Japanese volunteer volleyball coach on two-year assignment in Dominica

Yuya Sumida

Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) Mr. Yuya Sumida has begun a two-year assignment with the Dominica Amateur Volleyball Association as a volleyball coach.

A native of Kobe-shi, Hyogo, Japan, Sumida is the holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree (Language and Culture), and has played volleyball at the Club level in both Japan and Australia, in the libero position. He replaces Mr. Yusoke Uno who completed his assignment here in September 2010.

The services of Sumida have been made available by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), through its representative in Dominica, Mr. Tatsuya Morita.

The volunteer is deployed at the Sports Division, where he will assist with the schools volleyball programme. He is currently assisting David Toussaint in coaching the Secondary Schools Volleyball teams in preparation for the Windward Islands Inter-Schools Tournament, to be hosted by Dominica this year.

In addition, Sumida will be involved in the coaching of the national Youth and Junior Volleyball Teams. His services will also be available to community groups that may be interested in introducing volleyball in their communities, or to improve the skills of players.

Groups interested in taking advantage of the coach’s services should contact the DAVA at 225-0614

Haha.. hehehe.. All you have jokes. Everybody takes a bad picture at one time or another. I know Yuya and he is a very handsome Japanese guy. He is also very talented and I hope he can bring some development in volleyball at the schools’ level.

Thank you Japan for helping our nation. Hope you guys recover soon from those hard times that you have fallen prey to.

This picture could be his passport picture, where you are not supposed to smile.

Lets hope the volleyball community of Dominica make use of his coaching skills and that Dominica wins the Islands Inter School Tournament.

I say ‘Welcome to Dominica Mr Sumida, and enjoy your stay’.
