Dominica to host Windward Islands Schools Games

Dominica will host the 2015 Windward Islands Schools Games (WISG) from July 26th – August 2nd.

Student athletes from the Windward Islands are expected on island to participate in basketball (boys & girls), football, netball, volleyball (boys & girls) and track & field.

The Windward Islands Schools Games are part of the tradition of the islands and dates back to 1922. Several athletes who have gone on to represent the various islands have had their foundation at the WISG – Jerome Romain from Dominica and Kirani James of Grenada are amongst the most notable.

It is expected that close to three hundred (300) students and officials will participate in the Games with the Portsmouth Secondary School being used as the Games Village.

The Sports Division in the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture & Constituent Empowerment is responsible for organizing the Games.

An opening ceremony on Sunday, July 26th at 1:30 pm at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium will signal the official start of the Games; His Excellency the President, Mr. Charles A. Savarin and Mrs. Savarin, are expected to be part of the opening.

Following the opening, the track and field event segment will be held and it is expected to go into the evening under lights.

Competition will continue through-out the week of July 26th in basketball, football, netball and volleyball and will culminate with a closing ceremony on the evening of August 2nd at the Cabrits National Park.

Games will be held at the Benjamin’s Park, Windsor Park Sports Stadium and the Massacre and Lindo Park hard courts and the newly refurbished Savanne Paille Hard Court.

Grenada was the 2014 overall champion of the Windward Islands Schools Games.

Dominica last hosted the Games, which are rotated amongst the four islands, in 2011.
