Female basketball team selected for Antigua tourney

Delize Paul, captain of the Dominican team

The Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) is sending a female basketball team to the Gillian Brazier Basketball Tournament in Antigua from November 24-29.

Antigua, St Lucia, Guyana, St. Vincent and USA are also expected to participate, DABA said in a press release.

“Notwithstanding the fact after all attempts by the DABA to organize a women’s basketball league fail to materialize, the association feels it’s an opportunity for the young women to see the level of basketball in the region and hopefully that will encourage them to be more interested and form teams to participate in a local league,” DABA said.

The association praised Delize Paul, who received a basketball scholarship, for putting a team together and raising funds to offset travel and accommodation expenses for the team.

“Recognizing the fact that DABA did not have the funds to send the team to the tournament, however the DABA, after some miscommunication, agreed to let Ms. Paul use the good name of DABA to seek sponsorship from the Government and other sources. After much hard work by members of the team and coaches, the team was able to raise the funds to attend the tournament. The attending country team was responsible for their travel and accommodation expenses,” DABA stated.

Coach Garth Joseph

The team comprises:

Delize Paul (captain)
Curnia John
Sawana Fabien
Bridgetta Bedminister
Adel Francis
Lynah Bontiff
Julia Bruno
Metha Williams
Gale Joseph
Tiffany Graham
Merle John
Julianna Fagan
Garth Joseph (coach)
Bernard Mills (assistant coach)

Rosemary is my role model. She inspires me to achieve better things, I do follow her words. She has studied my weaknesses and strength and improve on them. When she gets a chance to talk to me she always offer some sound basketball words of encouragement. Yes I can say thanks to her.

Hey men Rosemary is the best she still got game. I saw he playing the other day and men she still got game. No need to hate her now and yes she would be a good COACH after all I know if she had gone many would be happy. So about her poor attitude frankly she has a great attitude. I love the fact that she minds her own business and sets the record straight. Again she is real. She is just the best we have. And yes you should have all respect to her regardless how long she has played. Thats the thing with us Dominican we dont respect and appreciate our own people. When she was playing we are all happy and now she is not we are all sad and have all kinds of things to say. I have always wish the team best of luck and knew that they couldnt have done it without her. Thanks

I sense your jealous of her, I was at the practices and thanks to Rosemary even when i didnt want to come she encourage me. She would also help out her other team mates so I can see that you are very dangerous for making such accussation about our best. Thats sad.

Again I was happy that she encouraged me, am just sad that we cannot play basketball but still we try lets face the fact

Well my fellow Dominicans, despite of who is or isn’t on this DOMINICA NATIONAL TEAM, we should give these young women our support. They may not capture the 1st place , but I know that as Dominica massive they will do us proud, overall. With vets like Bridgetta, and Sunshine, They will accomplish …. HATS OFF to all those involved in making this a reality

@ HA HA None of the women basketball players in Dominica are as good as they think they are. Sawana has raw talent & potential but still needs a lot of work. Rosemary may have been good at one time but her ability has gone downhill. Her lack of practice & poor attitude kept her from going to Antigua for this tournament. The problem is the same as it is with other sports here in Dominica, not many people want to practice & train. Most want to show up a week or two before a tournament.

Where is Rosemary? Oh men we really can’t win a tournament without this lady, she is awesome, with grace and game.

I do hope the Dominica team realizes that Rosemary was the only player who got Four Trophies(MVP, most rebound, most assist, and second in scoring in 2006 to help the Dominica Women National Basketball Team in Antigua. I was so sad when I heard she couldn’t have made it due to other priorities. Best of luck Rosemary

I do agree 100% with you that Sawana,Rosemary and Lisa are the best players that we have here in Dominica. In fact Rosemary is just like LISA LESLIE, she knows the game, she was the top player in the tournament in 2006 in Antigua. coming back home with four tropies. Its just a shame to have lost her on the team. Still best of luck to this team.

The comparison between Lisa Leslie & Rosemary is ridiculous! Also 4 years is along time when your that age & not practicing regularly. Maybe she can contribute more as a coach now. I’d hate to see her not involved at all.

          December 1, 2010

I dont think you are correct on this one. Rosemary is Tall and skillful and so is Lisa Leslie, they both can play the game. 4 years is a long time but the fact remains that was her accomplishment on the team. Why does she have to practice regularly? Is there any women leagues in Dominica? Do you know of any other women practicing regularly so really I dont see your point. She came to Portsmouth to play with us and I learnt so much from her.She is such a cool lady..

Being tall does not make Rosemary anything like Lisa Leslie. Rosemary doesn’t have a fraction of Leslie’s talent!

@ ha! There was miscommunication & things could of been handled differently by everyone involved. Hopefully, this has been a learning experience for everyone.

In spite of the miscommunication, the important thing is the ladies persevered. They worked hard. They fought hard. They made personal sacrifices. THEY WILL BE COMPETING TONIGHT!

We are thankful & appreciative of everyone who did help & support the team, be it financial assistance, socks & travel shirts, letting us borrow warmup shirts & basketballs, to the establishments/institutions who excused the team from work/school so they could represent Dominica.

GOOD LUCK LADIES! GOOD LUCK COACH MILLS! GOOD LUCK COACH JOSEPH♥!

SPIN! SPIN! SPIN! Don’t worry, many of us know the truth! We know the DABA actually sent out letters & made calls to block your sponsorship. (Their idea of miscommunication) We know how you were told you were approved for funding & the day before you were supposed to leave you were told, sorry no funds are available! We know how you scrambled, fought & stayed in Dominica an extra day to make your participation possible. We know how some of you took personal loans that last day! If it was not for your own hard work, the work of your coaches & Mrs. Joseph you wouldn’t be participating.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL YOU LADIES, ESPECIALLY MY GB GIRLS! WE’RE PROUD OF YOU!
