Dominica’s men football team has placed itself in the championship position after defeating Grenada, 2-1, in the first match of a double header on Thursday night in the Windward Island Men’s Football Tournament held at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in St Lucia.

Dominica was placed under early pressure when Grenada scored in the 18th minute of play.

However, two minutes later Dominica got the equaliser through its overseas-based player, Julian Wade, to send the game locked at 1-1 at interval.

In the second half the boys from the Nature Isle defended stoutly, while they piled on the pressure at the other end, resulting in the winning goal from Glenworth Elizee in the 75th minute. It was his second goal in the tournament.

In the second match of the night, St Vincent & the Grenadines defeated host country St Lucia 2-1, to make it to two wins in as many matches.

So after the second round of matches in the tournament, St Vincent & the Grenadines head the points table with 6 points.

Dominica is in second place with four points and host country, St Lucia, third place with one point.

Grenada has so far failed to gain a single point.

The final round of matches will be played on Saturday with Dominica taking on St Vincent & the Grenadines for the championship.

Dominica needs to win in order to receive the title, while St Vincent only needs a draw to be crowned champions.

The other match will be played between St Lucia and Grenada.

Meantime, the second semi final match in the Dominica Football Association’s All Island League, between Petro Caribe Pointe Michel and Exodus Boys, will be played on Sunday at the Bath Estate Playing Field from 5:00 pm.

Congratulations to the Dominica Football Team. Gone are the days when Tyrone Harbin, Walker and Telisford of Grenada use to put as many as six goals at the back of the Dominica net.
