The Pan-American Junior Championships came to an end in Colombia on the weekend with Dominica securing a bronze medal in the female high jump competition.
Thea Lafond jumped a height of 1.76 meters in that category and also placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 12.57 meters.
Coach Godwin Dorsette said the high jump competition was difficult for Lafond “as she was made to be running between two events at the same time, something which one could say cost her the gold.”
Chelsey Linton finished her Heptathlon Competition with a national record for Heptathlon of 4,523 points bettering her 2010 CAC Juniors performance by 19 points. She came seventh in the Heptathlon event.
Her performance was hampered by a hamstring injury during the Shot Put event and decided to continue, even if she could not exert maximum force in any other of her four events.
Thus her performances in 200-meter, Long Jump, Javelin and 800-meter were way under what was expected.
The Pan-American Junior Championships was held in Medellín, Colombia from August 23 to 25 2013.
Congratulations Thea, Dominica is proud of you!!
Congrate cuz keep up the good work
Congratulations to both Athletes. Goes to show how our atheletes can succeed with help. I do not think that the young Linton should have been made to continue competing if she got injured, these injuries tend to worsen, and delay recovery. Do they have a health personel with them, to tend to their injuries? I bet know
Congratulations Thea… Olympics ahead..
Go for the Gold! once you start winning we will support you 100%. Yams, dasheen and provisions have natural steroids eat that every other day, eat/drink only natural foods… Island beef and fresh fish, train every every every every day even if its just your mind you training train. Bless
Go Thea – keep it up.
Hi DNO Admin. I commented on this but my comments still “ÄWAITS MODERATION” – by whom? INTERESTINGLY IT WAS THE VERY FIRST COMMENT ON THAT ARTICLE !! Its amazing that very obnoxious comments get posted in quick time but wholesome thought must get moderated for a lifetime before it is posted. I just happen to revisit and notice the comment was not posted. My posting read thus:
CONGRATULATIONS to THEA LAFOND on securing the Bronze Medal. CONGRATS to Chelsey Linton for demonstrating resilience and endurance, notwithstanding her injury. I wish her swift recovery. This is it girls – persist until you succeed, you were not delivered in this world in defeat.
DOMINICA ! This is a clear indication we are well on the road to BRAZIL 2016. We must now ensure that we are not encumbered by the “Last minute syndrome”. Let’s forget also the constant bickering that characterizes our Sports Institutions in recent past. Let’s set aside the blame-game also!!!
We have athletes to train – in endurance, speed, technique, nutrition, self-confidence, self-motivation, self-esteem, elocution and interview skills – the whole and complete athlete.
So the challenge for the Sports Ministry, Sports Clubs, Corporate citizens and ALL OF US DOMINICANS is to now start their encouragement, their training and nurturing, their nutrition, health and well being.
We must all resolve that heading to the Olympics in 2016 we Chant:
Today DOMINICA BEGINS A NEW LIFE – WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE!! DOMINICA ALL THE WAY TO RIO !!
congrats Thea, and coach Godwin
Congrats Young Lady!

Even with none or little support from the Gov’t and nothing set in place for athletes in Dominica, You have shown us that you overcome these barriers and did your best.
Keep the fire burning.
Way to go Thea. You will get the gold next time.
Congrats! You make Dominica proud.
Sad for Chelsey’s performance due to injury. I know she wanted to attain those 5000 points. Do not give up my dear…continue to strive for your other goals.
