The Dominica Netball Team will be competing at the Caribbean Netball Association Senior Tournament which will be held in St. Lucia this year.
This was revealed by coach of the Dominica Netball Team, Dinnia Joseph, just before the Dominica Netball Association received a full sponsorship for uniforms from FastCash Dominica Ltd.
The tournament runs from October 8th-16th 2017 and the ten final players; Arthlyn Nesty; Curnia John; Christina Sobers; Melissa Williams; Tia Watty; Laureen Lockhart; Rhonda Prince; Stacey Fontaine; Omean Charles, and Verna Graham are ready to win.
Coach of the team, Dinnia Joseph, said that the competition is an avenue to get Dominica back on the map in terms of netball.
“We are planning to do our very best. Dominica has not been in a senior tournament for the last twenty years or so. So we are trying to get Dominica back into the Caribbean netball scene as a senior team. We have had tournaments Caribbean wise but it was under twenty-three and under sixteen,” she said.
She noted that most Caribbean islands have moved on to play netball on an international level, but Dominica has been left behind. The Dominica Netball Association has, therefore “re-affiliated” itself with the International Netball Federation in hopes of being able to get on their feet at the senior level.
She views this regional tournament as a “wetting of our feet” and as a means of getting the local team back into the setting of competitive senior netball.
“This tournament, we see it as a way of wetting our feet so to speak, and we are going to do our very best, but it is to get us back in the setting of competitive senior national netball and to move on from there with netball in Dominica in the future,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, team member, Tia Watty who is an “attacking” player, said that her team is confident in putting their best serve forward.
“Preparation for us have been quite vigorous, we are testing our endurance, and we are testing our commitment as a team. Although we are going into this tournament as ‘underdogs’ as some would call us, we do plan to give our full representation for our country and do the best that we can to bring home the trophy,” she remarked.
I have the utmost faith in you ladies. You all were among the top netballers in your school days, so there is no reason why you all cannot take the championship.
