IOC to intervene in DOC dispute

Dominica Olympic CommitteeThe International Olympic Organization (IOC) says it considering sending a representative to Dominica to review a dispute between the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) and several of its affiliate members, Dominica News Online has been reliably informed.

Sources close to the matter told DNO that an IOC representative is expected on the island in July, although no specific date has been set.

The source noted that the IOC has requested that no actions be taken by either side in the dispute until its representative visits Dominica.

The IOC is hoping that the matter is “resolved peacefully and amicably in the interest of the Olympic movement in Dominica,” according to the source.

The DOC and some of its affiliate members have been at loggerheads since January 24, 2013 when a meeting was held to elect officers to the DOC executive.

The members complained there were irregularities during the elections.

They subsequently wrote to the DOC general secretary instructing that a special meeting be convened “under the powers of Article 18.1 of the Bye-Laws of the Dominica Olympic Committee.”

The members say they were concerned about ‘many issues’ which they said must be addressed when the meeting was held.

The special meeting was held at the Fort Young Hotel on May 16 but, after, according to member organizations, it was  going “nowhere,” a resolution was passed giving the DOC executive 21 days to hold an Annual General Meeting in order that fresh elections be held.

However the DOC decided to refer the matter to the IOC “as it is authorized by Virtue of the Olympic Charter.” It also questioned whether elections were actually needed as demanded by the affiliate members.

The matter took another turn when the affiliate members wrote to the IOC, asking for its intervention.

In their lettter, they said they were “aggrieved” at the manner in which the DOC is being governed by its president, Felix Wilson and general secretary, Thomas B. Dorsette.

The visit to Dominica by the IOC representative is in response to the letter from the affiliate members.

I have been following this matter very closely and the behavior of the Executive is shameful. It is obvious that Wilson and Dorsett are doing their best to remain in office against the wishes of the large majority of members. The other members of the Executive if they are men of substance should turn their backs on those two and get new elections called. How can the DOC receive a letter from the IOC and hide it from their members? That alone sends out a red alert and I hope the IOC team that comes to DA would be objective and impartial enough to let those two know that enough is enough

Definitely need some fresh perspective in the DOC. Wilson, Dorsette, Harris, Loblack, and all the other need to be out of this thing for the good. The IOC should come in and appoint the past executive till the elections can be held.

This embarrassing but at the same time the right decision since obviouly we can not resolve this locally. it seems that the current executive of the DOC is saying to their adversaries:” well, if we can not have it, so can none of you”. That would be childish and under the circumstances it is best that we start with a clean slate so we can present ourselves at the next Games without any old baggage or the proverbial skeletons in closets.

Wherever there is money and a semblance of power, we always raise our ugly head. The DFA is the other local sporting organization where money and power has created more than a stir. See to what length PJ went to maintain his position. It would seem then that no local effort could have stopped him. It took the intervention of FIFA to effectively take care of him. Similarly, see to what lengths Felix is prepared to go simply to entrench himslef in his position. It cannotbe simply for the love of the Olympic Spirit. I suspect and smell filthy lucre and some power to determine who goes where, when and how as the real motivating factors here.

I wonder if it was Skerrit, if the “TRUTH TO POWER’ radio serial would not have investigated the real truth to the issue at hand.

Notice that the other sporting organizations are not so mired in perpetual controversy. For the love of Sport we say. I think it is more for the love of the travel many opportunities.

I agree fully with your comment except this cheap shot comment of THE TRUTH TO POWER RADIO STATION. I do not see why you had to go there. That was unnecessary.
