The 2014 Secondary Schools Independence Athletics Meet will take place on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th October in Roseau – the 2013 Edition was held at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth.
The annual event, which is in its 35th year, is expected to bring alive an exciting display of the country’s best track and field athletes at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium over the two days.
Sixteen (16) institutions have registered for this year’s championships.
They are the Pierre Charles Secondary School, Dominica Grammar School, Goodwill Secondary School, St. Mary’s Academy, Wesley High School, Convent High School, St. Martin Secondary School, Orion Academy, Portsmouth Secondary School, Isaiah Thomas Secondary School, North East Comprehensive School, Castle Bruce Secondary School, Business Training Centre, Dominica Community High School, St. John’s Academy and the Dominica State College.
An opening ceremony at 9:30 am on Wednesday 15th will precede the track and field events where speeches will come from the Sports Coordinator – Mr. Trevor Shillingford, the Minister for Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs – Hon. Gloria Shillingford and the Minister for Culture, Youth and Sports – Hon. Justina Charles.
Following this ceremony, the schools will begin competition in events to include Shot Put, High Jump, Javelin and races such as the 100m, 400m, 3000m and 5000m races.
On the 2nd and final day (Thursday 16th), events will start at 12:30 pm and are expected to go into the early evenings and competition will be done under the lights; the highlights of Day 2 are expected to be the finals of the exciting sprint and relay events.
In 2013, the top female athlete was Anelia Austrie from the North East Comprehensive School and the top male athlete was Errolson John of the Dominica Grammar School whilst the North East Comprehensive School won both the male and female categories.
