLS!!!!!!!

I have never seen a “working” incumbent government go to any further lengths for a bid to be re-elected. The real question is WHY!?
Is like you had the mandate for so long but have not really performed -the proof is in the quality of life of a typical citizen-and resorts to literally begging for continuation.
It’s really sad when a man grovels after having so many opportunities. Never again should Dominicans keep any Politician in offcie for so long, not good for the Country and certainly not good for that person’s mental health.
Dominican needs a break, let’s see whether real investors will chose our Country. Skerrit needs a rest too..smh. Maybe only then he’ll come to grips with reality. Dominica is for all of Us.
Name one Foreign investor that came to Dominica on their own accord under the current DLP. Further name 100 jobs created as a result. Now compare with the rest of the OECS.. #wakeup!! We continue to wear ignorance as a badge of Honor.

“In fact, the prime minister said that the road woes faced by residents in Dominica will soon become a thing of the past in about two months.” Well, this one should be easy proof of the veracity of this man’s words. 2 months (July , August), and then boom, all the roads in Dominica are repaired. Walk with your eyes open my people.

So my fellow Dominicans, here is a simple test to see if what is said corresponds with what will happen.”In fact, the prime minister said that the road woes faced by residents in Dominica will soon become a thing of the past in about two months.”
This is July, so by the ending of September (giving some extra time), we in Dominica should be driving on smooth maintained roads. We are waiting.

The UWP is credible for your inforamtion “Mr. Kid” immature on the Block. Hope you are well read and not just blind and myopic as to whom you talk of daily and nightly. Skerrit must Go. He has lost it, no ideas, no developmental thrust, he hands out money, not development of our people. He has turned our people to beggars and they Should We love our PM”. Well, this is deceitful and wrong, and Skerrit and his failed+19 worthless Ministers and corrupt Labour government must Go. Go On, Get Lost. Skerrit has failed us, Has failed our Domininca and has killed our agricultural sector and other sectors that could have development to gain more employment. All we see is Skerrit hoping on some plane, flies there and everywhere and returns empty handed and more intellectually dormant as to what to do and we say love PM

It is obvious that prime minister Skerrit have a comprehension problem. Every election he gave the same beautiful assessment of things to come to Dominica to improve the island economy etc. like the hotels that can not open, the international airport he has made a phantom, the fixings of Roseau sidewalks. The time has come for him to leave gracefully and save himself the embarrassment of loosing his own seat

Who are the “we have hotels building;” if you build a million hotels in the country, and you do not have an International Airport to bring Tourist into the country, to support the hotels what purpose your hotels will serve?

No International Airport is the reason the Moroccans left you with the unfinished sinking Moroccan in Portsmouth.

Kempinski’s five star resort hotel at the Cabrits is scheduled to open mid. Oct. this year with 160 rooms, min. rate U.S.660/night for a double. Sam Raphael’s place has a planned staffing level of 160 for 85 rooms, a ratio of just below 2.0. This is relatively low and I would expect the Kempinski to have a ratio of at least 2.5, which tranlates into a staff of min. 400. I doubt we have that number of skilled, experienced hospitality workers of the right
available right now. For the room rates they charge guests will expect top class service.

We put up with too much in this country. no checks and no balances for what this government/party is doing? They can just hop on a jet and go have a convention in another country, rent a whole ferry, rent vehicles, hotels, large convention center and nobody asking questions? This is too much. Honestly speaking I am a labourite but I must say I feel insulted by Skerrit. His behaviors make me feel as if he taking us laborites as fools that can’t read, can’t, hear, can’t see and can’t understand right from wrong. Life is hard in Dominica and making ends meet is a struggle. I have a good job here with the government and I have a decent salary. But the truth is, I got paid on Friday and after paying my bills I even forget today is month-end because it feels like I didn’t get paid. If I with a good job feels that way imagine how those with a less salary or without a salary experiencing. To see the PM hire a ferry from our money to take 200 hundred laborites to Antigua just to attend a DLP meeting is unbelievable! In addition to that to see him waive departure tax which would amount to $17,200, is just pure madness in broad daylight. Not only that but 95% of those that went to Antigua didn’t come to work today. Man I am fedup with this madness while I gwayaying to make ends…

    July 1, 2019

I still Red but those acts of desperation of PM really leads me to wonder if PM knows he has failed us in Dominica and therefore he has to look abroad to Dominicans that to run for help. Why Antigua PM? Why was that town house not take place in Roseau or even Portsmouth our potato garden? By running to Antigua are you not giving open minded people every reason to conclude that you are very weak at home? I find after 19 years in office Dominicans in Antigua would rather prefer to come down here to work, pay taxes and enjoy a future here. But when they are running out because they dont see a future here and then you can go get them only wben you need their vote, is very bad and makes us look very stupid. In my opinion you caused Antiguans to see us as fools and gave them more reasons to exploit our people. You Mister PM, just named all those hotels as ”we” , I take that to mean Government of Dominica , unfortunately you did not mention Jungle Bay ( which has just re-opened , are you implying then that Dominicans have no shares in Jungle bay ? considering it was Dominican Passports and donated funds.
Secondly , if hundreds of Dominicans , migrated to Antigua , how’s that then , the population is still seventy thousand , are you saying that there are Hundreds of Hatians who came over to replace the migrated Dominicans ?Man look confusion, if the Diaspora Dominicans return home and are on the voters list ,with the Haitians also listed to vote then the voters list will be bloated and cause major problems , don’t you think?

I suppose you have enough to leave for your children, if you have any, your wife, if she is from the real Bird Klan, I am sure without your help she may have inherited something from her family, and trust me the Birds are not poor people.

I know them all very well!

There is a reason why you have chosen to live and work in Antigua in your final days; give the youth of Dominica a chance to bring new blood into government.

    DNO,
As part of the reporting, you should have told the readers which party formed the government between 2000 and 2010.

ADMIN: We believed this information was widely known for anyone with an interest in Dominican politics, perhaps we were mistaken.

The DLP has formed the government since they won national elections in 2000.

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

Admin, the fact is when the UWP lost there were no majority winner; hence a coalition was formed led by the Late Roosevelt “Rosie” Douglas, of which Roosevelt Skerrit was part and parcel to this day.

So, if one asks, let it be known for almost twenty-five years, the labor party, and remnants of the Dominica Freedom party has destroyed Dominica.

Remember Charles Savarin president of Dominica is (was) a member of the Freedom Party; he is the one who instigated the overthrow of Patrick John, and brought a civil war to Dominica in 1979!

According to the constitution once campaigning has stared the House of parliament must be dissolved , but we seeing skerro abusing his powers to use his incumbency to campaign on the Gov’t purse.

Parliament is only dissolved when the date of election is announced. The existing government (ministers) remain in office until the day after election. the opposition does not get paid.
There is never money in the Treasury .Revenue collected for the day is deposited in the Consolidated fund. No Minister signs financial documents and payments by checks or transfer are made by the Accountant General. The Director of Audit has the authority to review all transactions to ensure that they are legit.

Thank you very much DNO, now I get the full gist and understanding of what Tony Astaphan said regarding Dominican children who “would suffer like they did between 2000 and 2010”. But wait, As if is Labour Party, this same Labour Party that was in power at that time wee…….Well I suppose our children, and whoever else, will continue to suffer, because, Tony, for your information, is NOT children alone that suffering. When children suffer, their parents and adults in their community suffer too, physically and emotionally, among many other ways. So you are confirming and endorsing the poor report card of the ruling Labour Party, from 2000-2010, and up to the present, because it is only getting worse. Skerrit is the author of confusion, the architect of poverty, the mastermind of deception and corruption. He fed his countrymen with lies and false hope in Antigua. The unemployment rate in Dominica is extraordinarily astronomical. People cannot find decent paying jobs. If nationals are so gullible to return to an economically depressed Dominica then they do so at their own peril. Unemployment is at crisis level; there are hardly, if any, sustainable good paying jobs; tourism is in the doldrums; the country is sinking into the abyss. The leader has forfeited any chance of retaining power. Dominica is severely wounded and badly hurting.

“If workers win we are going to become 5 to 10 years behind”
Meanwhile we’re 20 years behind with the DLP. I’d see 5-10 as an improvement.
“they get rich and full their bank accounts then they will start to share. If ever they share bcuz they don’t believe in helping or giving”
Which is exactly what the DLP are doing. Not every party is DLP though.
“Let DLP continue to build this land. LENNOX DOE HAVE CONTACTS LIKE SKERRIT.”
Building? With the worst economy in the OECS with low barriers of entry, Dominica has been built up for failure. All the “contacts” Skerrit has are contacts of Dominica and will be passed on to any new government coming in.

The Commonwealth of Dominica has had diplomatic relations with the kingdom of Morocco since 2010 and this will continue under a new government in Dominica. The personal friendship Roosevelt Skerrit enjoyed with king Mohammed has cooled, if not soured since the hotel debacle at the Cabrits. Lennox Linton would nurture a relationship with Morocco if only to promote the notion of self determination for the African people of the western Sahara and restore our country’s image that got badly damaged by Skerrit’s horse trading.

“You dont want to upset Gaston Brown?” You see Brown looking like he worry with the nonsense you saying? He maybe well wishing some of them take the bait so his people can get their jobs cause if is one place with Dominicans is Antigua.
But lets check it, you have 133 rooms in Kempachi and Hilton, lets give it another 133 rooms. So you need 2 managers, a board, maids, cooks, yard men, accountants. etc. So lets say you have place for 150 (give or take )staff for those two hotels. That’s what you going Antigua to recruit workers for? What about the people not in the service industry? The Nurses, teachers, bankers, Airport staff, police, you want them back as well?to be house maids? To help you run two hotels? What about the Dominicas that on island and want a job?
I would pay money, to see the person that would leave their job in Antigua to come work at Kempachi hotel.

@Iamanidiot, that is where you guys are making those damn mistakes. The Nurses, teachers, bankers, Airport staff, police, do not generate revenue, because they are all government workers.

Whoever own the hotels will pay its employees, the owner pays the taxes for his business on the Island, and so does the revenue go on to circulate until it reaches the Treasury.

If the government paid all people who worked in Dominica? Where would the revenue come from, to pay for further improvement of the country?

And to think that 45 people agree with this comment! Good Lord!

Here is my question again, We have hotels, are you advocating that the doctors, pilots, nurses, and teachers return from Antigua to work in that hotel? Because that’s what the PM suggested. What you talking about generating revenue? No body asked the government to pay the hotel staff. That’s not the point. I’m not even sure I understand what you saying.

Any Dominican who would leave Antigua, go to Dominica to vote for Skerrit would have to be a fool!

The reason there are more than twenty-five thousand Dominicans living in Antigua, is because Roosevelt screw up Dominica destroying everything in his path, destroying the economy of the country. Our people are disrespected in Antigua, treated like dogs, nevertheless they survive there better than living in Dominica.

Skerrit is desperate, anybody voting for that guy is a vote to help him destroy themselves, and our country!

The man is so desperate; he paid a boat to transport Dominicans to Antigua to go to Antigua International Airport to greet and clap for him when he and Melisa came off their charted flight.

That has never happened in politics in Dominica before; Dominicans should take note of that; and do everything in their power to get rid of that evil man, his wife, and the puppets who are in league with him playing ministers messing up the life’s of our people and…

We will be expanding Secret Bay by 42 villas and we also signed an agreement for 70 villas in the mountains of Laudat, on top of that DLP government will sign a contract for a new hotel project adjacent to the current Kempinski Hotel. In the next 36 months, we will have the most modern tourism infrastructure in the Caribbean and while I do not want to upset my friend Gaston Browne, I am saying that you Dominicans here in Antigua will have to come home to help me run and manage these hotels….”

Folks this is very revealing. Mr. Skerrit admitting that he can not win the election without the support from overseas voters, what you think of that? Secondly he is saying that he has not got enough qualified people in Dominica to run “his” hotels. You think our people, if they already have a job in Antigua will come home to work for less money because our hourly wage is below that of Antigua.
Why does he not use all the NEP people he has. They are cheap enough. Why can they not work in the hotels? Why he did not train them if he is running things? Perhaps he is thinking of using the refugee Haitians but most of them can not speak English to serve sophisticated foreign hotel guests.. I am not laughing at them but that is the truth.

Some of them look forward to that free ride home; more ignorant than when they left.

I sat in a cook-shop in Roseau one day and listened to one such person talking about Buggy-peak and how Antiguan’s calls it a mountain.

Before they use to give money to people like my cousin Athena to buy ticket in Canada, and America, to fly them home to vote,  don’t know now Roosevelt step on Athena head, and spit in her face if she will still be the puppet in Canada to supply the tickets!

I don’t think Roosevelt have the red devils in New York, and New Jersey believing his crap any more!

Guy by the time it’s all over in 2020, plenty of us will be disappointed, there might be a coalition government, but the corrupted Roosevelt shall no longer be Prime Minister of Dominica.

After that I doubt America will become a refuge for certain politicians, some wife have  Green Card paid for via marriage!

Hello Born Liar, that immature Kid on the block, with nothing to do. That Kid is hooked on the wall and will remain so until his dooms day.
The UWP is a threat to you, your friends and your failed incompetent Skerrit. Try to give some statistics and the method f the Bin Bool and Fertlizer Bobol used by your so called friend, failed PM Skerrit. We need it to be accounted for. He better do, because he will be out of office and he will run but he can`t hide. Political incompetence and thievery of states funds is not a good thing. Red Clinic, the Bobols, states cash sent to people all over the place is fraudulent and against the Protocal. There is a Welfare Division, an agent of the state to look after the Welfare of Dominicans in need is belong abused and fraudulently managed. This is Bobol and will be dealt with. Skerrit must Go, get out, Go away, you are a big failure and we dont need you. Skerrit Must Go
Welcome Hon Lennox Linton and his highly, professional UWP Team.

Dude every vote is as important as the voter. Every Dominican where they may be is important in the eyes of our leader, our PM. It is not a question of majority or minority its a matter of “all a we is one”
I have been reading the school results examinations . Dominicans kids are making all Dominican proud….no majority or minority there. Those results are not blue or red. They have no colours they are the results of the fantastic Education policies of a DLP government that want ALL OUR CHILDREN to succeed.
Look at the efforts and success of the reconstruction after Maria and compare it to that of people who were affected by Harvey and you will open your eyes.
In Peurto Rico and Houston people are still existing is water and no roofs. In Houston FEMA gave 1.5 billion dollars to assist those affected and after two and a half years only 4 homes have received assistance.
Search the net, ABC tv page, do check facts.
Skerrit and DLP must be given hats off for…

KID, you are always on the wrong side of the issue. Supporting men who have ruined Dominica. No where in the sub region so many people live from hand to mouth like in Dominica. Hunger pains are always present. Begging is the main occupation of too many citizens. This has to be put to an end. The poor can take no more of this miserable life. Boot them out!

   I don’t like going down the gutters ,but with labarats like kid-brain-on-the-block,I can’t be nice! :?: You tell lies like your one-man rogue regime prime mistake who’s the son of the father of lies! Honourable Lennox Linton didn’t go overseas to negotiate for any money on behalf of Dominica as it’s not in power to so! Any money which has to do with Dominica has to go straight to the government, don’t you know :?: That’s the problem with most of you on this slave plantation island, living in ignorance and malice! What Mr.Linton is do,is making himself known and having the diasporans familiarize themselves with him and his politics! If they in turn decide to finance his campaign,it’s all well and good,at least you know where his money is coming from :?: But do you know where the money for the campaign of your one-man rogue regime prime mistake is coming from :?: So stop writing the devil’s lies on here!!!

.@ Kid, you are telling the truth. There are eye witness following Linton in New York, New Jersey and Houston recently talking about Linton not campaigning for votes but begging for money. All of Dominica heard him on Q scamming for money to pay legal fees for his lying tongue. He never gave reports for transparency. How much did he collect vis a vis the quantum of his legal debt.
Lin-oxx Lin-scam-ton and his mob are experts at DUPLICITY.
The biggest lie of all was trying to point blame for his legal troubles on our PM. He was saying he need the money because Skerrit wanted to take his house. Look commess . WE NEED PROGRESS NOT COMMESS.

You Kid on the Block, answer the damn question or go away. You and pointers, deceitfully protecting this failed comical Odd Minister for years with absolutely no results. Dominica cries first to us and your Skerrit has ruined our nature isle, due to hopeless people like you who brag rubbish to fit into the immature line of your failed Skerrit. Let us know how decent you are, what do you think of the thievery and abuse of states funds. For example: 1. The Bin Bobol, 2. The Fertlizer Bobol, 3. The Red Clinic, abusive and deliberately taken away from the payers and where this is the role of the Welfare Division. That then for me is thievery of the public purse and we need to know who is involved and how it is done. The Red Clinic Money dished out so often, is that for developmental work, or is it to buy loyalty from you and other blind political bats who keep on rubbing on this failed political clown. Skerrit must go He is out of date and must go away.
Welcome Hon Linton and UWP Team.
