Fazeer Mohammed stands by comments

Mohammed Fazeer
Mohammed Fazeer

Prominent Caribbean cricket commentator, Fazeer Mohammed, is standing by comments in made in a controversial article published in a Trinidadian newspapers where he referred to Dominican spin sensation, Shane Shillingford, as “a pelter.”

In the article, he ridiculed the omission of Sunil Narine on the West Indies team. “When jokers like Shane Shillingford and Veerasammy Permaul” he wrote, “go be in Barbados getting ready for the first Test against Zimbabwe….”

Questioned by reporters on the matter at the end of the second West Indies/Zimbabwe Test at the Windsor Park on Friday, he labeled his comments as “satirical” and said he was standing by what he wrote.

“I have heard a lot of opinion and comments about the piece that I wrote, but it’s a satirical piece but people are entitled to their opinion … I leave it for the public to judge and I don’t think that there is anything to apologize for as a satirical piece,” the outspoken Mohammed said.

In literature satire uses wit as a weapon to ridicule or expose vice and shortcomings with the intent of shaming individuals and society into improvement.   Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism.

Mohammed had high praise for Shillingford who was named Man of the Match for the second consecutive time and Man of the Series for grabbing a record 19 wickets in the two-Test series.

“Shane Shillingford’s  19 wickets in two Test matches has eclipsed the record of Courtney Walsh’s 16 in 1995, he has bowled well and you have to give him credit along with Otis Gibson, Sammy and all those associated with the team for such a splendid performance,” he said.

In the just concluded second Test Shillingford bagged 10 wickets and helped secure a major victory for the Windies. The team has experimented with five specialist batsmen during the series and the renowned Caribbean journalist and sports writer says it is one which needs revisiting as the Caribbean side gears up to face “tougher opposition.”

“He (Shillingford) has collected 10 wickets in a match in Dominica twice, last year and this year it tells you that the West Indies are improving but they need to face tougher opposition … they have to test themselves against tougher opposition,” the commentator stated in cautioning against complacency.

The West Indies team led by Darren Sammy defeated the lowly placed Zimbabwe team inside three days at the Windsor Park to win the two-Test series 2-nil.

Fazeer must have been having too much Calallo and Mauby for lunch in Elsikoro. First time he has eaten agouti, and manicou, and mountain chicken, and some soursop juice in his entire life, the man is beside himself. Fazeer just does not get it. Dem trini spinners can only spin at the Oval and nowhere else. Inshan Ali, Imtiaz Ali, Rangie Nannan, and Rafick Jumadeen – they only decimated opposing teams only at the Oval, except when Irvine Shillingford held them all at bay at the Oval in the seventies and scored 111 runs, assisted by Alfred Corriette of Montserrat where he scored 113 not out. Fazeer just does not get it. It was umpire Lalla of Trinidad who destroyed Kaleb Laurent’s bid for Test selection when he called Laurent for throwing three times at the Oval. Fazeer needs to spend more time in FAISABAD before coming to Dominica.

Its ppl with the mentality of Mr. Mohammed that are the root causes of the great demise of the Windies team. for them it would seem that the larger Islands are the ones with the rights and privileges to the team and as such they have denied talent from the smaller islands the opportunity to shine and make a name, as well as lead the potential successes of the west indies.

Thank you Mr. Mohammed for starving the west indies (our team) of true talent just because u feel superior to us in the smaller islands. Shane has however proved his salt and i do hope that his performance can keep your satirical mouth shut.

dominicans we love to dwell on petty issues too much. Shane had proven himself to be one of the the better test spinners in the west indies before he was dropped. Narine performances at the the test level further confirmed that fact. Now with shanes incredible performaces over the past two test matches, simply cements him at the top.

I find it hard to reconcile satire with the political reference to ATM card in his article (And now that godfather Chavez gone, watch how all them prime minister go be asking Kamla to switch back on the Trinidad ATM and how they go give we all the work when the next hurricane clean them up). I think that reference (on such a sensitive matter) by itself betrays the ‘big island’ mentality that has impeded our progress over the years. his comments may have had limited satirical impact in a barroom among a few bar buddies but for a well known regional/international commentator to publish such stuff without thinking of the larger picture and still not being able to see a reason to apologize means he is either stupid or bigoted. and I do not think he is stupid.

There’s no place for that in our game and region. In this day and age, remember we passed that stage. Ask the greatest calypsonian of all time. Oh, I almost forgot he is a damn Grenadian!

Fazeer Mohammed you are jealous that Shane was chosen over Sunil Narine. This is why you made those comments. You are an Indian. Do not hide behind your discriminatory statement and stated that it was satire. So much for you and your statement. It seems that is all you know, sports, and nothing else. How many people would believe you? You were downright envious and discriminatory. You need to wash your brains and mouth and with Holy Water if you know about that, that they may be purified and make you a humble person.
For someone in your position, your words were unbecoming towards another fellow person. I do not think much of you. In fact, only low-down people who lack class, dignity and consideration would make such a statement. You have shown who and what you are, also a bad-mouthed person.
In future, watch your words. Do not insult our fellowman Shane or any other. He showed you what he was capable of doing and will do in the future. In the meantime, keep your mouth shut and do not worry about if the other Test Matches will be difficult. How much of an expert are you anyway? You cannot see the future. Shane will handle them as he projected.
You cannot deceive us. We know what you stated was not a joke. They were insults. Shane will not answer to you but some of us Dominicans who are bold enough, not whimps, feel obligated to do so for you insulted all of us Dominicans.
Proud as you are, you refused to apologize. We also know why. Consider: “He (God) shall put down the mighty from their seat and exulteth the humble…”
At the moment you must be eating your heart out to see how Shane excelled on the field. We are happy that he did. He worked hard and deserved it. Thank God!
How I wish that you would see these comments. I should get a few signatures, protesting your words to Shane and send it to you and the T & T PM.
Taking it higher up, we should also complain to the T & T PM about you and emphatically request that you apologize to Shane. I do think you have also made Trinidadians feel ashamed.
I would also like to mention that some of us Dominicans have relatives and also friends who are residing in T & T. The more you should be careful of your words towards our fellowman. I am certain that if they heard and read your comments they would not be pleased with you.
Fazeer, your deserve chastisement. In future, count more than once and also your words prior to insulting another. In other words, “Be sure brain is engaged before putting mouth in gear.” Keep this in yur warped mind. Take it, smoke it in your pipe and swallow it.

  29. As I see it
    March 24, 2013

If I were a Trini I would probably have felt like Fazeer Mohammed because we all prefer to see our home boy on the Windies team than someone else. To be honest with you, I like both Shane and Narine, and I would have been ok with the anyone selected. I find it was very harsh when Shane was dropped for Narine last year especially one match after his 10 wkt haul. Narine came in and had a very good home series against the Kiwies but looked very ordinary in Bangladesh.
When you compare their test record, both players are very good at home and below average away. Shane in his 10 test matches has taken 48 wkts, whereas Narine has taken 15 wkts in 5 matches. At home Shane has played 7 games and has taken 42 wkts at an ave. of 25.86. Away he has played 3 games and has taken 6 wkts at an ave. of 68.83. At home Narine has played 2 tests and taken 12 wkts at ave. of 25.66, but on the road he has a very bad average. Away from home he has played 3 matches, took 3 wkts. at an ave. of 137.66. Frazeer needs to look at the stats and see which one is better.
As a West Indian, I feel very offended to hear Frazeer Mohammed refer to Shane as “a pelter”. In cricket a pelter is one who does not turn his arm and may be called for noball by the umpire. We know Shane had that problem and had to adjust his bowling action. The ICC approved his action and therefore Frazeer is out of place to call him a pelter. Frazeer is not an umpire and even if he prefers Narine, he should not call Shane pelter. I believe the Windward Island cricket Board should take that to the WICBC and see to it that Frazeer is banned from doing commentary because by calling Shane a Pelter after he has been cleared by the ICC is in effect saying ICC, which is the cricket governing body of the world, cannot do their job. Frazeer Mohammed has crossed the line and though I believe in freedom of speech, we have to be careful with how we use this freedom.

  41. Satire
    March 24, 2013

Well, one thing is clear now that Mr. Mohammed has decided to explain what his satirical piece was supposed to do, “In literature satire uses wit as a weapon to ridicule or expose vice and shortcomings with the intent of shaming individuals and society into improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism.” Sometimes, I believe reporters need to really dig in with follow up questions like, “What provoked your satirical piece to include Shane bowling action?” Further questioning like, “What do you make of lowly Bangladesh stats for Narine of 300+ runs for 3 wickets?” We really allowed this gentleman to get off easy. I am a former youth and national cricketer, and of late I am not impressed with some of the language coming from commentators, like, “the discarded West Indies fast bowler Nelon Pascale” which a commentator referred to the young man in the current match WWI vs. Barbados. There are more uplifting words that can be used to describe a player, “Their descriptions are too colorful particularly when you look at the individuals who repeat them, some of whom have never gotten to the level of these players. In short, I am not happy with the cannibalization of our sports men and women; believe me it is really easier to play on the outside with one’s mouth than the actual ball and bat. Moving forward, I trust we can bring our players up, and yes we can criticize them but in a manner that does not pull them down, else the song, “We are the West Indies” does not serve as a unifying song which I think the writer meant it to be. Thanks DNO for posting.

For God’s sake the games had not yet commenced and were not underway when this lowly man, Fazeer made such a comment about Shane. You call this a satire, a joke? Could you not see through his comments? It all depends on the type of mentality you have. Some people take matters seriously; others lightly. This one should not be taken lightly.
I do not think Dominican sports-broadcasters would have made such a derogatory statement if a Dominican was not chosen. They would have expressed their disappointment but not what this man, Fazeer stated. Fazeer who is full of pride will not apologize. He does not deserve the position he has.

It is hypocritical of Dominicans to scream for democracy blah, blah, blah, yet, they are quick to shut up someone when that person exercises his or her right to speak. ALL of us are entitled to the freedoms associated with democracy. We will not always like what we hear, but such is the fact of life. We cannot all share the same views. Let freedom reign as long as it does not injure.

The saying: “Words are like atom bombs. Be careful how you use them.” What we do not want for ourselves, we should not do to others.
There are some people as you who will insinuate/state, “What is wrong with that? I do not see anything wrong in that.” It all depends on their mentality. People hurt the feelings of others and because it is not them, this is their casual attitude and downplaying what was stated. Everyone is not one and the same and it has nothing to do with being sensitive as a few like you will be quick to state. Caste that aside and review the words of Fazeer Mohammed. The man is rude and out of place.
I do not take such comments and language lightly. There is some meaning to Fazeer Mohammed’s words which are not complimentary.
You stated, let freedom reign as long as it does not injure. Sarcastic comments and criticisms do injure. They hurt the feelings even though some people may not show it. If it were directed at you or someone close to you I wonder what would you say?
I recall reading a Dear Abby column which is an old one pertaining to her response: “Jokes made at the expense of others are not worth the hurt that is inflicted.” I usually clip out such copies and cannot help but memorize them. They do come in handy for future reference as also this one.
Granted, Fazeer’s comments may not hurt Shane (we do not know) in the sense that it did not affect his abilities on the field. Consider as a human being, it probably did hurt him.
Dominicans have a right to inform Fazeer Mohammed in no uncertain way about his derogatory words. I have stated in another article, only in Trinidad or the West Indies he could make such comments and get away with them.
If he had made such comments in especially Canada or the U.S., he would have to eat his words in humiliation and apologize. Even then, he could have been fired from his position. I can cite a few occasions when certain men of all were asked to resign or fired immediately due to their derogatory/ discriminatory words directed towards others, be it that those who they offended are people of color or not. Fazeer would get so much pressure from the general public, of all nationalities and color that he would have to apologize and he could still have been fired.
Let Fazeer remain where he is. He will die one day (who knows, sooner than he expects) and will experience the effect of what his demeaning words did to others and to him for all eternity, even while he is on earth. Little do some people on their high horse not know what is in store for them. Pride comes before the fall. God has taken note. This should always be our consolation. Patience!

I hope Shane’s performance has finally opened the shameless eyes of the selectors who should begin to restore the pride of West Indies Cricket and select a real West Indies team to represent us. I am so tired with the recycle-able crap they have given to us.

I think the real problem is the Dominican media does not advocate on behalf of Dominicans. So Shane was left to fend on his own. I’m not one who usually agree with your comments, but I must confess that this is one of the few moments I fully concur with you. The key words are “Satirical & Freedom of Speech.”

Shane has proven his case and we must continue to support and wish him well for continued success.

That’s the first time you ever said something I agree with. It’s funny because the commentors on DNO right now acting exactly how Frazeer wrote his piece. Hypocrites

That idiot is just jealous of Shane’s success; he is one of those who yearns for the days when Trinidad were a dominant force in West Indies cricket; gone are the days when they had three spinners from Trinidad in a single game!

Their performances were so poor, that every game they were picked to participate into, the West Indies lost!

Meanwhile people like Caleb Laurent were over looked; simply because he was born in Dominica, where we are regarded as a small island to this day!

When the spin twins as they called two of the Indians who had same last name, however not related to each other failed, the West Indies selectors were forced to select Willet, of St. Kitts, who contributed more to the game than the two waste of time “spin twins.”

We remember when Willet was brought into the team they were reluctant to give the ball to him; the first time he was introduced to the world in his first test; it was under the captaincy of Roan Kanji of Guyana. ( I am not sure if I spelt his name correctly); however, when Roan decided to implement Willet, he handed him an old beat-up ball; saying: “hear son they say you can bowl.”

However, with a ball that had no life left in it, Willet could hardly get any bounce from the ball, by the end of the day he broke through the wicket, which seems impossible all day ending with two valuable wickets by the close of play!

I suppose the details are in the history books, and can be verified.

So, one should not be surprised that this Indian has taken such a stupid position, which is caused by mere jealousy.

He is pretending that he is not ashamed. He should hang his head in shame. I hope in future he thinks before he makes such comments. I reiterate that he is downright insulting. Are you aware that the majority of Indians are prejudice? Are you aware of the problems which exist among Indians and blacks in T & T? It may be quiet now.
I know a few T & T family, Indians who are my friends for years. I cannot say that they are ever prejudice towards me. On the contrary they are like family. I love them as my family. I also know other T & T Indians and we get along well.
However, know that there are many others, no exception, who reside in T & T who are prejudice and who discriminate. Do not put your hand in fire for Fazeer. Those with open and enlightened mind know that this man was downright discriminating.
Some of them call us Dominicans and our island, small island. I have heard it, “You from small island?” I give them a lecture and inform them that Dominica is the third largest in the West Indian islands. Some of them do not know it because they may not have completed elementary school, if they ever attended and others did not receive this education in high school. Keep your mind opened about that.
Fazeer’s attitude is that someone from a small island, a black person would never excel as Sunil and was not worthy of being chosen over sunil. This is what his satire meant, hiding his prejudice under the pretext of it.
Both he and Sunil are disappointed that Shane was chosen. They were hoping that Shane would not shine as he did and are disappointed of his excellent feat. As T & T people would say, “Let him (Fazeer) grind.”

We will see about that. I am a West Indies supporter but the truth is Zimbabwe is a weak team so West Indies had their work cut out for them. WI ranks 7 in ODIs and Zimbabwe ranks 10. WI ranks 7 in test cricket and there is no ranking for Zimbabwe. So, let’s get real. It was a weak team beating a weaker team. On another note, Shane is yet to prove himself on grounds outside of the Caribbean. She what happened when he went to England. He hasn’t proven himself on grounds like Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, unlike Narine. He still has a long way to go but he has made a good start.
