Dominica captures four medals at CARIFTA; LIME applaudes efforts of local athletes

Fourteen year-old Luan Gabriel of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School captured the bronze medal in the Under 17 girls 200 m, while Chelsea Linton who narrowly missed out on bronze in the Heptathlon, took the silver in the girls Under 17 Javelin and US based Dominican athlete Thea Lafond jumped her way to a silver medal in the girls Under 20 High Jump and secured bronze in the Under 20 girl’s Triple jump event in the just concluded CARIFTA games.

General Manager of LIME Dominica Jeffrey Baptiste says his company is proud of the achievements of Dominica’s athletes at the games. The games were held at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex in Montego Bay, Jamaica over the Easter weekend. LIME committed to the sponsorship of the Carifta games in 2010 in the Cayman Islands and the company continued as presenting sponsor of the games this year.

“LIME is committed to investing in the Caribbean and in particular in our people. Our investment in the Carifta Games is evidence of our support to the growth and development of our young athletes in our region.” commented Mr. Baptiste. The Carifta games have long been a breeding ground for many world class athletes like Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell and Mr. Baptiste says there is similar potential among local athletes especially those who medaled at this year’s Carifta.

In addition to LIME’s sponsorship of the Carifta games, each individual island gave local support to ensure their athletes participation in the games. LIME Dominica last week presented $15,000 to the Dominica Amateur Athletics Association. LIME also ensured that officials of the teams were able to communicate back home on the progress of the athletes and in the absence of a local reporter at the games, the company also provided credit and support to St. Kitts reporter Vernon Springer who gave daily updates to local radio stations.

A texting competition held during the games will see one lucky customer in each LIME country winning a state of the art Galaxy Tab handset plus $5,000 towards a sporting program in a school of their choice. Last year’s winner, the Convent High School used the funds to commence an inter-schools netball competition.

The athletes are scheduled to return home this week.
