Castle Bruce Health District, Self-help Life Style Changes Control Chronic Non Communicable Diseases/SLIC Programme has taken on the Waitukubuli National Trail.
The first hike started on Saturday 2nd February, 2013 when a group of twenty-one members from Good Hope to Kalinago Territory hiked segment 5.
That figure was doubled as 42 persons hiked segment 6 on Saturday 23rd February. Only natural, local snacks, especially fresh fruits and vegetables were encouraged on the hike. Members indulged in the experience, embracing a day of fresh fruits and vegetable as they enjoyed the fauna and flora of both segments. The hospitality of Mr. Simon Laurent on Segment 5 was a high point as he shared local foods from his farm and educated the group about some of his animals. A first for many was the Guinea Bird, which is a unique and beautiful bird. A view and bath in the Emerald pool were refreshing.
Segment 6 was nothing short of remarkable as from inception our breaths were literally taken away by the Pagua Hill. The walk and in some cases jog through the Kalinago Territory was full of history and adventure. Views of the Barana Haute and the Salybia Catholic Church was for many the highlights while others, the fresh coconut water and mangoes offered as more gratifying.
In observance of World Health Day, SLIC hiked segment four (4) on Saturday 6th April. 58 SLIC members aged 10 to 65 years, from Kalinago Territory to Petite Soufriere, successfully completed the hike from Pond Casse to Wotten Waven and were treated to a bath and lovely views of the Middleham Falls, Trafalgar Falls, several rivers along the path and the natural hot springs in Wotten Waven.
Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension are considered lifestyle illnesses. It has been proven that with lifestyle changes, eg; exercise and the right foods, Chronic Non Communicable Diseases can be controlled, therefore SLIC hopes that with these increased activities within the district, the Health Team will continue to record improvements in blood pressure and blood sugar levels, decrease risks for CNCD’s and prevent where possible.
SLIC intends to hike one segment per month.
