Cavaliers Sports Club take leadership in preparing young cricketers to succeed

The 2011 Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) League competition season is quickly coming to an end, and poised at the top of both the Intermediate and Premier League Divisions are the Cavaliers Sports Club.

The Club has been in existence for over 40 years and has produced national and international players of note in the persons of Irving Shillingford, Henry Elwin, Tom Lafond, Joey Pierre and others.

In recent times however, the Club with sponsorship from New India Insurance of its Intermediate Team and Print Express sponsorship of its Premier League Team, has taken the lead amongst Dominica Clubs in recruiting, nurturing and training young cricketers to develop their skills at the level required for participation in cricket at the very highest level.

The goals of Cavaliers according to their President, Tom Lafond, are to provide the kind of support and environment that will prepare our players to become international cricketers. Two of those players currently in the Cavaliers program are West Indies Under-19 players Kavem Hodge and National and Windward Islands Under-19 Player Jerlani Robinson. Those two players have demonstrated the kind of skill and discipline necessary to get them to the very top echelon of the game. There are others like Odiam Honore, Joel Mingo, Casimir Benjamin, who are also in the Cavaliers program who also show the kind of promise that can take them to cricket at the international level.

To help these young cricketers become proficient at the game, the club together with their sponsors invest significant amount of time and resources towards the players development. The Club provides net practices for training, coaching, housing during matches, meals and more importantly mentoring and counseling services.

The investment is paying dividends, and the elevation of Cavaliers to the top of the League in both Divisions, is a manifestation of the contribution of the cadre of young players. The focus on young players is central to the Clubs strategic plan.  Both President Lafond and Executive Dengs Shillingford were very clear in their summation of their programme”.

Our goal as a Club is not only to win the local cricket competition but more importantly to help the DCA and the country discover and prepare young cricketers to take Dominica to the zenith on Windward Island Cricket and to place as many players as we can to play cricket at the international level.”

Dominica has always been a strong cricketing nation, and the goal of Cavaliers is to assist in bringing Dominica Cricket team back to the winning ways. Clubs such as Marina Blasters are also preparing young cricketers for success.  Cavaliers remain hopeful however that other clubs and sponsors would invest in the youth and cricket, because after all cricket represents a legacy of a winning sport for Dominica.

i so agree with the comment above. These men are teaching the boys to win at all cost, cheat, cheat and cheat some more. My child cetainly wouldn’t be part of your club. No thank you. The preference shown to some “young” ones over others is so openly blatant and disgusting. Talk to some of the “marginalized” young men in that club and you will know the truth.

If the young players feel they are marginalized, then their parents should take them out of that club and find some other club where there is a better fit for them.

This is a good thing for young people, especially boys, but they also need to groom them morally. The members of Cavaliers Sports Club are womanizers, heavy alcoholics and the young guys are seeing that. What example are they setting for them morally and spiritually? Sportsmen should be discipline. Groom those young men physically, spiritually also.
