The village of Laudat, widely known for its scenic beauty, is hosting a Grand Sports Day today.
The event, which is being held at the Laudat Playing Field, has been organized by the Laudat Rounders Team in an effort “to foster community spirit, promote healthy living, improve the level of sports in the community and to raise funds for the team”, according to a release from the organizers.
“This is the first time in years that the community is hosting a sporting event of this magnitude,” the release stated.
The Laudat Football Team, Wotten Waven Rounders and football teams are expected to participate in the fundraising event, along with other individuals and villagers.
In addition to the conventional sports of football, rounders, and dominoes, villagers, adults and children alike, will also be competing in traditional games such as lime and spoon, sack race and bottle balancing, .
Captain of the Rounders Team, Velma Moses said such an event is important to a community as it not only helps to keep residents active and healthy through exercise in the wake of increased chronic non-communicable diseases in the country, but it promotes community spirit and togetherness that could only result in the development of Laudat and the country as a whole.
She also sees it as an avenue to reduce youth idleness and to help stimulate their involvement in sports.
She credited a number of sponsors who have come on board to support the event. These include the Laudat Sports Committee, Laudat Village Improvement Committee, Parliamentary Representative Dr. John Colin McIntyre, Ronald Charles and Associates, Stone Hill Sounds who are providing musical entertainment, MAP Designs, the Sports Division, Rueben’s Bakery and the entire community of Laudat.
Moses also made special mention of the “invaluable donations and contributions towards the staging of the event” made by her team members and the Laudat football team.
The event was expected to begin at 12 pm with a rounders match between Wotten Waven and Laudat. It will end with a prize giving ceremony.
“We promise good family fun. It will be a sports day of a lifetime. No one should miss it,” Moses said.
