Final of 2011 District Sports Festival carded for November 20

The Sports Division in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports will on Sunday, November 20, 2011 stage the Final of the 2011 District Sports Festivals at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth.

The inaugural festival was held in 2010 and was won by Lagoon.

This year’s final is expected to bring together the eight (8) winners from the District Festivals which were held between May and September 2011.

Each of the eight (8) districts will be represented by the village which emerged as the Champion village from the various district competitions.

The grand final, which is expected to commence at 1:00 pm, will see competition in football, cricket, netball, volleyball, rounders, basketball and athletics.

The overall winner will earn the rights to be called the “Best Sporting Village” in Dominica and will be awarded at the prestigious National Sports Awards carded for April 2012.

At Sunday’s event, trophies will be presented to the winner of each sporting discipline, as well as for the overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

The villages to participate in Sunday’s Sports festival are:

•    North – Lagoon
•    North East – Wood Ford Hill
•    East – Crayfish River/Salybia
•    South East – Cass O’ Gorie
•    South West – Pointe Michel
•    South – Tete Morne
•    Central – Goodwill
•    West – St. Joseph

In 2010, the Sports Division instituted the District Sports Festival as a strategy to rejuvenate sports at the community level while bringing persons together for recreation and socialization.

It was hoped that coming out of the District Sports Festivals, communities would organize themselves into structured sporting bodies which would lead to the establishment of village sports committees and then this would ultimately lead to the formation of Districts Sports Committees.

The Division extends an invitation to the general public to be part of Sunday’s activities and to be present to witness the crowning of the Best Sporting Village in Dominica for 2011.
