DOC dispute referred to IOC

Dominica Olympic CommitteeThe Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) has referred an ongoing dispute between DOC member organizations and the DOC executive, to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In a statement released on Friday the DOC said it is awaiting the IOC’s response on the matter.

In a letter dated April 25, the member organizations wrote to the DOC general secretary instructing that a special meeting be convened “under the powers of Article 18.1 of the Bye-Laws of the Dominica Olympic Committee.”

The members appeared to be concerned about many issues which they said must be addressed when the meeting was held.

The special meeting was held at the Fort Young Hotel on May 16 but, after, according to member organizations, it was  going “nowhere,” a resolution was passed giving the DOC executive 21 days to hold an Annual General Meeting in order that fresh elections he held.

In its statement on Thursday, the DOC said the matter was referred to the IOC “as it is authorized by Virtue of the Olympic Charter.”

“Repeated appeals were made by the executive for the matters raised at the special general meeting to be brought to the International Olympic Committee for a civil resolution; however, some members feared their interests would not have been served. The question; is there any need for elections in 21 days?” the statement from the DOC said.

The statement was signed by Felix Wilson, President of the DOC and Thomas B. Dorsette, general secretary of the organization.

It is very troubling that Wilson et al will risk a disqualification of the DOC by the IOC which will affect the very athletes they are supposed to represent. That shows you that these guys only care about themselves. I wonder what Dominica’s most decorated track athlete thinks about this current situation.

The same exec was in place when he competed. Luckily Dominica was allowed to compete in 96 after some glitches. It is time these guys make way for more competent representation.

DNO…… Is the President and General Secretary telling us that the news release attached is the only information that was sent to the IOC? If that is so, it doesn’t sound right, it doesn’t look right…..
The President of the DOC, Mr. Felix Wilson might be a competent Chemistry Lecturer, and might have done other things of note in our LOVELY DOMINICA, but if he is the President of 15 voluntary groups and 13 are calling for new elections, dont you think he has gone out of bounds trying to impose his will on the majority?????

Hahaha!! Sorry Dr. Alport and Umpire Doctrove. If we can’t have it for life, no one else will. We will make sure that Dominica looses its affiliated status with the IOC. We will just dissolve the Darn thing!! We answer to no one.

I read the statement. I knew there was likely to be another – credible, side to the story. Its shameful that these facts were not sought out and made known to the public by the media houses that carried the unsubstantiated allegations of impropriety. I hope in the interest of fair and honest journalism, we see the substantial elements of the statement published by the media houses who failed to obtain balance in their earlier stories.

I know most Dominicans are unable to discuss an issue objectively, but let me pose the following question based on the trend of comments: are readers/ commentators denying the fact that the executive members of the aggrieved clubs have themselves failed to properly organize their clubs by way of fulfilling obligations such as – payment of dues, completion of audits, calling required amount meetings as evidence by minutes of meetings? Are readers ignoring the fact that the financial statements of DOC were audited, and the elections were conducted in compliance with the relevant rules and bi-laws? Are readers denying the fact that individuals with vested interests, who have been vocal against the actions of the current executive have been unable to fulfill their administrative duties with regards to their relevant clubs, and some have no substantial track record of success in administration of sports associations – ie in compliance with rules and bi-laws?

Do not worry and have no fear……..These two “distingushed gentlemen” can twist and turn as much as they want…..ELections will be called one day and we the members of the DOC will be able to finally say GOOD RIDDANCE!!!!

Dominica, there is a right way and a wrong way to do everything! With that said it is shameful either way, that it had to come to this. When oh when will my people grow up and wake up to reason?

While I am happy that the matter has been brought to the IOC, I dont understand why the executive wants to hold unto power. We know that many of the affiliates are not meeting their obligation, but what has the executive done to assist these affiliates other than to use them for their own personal benefit? The executive of the DOC has not promoted the development of sports in Dominica, not in the past 4 yrs for sure…………… And they will do anything to remain in the position. I pray that this is resolved soon and that men and women who truly have the development of sports at heart will be given the opportunity to run the DOC as it should be run. For too long Dominica has been used and abused by these people! Please publish DNO.
