Hard work of sportsmen to be recognized

Sports Minister Justina Charles has confirmed that the Windsor Park Sports Stadium will be named after local prominent sportsmen and possibly women.

The over $40 million Chinese-funded facility was the topic of much controversy recently, when sports advocates called for the naming of various stands ahead of the two One-Day International games carded for Dominica in June.

Charles disclosed at a press conference on Wednesday at the Financial Centre that Cabinet will soon take a decision in that regard.

According to her, the names have been indentified and the persons have consented to use their names.

“After the construction of the Stadium, it was named the South, East and West Stand and that was not an issue then. However we have taken a decision to name it after some of our prominent sports people in Dominica. This is one way of recognizing the hard work of some of our sportsmen,” she said.

She said there has been issue regarding generating income, but Government has been looking at ways to raise some money to maintain the facility.

First the name :Windsor Park Sport Staium: should be sold.Second get an estimated annual maintenace cost . Third use that money for maintenance of the stadium. All additional money should be used to construct proper ticket booths and entrance should be properly landscaped. The standard should be of a higher level especially when you want to attract foreigners to the arena. These wooden booths must go and rushing to purchase tickets should stop. The entrance to this multi million $ facility is poor and it should be made more attractive_

I soooo agree with you especially the landscaping part.that is a problem in DA just watch the financial centre.

They build, with no parking,no landscaping, for an island with an abundance of natural resources ,the city should be green and clean.

Please Mrs. Charles, the media center at the stadium should be named “The Jeff Charles and Reginald St. Havis Shillingford New Media Center”. Anything for VIATE? He was there every Sunday after church with his bible walking around encouraging Irvine and Clem John to bat it out,
and they responded graciously.. The Southern bowling end , the Grayson Shillingford End, the Northern bowling end, the Norbert Philip End. Don’t forget the left handed man David Defoe who was able to drift the ball through slips under overcast skies only for the Sharpes to take a brilliant catch at slips. The man Cecil Larocque, the sweet timer of the ball, ala Alvin Kallicharan. Let’s stop all that umpiring bickering and name it “The Wayne Philip Players’ Pavilion” a jack in the pot, as nimble as a thimble, and as quick as plastic man, a West Indies potential, but vanished into the wilderness. So sad the story of a young, budding wicketkeeper, ala Alan Knott.

Good point Anonymous – sometimes we get so caught up emotionally that we forget the revenue generating aspect.

The name of the stadium should be sold to a Co, for at least 3 years and probably called Digicel Stadium,Astaphan,Henken etc. This will generate much needed monies to be used as maintenance.Remember that the Windsor Park was always a sports Park so consider the football players as well.
