Roseau, Dominica, (June 6, 2016): If Dwayne Bravo were to rewrite his song #Champion today, he would have to include the line, “Browne is a Champion!” At the age of 60, Abraham Browne showed all the table tennis players and supporters present at the Goodwill Primary School on Sunday, June 5, 2016 that he still had it in him to be a champion.
In the semi-final round of the Open Singles, Browne beat Devon Prince 11-8, 11-9 and Jaleel Lewis beat Gabriel Thomas 11-4, 12-14, 11-8. The stage was then set for the match of the night, the finals of the Open Singles. The 18-year old Lewis put up a good fight in the first game reaching deuce (10-10), but experience and perseverance paid off in the end for Browne who dug deep to win 12-10 and finish off the second game 11-7, for a 2-0 win over the youngster.
The day began with the Open Singles for 12-16 year olds and seven hours and 181 games later ended with the Open Singles. Peter Letang won the Men’s Singles title and the Men’s Doubles title together with Devon Prince but was unable to participate in the Open Singles, while Larrysa Dover picked up the Women’s Singles Title and the Women’s Doubles title with partner Gem Eloi. In the Open Singles 12-16, Samuel Stevens lifted the trophy and Jaleel Lewis won the Open Singles 17-20 category. In the Mixed Doubles Trice Dorsette and Desmond Boney were a formidable pair and eventually reigned supreme.
