DABA president suspended from national basketball league

Mickey_JosephPresident of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) and head coach of the Sign Man Xmen Mickey Joseph, has been suspended from the national basket ball league.

Joseph and assistant coach Milton Paul, were both suspended from the league for three games for “verbal abuse of an official,” according to a DABA release.

The incident occurred on Friday 26th July 2013, at the end of game one of a premier division playoff quarter final between the Signman X-men and the Paix Bouche Eagles, which the X-men won in the dying seconds of regulation.

Coach Mickey Joseph was ejected from the game after receiving two technical fouls, which earned him an automatic one game suspension.

However, both Joseph and Paul were suspended for three games for their remarks to the official after the game which, according to the DABA release, was an infraction of the 2013 Lime National League Playoff rule no.11, which requires a three-games suspension for the verbal abuse of a referee or score official.

It would be interesting to know who summoned that meeting to take that swift disciplinary action against the Assistant Coach and Coach/DABA President. I think The DABA ought to have a bye-law ion its Constitution to the effect that, in the interest of the integrity of the Association and of the game, that an active member of a team or a team official should be debarred from holding office on the Executive of the DABA. Just a thought.

How can the president of the league also be the head coach of a team in the same league this is so wrong

IF EVERYONE IS DOING DURGS, SHOULD I DO DRUGS TOO? IN EVERYTHING IN LIFE, THERE ARE LAWS, PRINCIPLES, INTEGRETY, ACCOUNTABILITY, EXAMPLE, DISIPLAINE, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, PUNISHMENT FOR BRAKING RULES AND LAWS. EVEN THOSE HOLDING THE LAW ARE BRAKING IT, WE STILL HAVE TO MAKE THEM EXAMPLES, BUT STILL KNOW LAW, RULES, AND REGULATIONS STILL EXIST.

IF THERE WERE NOW RULES, LAWS ETC, WHAT KIND OF WORLD WE BE LIVING? WE HAVE RULES AND LAW IN PLACE FOR EVERY WALK OF LIFE. JUST OBEY AND DO THE RIGHT THING, WHEN WE DISOBAY, WE HAVE TO BE PUNISHED. FROM THE PRIME MINISTER TO THE STREET CLEANER HAVE TO TAKE HEED.

So…you mean this is the same President that sat down and made the same rules that he himself is breaking. What an example for the young one to follow…

hope this suspension vacates him from his seat for all decision making by the executive during the period of suspension……..

Mickey should be ashamed of himself for the kind of behaviour he displays as the president of DABA. He should be the one setting the appropriate examples for others to follow.
Its no wonder it took the real PRO to break the news in the media. Previously every piece of news would be communicated through him and by him however this time Maggie was assertive enough to do it. Way to go Maggie. Thumbs up !!!!!!!!!

    August 4, 2013

Mickey ought to resign immediately. I am very disappointed but not at all surprised by his behavior. He has lost the respect of the general body so he has to do the honourable thing and step down

      August 6, 2013

Just so you know, if Mickey resigns, basketball will fall. For how much people cry him down. He is very active in keeping basketball alive. If he steps down now, I guarantee you, basketball will fall

The two gentle men actions might cost their team. Rules & Regulations must be enforce. I say hats off to the DABA.

    • at all costs?
      August 5, 2013

Is that a case of winning at all costs. This is really NOT good. Come on leaders, we can do so much better in sports.

Mr. President remember is people like you that have the constitution of the association to that high standard.

Hope you now recognize what emotional intelligence is.

Hope you accept what good governance of the game is all about.

And hope you allow democracy , rule of law and ego to remain in check.

As the president of DABA he should be fired from the executive. Rule of discipline.

why in the first place is he the president and coach of the same league/association of a team participating, conflict of interest anyone? Hmmmph kinda low as an example to basketball in Dominica.

    • Jungle
      August 5, 2013

I understand what you are saying but it is hard in Dominica to be apart of the association and not be a player or a coach. Sometimes people do lose it but that don’t make him a bad person. I am not condoning what he did. I think he should make a public apology and don’t make it happen again.

president of the league should NOT be a coach FULL STOP

  24. Righteous
    August 3, 2013

It is good that he was suspended, but as president of the association, he is not setting a good example for the rest of the league. Discipline is the number 1 asset of great sports men and people in leadership roles should set the example.

    One Love Dominicans

  25. weh
    August 3, 2013

Serve him right. Set the example nuh. You’re the bloody president, and he still show his face again you know…

    • show his face???
      August 5, 2013

I hope is not at a match because if he did show his face then the opposing team should have been given the win. If he is suspended he CANNOT show his face close to his team. Huh!

  26. Mango-Bab
    August 3, 2013

Now when the President of the DABA – who happens to be a coach of a top Premier Division team in the league gets on in such a manner that first he be ejected from the game, and then verbally abuses a game official, what does it say. However, I am glad to see that the Association is sending out a strong and clear message, that no executive member or any one else for that matter, is above the game in Dominica. That action was pretty swift.

That’s how Democracy works well with institutions who have men and women who uphold standards..

Maybe the IPO can convene a meeting with the DABA Grouping to see how things are done..

it’s many moons since i have heard of a institution in Dominica standing firm…

But how come the ruling regime didn’t interfere with that decision they rule all and sundry in Dominica….

Is there a glimpse of hope in a rather depress Dominica.. congrats to the DABA!

    • d vs d
      August 5, 2013

He is dedicated all right, Kudos to him. But… what about discipline. He can and must do better than that. Simple

  31. just to let you know
    August 3, 2013

It sounds like the DABA is taking a no nonsense attitude towards members who do not abide by the rules.

Just to let you all no the president/ coach of signman xmen was standing about ten feet at the back of his bench coaching his team. instead of the referees throwing out of the park he was warn.

after being warned he continued to utter instructions to his team. he was again approached and after a lengthy delay he moved to the back of the scoresrs table but still in communication distance to his team.

Now tell me as the president of the DABA do you think that Mickey’s behaviour last night was in good keeping with discipline.

It is my belief that if you are suspended you should not be near the venue. Whatever that is to be done in the capacity as president, the vice president would take it up.

Mickey’s action last night was childish and over the top demonstrated a high level of indiscipline.

    • stinking
      August 5, 2013

This thing is beginning to stink. DABA you start enforcing disciplinary actions against the man doh go soft now eh. Do what you have to do. The opposing team should have been given the win… The coach gave Paix Bouche Eagles the win

    August 3, 2013

Shame on you Mickey. What a bad example you are showing to the members of the DABA, to your Team and other sportsmen in Dominica. I played sports for over 30 years in Dominica, and when the court language was getting too much for me I just gracefully bowed out. I would encourage you to do the same if self respect and discipline is becoming elusive for you.
Next thing we will hear you involved in a fight with the younger players???
That’s very bad PR for you as the President of the DABA and a member of the DOC.

    • fight!
      August 5, 2013

Well.. a certain player was involved in an altercation in that same league and as a reward he was made manager of the Interschool team to St Vincent. These people are role models. The young sports people look up to them. Help us please in DA
