Dominica targets doping in sports

dopingDominican athletes have been warned that they will soon be tested for drug use and substance abuse.

This as the the island joins forces with other countries to combat doping in sports at all levels.

The National Anti-Doping organization on Monday launched a UNESCO-funded sensitization and education project which focuses on building advocacy to eliminate doping in sports.

Tessa Chaderton Shaw of the Caribbean Regional Anti Doping Organization said athletes will not be made aware when the tests will be conducted.

“Athletes will soon be tested out of competition, as part of a regional testing grant offered by the world anti-doping agency. My message to athletes and to their coaches and team managers is to get with the program, get educated because testing is coming. We don’t tell you when the testing is coming but it will be happening sooner than you think,” she warned.

Chairman of the National Anti-Doping Organization Inc. (NADO), Felix Wilson said the aim is to make the entire populace and particularly all involved in sports, to join in the fight against doping in sports.

Wilson said one of the recommendations of the organizations is to facilitate the enacting of an anti-doping law in Dominica.

“Athletes, you are doing injustice to your health,” he cautioned.

Meantime Education Minister Peter Saint Jean acknowledged the contribution that UNESCO has made to the country’s development.

He represented Sports minister Justina Charles at Monday’s press conference.

“I wish to congratulate UNESCO for funding the project here and for the tremendous work that has been done to address the global fight against doping in sport,” he said.

UNESCO has contributed US$20,000 to the project.

‘Doping’ is the word used in sport when athletes use prohibited substances or methods to unfairly improve their sporting performance.

I there a problem or just following band wagon. Other countries test because of issues with performance enhancing drugs, but if you don’t have one in D’a you don’t create one.

Unless you just want to further discriminate against marijuana smokers, which is clearly the target as there are no issues with steroids and other enhancing drugs. One can see right through that. Amen!

what they need to do with that money is buy propper gears for our athletes, shoes, protective gears and anything else required, then send each team member for a propper physical examination blood work, xrays, diagnostic tests the works, then ensure that when they come to practice they had a propper meal and will have a better one when they get home, buy water and gatorade so that they can remain hydrated during the practices and games, our policy makers have their head screwed on badly they need to fix it. Tell unesco where to shove their money, why do they feel we need a drug testing program?

Good move.By all means make it happen. This should also be embraced by the private sector and be extended to pre-employment testing as well as random testing of all workers in the private and public sectors.

Based on their dismal performances at international competition, our athletes must be clean or they are taking the wrong type of drugs….

no athlete in Dominica gets a salary to train in any sports. all our athletes have to find work to survive. training everyday should be their job with a healthy enough salary for doing so. now u want to drug test (and i know smokers of marijuana are the main targets). so give our athletes a reason and incentive to discipline themselves first before such actions or we will continue lagging behind in the athletic world.
