Dominican boxer gets help on way to Olympics

Dominican boxers heading to the London Olympics are expected to get a major boost after Wolverhampton Amateur Boxing Club decided to open its doors to offer training.

Among the first boxers to get training is 26-year-old light middleweight  Hewlett Lucian, who won Dominica’s Golden Glove championship in 2010.

Members of the Britain-based club say they are delighted to assist Hewlett and one has even come out of retirement to give a helping hand.

Phil Edwards, who will be Hewlett’s one-to-one trainer in the gym, has drafted Richie Carter, a former pro and Britain national amateur champion, to help prepare his guest for the Games. Both Edwards and Carter go back 30 years on the British boxing scene.

“Two heads are better than one and, hopefully, Lucian can learn a lot from both me and Richie,” Edwards told British Newspaper Express & Star. “It’s more to help the lad, because Richie was a good pro fighter with a lot of experience. It’s a pleasure to be training a kid that is going to the Olympics, going there is a big thing in boxing. For everyone at the club, it’s a big boost.”

Carter, who retired from pro boxing in 1992, said helping the Dominican made him get back his love for boxing. “I have been in the wilderness but I have got the buzz back now and it hasn’t took me long to get back into it,” he told Express & Star.

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in London from 27 July to 12 August.

Hewlett is a Kalinago from Gullet River in the Kalinago Territory.

Such a senseless sport, standing in a square ring and allowing the other man to punch you in the head while you try to do the same, while simultaneusly disconnecting the nerves of your brains. Foolish!
